ProX will not write to DVD DL discs

rickduley wrote on 8/2/2025, 7:01 PM

I use ProX to write recorded movies to DVD. Writing to ordinary DVDs is fine but for longer movies I need to write to write to Dual Layer Discs. I have tried both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs and all I get is an error dialog saying that the disc cannot be written to.

Here are log files from both attempts.

Would someone please, if possible, tell me what is going wrong?

Thanks

Hi Rick,

My method of creating DL Discs from VPX footage is to NOT attempt the burning in VPX! For me, this has been the case for several versions of the software. The reason for this is that DL Discs require a nominated "split point", where the reading laser knows to return to the beginning of the disc to read the second data layer and VPX seems to not know how or where to create this. (I did download your Error Report files but lack the skill to adequately understand them, sorry! So, what I suggest below may NOT be appropriate for you.)

Rather, for DL Discs I do the following:

  • I choose the Disc Image option and create the files in VPX (there will be a folder in your chosen storage folder for Disc Images), the process also creates an .iso file but this can be discarded.
  • I then use the free ImgBurn to burn the actual disc. Full instructions on how to do this can be found here.
  • One very common problem is that, having started to use ImgBurn, it throws the "end of the world" error, because it can't find a suitable split point!
  • That's when this post becomes absolutely invaluable! (I have both the posts from the ImgBurn Support forums printed out and available for when I need to create a DL disc because the process is NOIT easy!)
  • Having successfully followed the above procedures and created your DL disc you can, if you wish, use another feature of ImgBurn to create a new .iso file using the files now in the source folder.

One final, slightly "off the wall" thought: can your Disc Burner definitely handle DL discs?

@rickduley the error log says that the disc is not empty or not writable.

There is also often this error:

ThumbnailCache::GetThumbnailFromFile: invalid filetype 208 J:\Movie Archive\Attenborough 99\Attenborough 99.MVP

Maybe it has something to do with DVD menu? In the past users had encoding problems if they changed clips or chapter makers after creating the DVD menu. Then it only helped to recreate the DVD menu. But encoding seems to finish fine in your case.

Hi Rick

. . . . Writing to ordinary DVDs is fine but for longer movies I need to write to write to Dual Layer Discs.  . . . .

From the 2 log files, the rendering of the video to DVD format completes steps 1 to 4 of the 5 steps necessary for one movie, so there is no apparent issue with the creation of the DVD files.

The issue at step 5, looks like the DL disks are not being detected to determne the type and burn parameters for both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL and split point, determined before rendering starts if a disc is present/detected by the drive.

What are the make/model numbers of the 2 DVD drives and they support DL disks?

What brand and type number are the DL discs?
