Are you only after recording audio as in a Digital Audio Workstation?

Are you only after recording one or two tracks of audio at a time?

Will it involve effects or using soft instruments?

Do you need to add a MIDI keyboard?

Will latency be an issue for you because getting a low working latency is about using dedicated ASIO drivers and possibly an additional sound card or external interface if using any type of MIDI controller or keyboard.

Will the tracks involve having audio files on them or just be hosting a virtual instrument?

Be aware that using samples that are bought or come with the software may not be royalty or copyright free and need additional payments for their use if uploaded anywhere onto the net. Costs may mount up quickly.

Be aware that like most editing software, it is often desirable to have the files in use within a project not on the main program C: drive but a secondary internal SSD.

If you have no need of video then don't buy a video editing package. If you are editing video with audio you will probably need quite a powerful desktop if you want to run 32 track of audio and edit video. Better to have a dedicated audio editing program to record and mix down on and then a cheaper Video editing package to edit video to the imported mix-down.

If you are trying to get individual video clips of people playing instruments to put into some form of collective effort, especially if you use mobile phone footage I would forget it before you even begin. The processing requirements would be enormous requiring serious processing power. It's not that it can't be done, it's just very, very expensive to do well or easily.

As for Dolby 5.1 encoding. Dolby has really shut down on non professional use over the last few years. Yes there are free downloads out there that end up being trials with limitations and a hefty price tag to buy and may only integrate into equally expensive software.

Even Adobe Premier no longer supports or has a licence for Dolby surround sound any more.

This is for my remote system and it has 32 mic inputs, but I have never used more than 20. I connect it via Thunderbolt and use the interface for a low latency headphone mix. This is only for remote recording, I do all of my mixing at home on my main system. I record bands in their practice place or a local club. If I use any samples, I make my own. I don’t do any video, but I have worked on mixes with over 100 tracks with plugins and haven’t experienced and problems. I bought Vegas Pro, only for the Dolby 5.1 encoder and the surround panner! But, I use my Surcode DVD-DTS encoder more now, because I think it sounds better. All of my surround mixes are for my personal use. I’m slowly converting all my 4-channel Reel-to-Reel tapes to digital, for ease of playback. At 70 years old, this is just my retirement hobby.

Take a look at Samplitude Pro X and on either side, Samplitude Music Studio, Samplitude Pro X Suite. See here for the comparison table.

I don't know about surround sound.

The price of entry is high, so wait for a sale.

With Samplitude Music Studio, you can record up to 16 mono tracks or 8 stereo tracks simultaneously. With Pro X, I have no idea what the limit is, but it's high.

Try them out.

If you want a cheap older full version of Samplitude Music Studio, you have less than 4 hours to get it from Humble Bundle along with some other Magix programs and audio plugins - 36$ Cdn, about 30 USD.

Channel limit makes this Samplitude Pro a non contender! Also, that special deal is offering outdated software that I already own. Thanks for the input though.

i think you are looking at the wrong product specs - Samplitude Pro X functions here state 256 physical inputs with up to 999 tracks.

My system is based around MOTU 1248/24Ai/24Ao, with a couple of Focusrite Platinum Octopre's for mic pre's. Yes, I see that the new Samplitude Pro X has enough inputs. It appears that the link that I looked at was for an outdated version. I just got PreSonus Studio One, If that doesn't work out I will give Samplitude a try.
