Puzzling results changing object lengths

terrypin wrote on 9/1/2016, 4:33 PM

I get unexpected results when I try changing the lengths of a group of objects in MEP 2016 if there are other objects on tracks below. Here's one example, but there are more.

Depending on the positions of the other objects and the durations involved, other weird results arise, such as some or all of the lower objects overlapping (i.e. getting crossfaded). I don't understand why these objects below track 1 should get affected at all, or why they should affect the track 1 objects.

Hi Terry

The gaps are caused by having the objects below the ones you want to change the length and the track mode is set to Automatic.

The track mode needs changing to Single track ripple then that track behaves correctly.

However there would appear to be a bug because I also get the lower track objects also shortening even though not selected and gaps still appear in the upper track.

The work around is to not put any objects on lower tracks eg titles etc until after you change multiple objects lengths - this is my normal workflow so I have not seen this behaviour before.

Muting a track will not stop objects being changed on it - it just hides it.

You need to lock the track, this only locks the position and prevents removal of objects, most effects are unaffected by the lock and you can still add objects to track howver there position is locked immediately.

Hi,

I'm back but busy. Took some time to check this in VPX after downloading the latest patch. Well, that is just annoying; VPX gives the same result.

Try shortening one single image in an area that covers the objects on lower track. Transitions are created on the lower track.

@John EB,

As far as I know, the selection that you show, Single-track ripple, is for import only and does not affect any other editing operations. I think that you meant the Mouse modes. Terry's image shows that he was in Mouse mode for single track; your image shows Mouse mode for single object.

It definitely seems buggy to me. I'll work around it by simply moving stuff on lower tracks away from the field of action.

Also, I'd have hoped that Lock meant 'Locked, no changes can be made'. But maybe there's some logic in the current design that I haven't spotted?

Hi

@ John CB

. . . . I think that you meant the Mouse modes. Terry's image shows that he was in Mouse mode for single track; your image shows Mouse mode for single object. . . . .

I tested all track modes with different mouse modes - track mode set to single track ripple is correct for what is required to happen, irrespective of the mouse mode, which affects what happens when you select an object and then start to drag it,  subject to the 'bug' I identified in my post and the workaround.

As in MEP, locking track 5 gave the same bad result. I think this is a bug. If I change the length of an image on the timeline, I do not want it messing up other tracks. Of course, one can alway drag the end of an object, but then getting a precise length is harder.

I tried changing the length of the objects that were on track 5. No impact on track 1.

Undo. I then moved all track 1 objects to track 2 and tried again with these. No impact on track 5.

So, this is some "feature" that impacts only track 1, unless someone finds otherwise. I would like to know the reasoning behind this feature.

I was using VPX.

@John EB,

I was referring to your screen shot. The popdown that you show (shortcuts 1 through 5) is for importing only. I find no effect from these settings when moving objects around. At least, I cannot find that they affect anything other than imports. Shortcuts 6, 7 and 8 are the ones that affect moving objects on the timeline.
