Puzzling difference

terrypin wrote on 6/23/2012, 10:21 AM

In my image editor I added text to a 1920 x 1080 photo JPG. That section looks like this in any of my image viewers:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4019461/OriginalIrfanView.jpg

There are some JPG artifacts but in the full image they're hardly noticable.

But when imported into MEP (17 or MX) and viewed full screen in the monitor, it looks like this:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4019461/MEPMonitor.jpg

Why such a great deterioration? (The exported MP4 looks just as bad.)

FWIW, I have playback resolution set to Half, but that setting makes no apparent difference whether at Full, half or Quarter (a puzzling side issue).

Hi Terry

At last an issue that I can reproduce perfectly !!!

I think the artefacts you are seeing are because of a high compression ratio for the output of the jpg image.

For video I use no compression if you are still using PSP then it is in the save dialog Options button.

I never use compression unless it is absolutely necessary.

John

PS - I prefer to use png files as you get the transparancy available.

Hi John,

Thanks - good to hear we're singing from the same hymn sheet on this one! (Hmm, as a non-believer I really must try to find a different expression )

However, I still find it hard to see why there should be such a big difference as in that example. And I've just spent an hour trying to reproduce it again methodically and so far failed, which is somewhat of a reversal!

But I certainly accept your principle about minimising compression. As for file type, my digicam original JPGs are 4000 x 3000 so I tend to stay with JPG throughout. And I have quite a few macros that work exclusively on JPGs. And until this text issue I've never really noticed any significant deterioration in the exported MP4 video when played on PC or TV. (And of course when playing a burned DVD.) For transparency effects I do sometimes switch to PNG.

Anyway, I was breaking my normal rule of not embedding text in bitmap form. I've now switched to adding the text in with MEP's Title Editor for consistently good results.

Hi Terry...

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this but I am wondering if it is ok to uninstall Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 now that I have the new MX installed and running...?

Thanks,

bnick

Hi

@ b niccolai

It is considered bad manners to hi-jack a thread with another question which is not in direct response to the original posters question.

You can uninstall the previous version if you need to.

John

Hi Terry

As far as the degraded preview in the MEP monitor goes - you have'nt got the "Reduce bitmap resolution for preview" selected in the Program Setting > Video/audio tab, have you?

Hi Peter,

No, just checked in case I'd experimented in the recent past and forgot to turn it off again.

The curious thing is that I still haven't been able to repeat that very poor display!
