Project can not burn to disc

Swifty wrote on 9/21/2021, 11:40 AM

I am using Photo Story 2022 that I just downloaded on a windows 10 based Dell w/ i7 8700 cpu. 16 GB. After creating a new project I am unable to burn to disc.

I closed the program, and then restarted only to receive a message stating that "another user is using the program". This however is not the case. I then loaded an existing project (created using Photo Story 2020) and try to burn it to disc to no avail. The error log shows that it can not find my files eg: jpgs & mts.

@Swifty

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

Can you quote the full wording of the error message or, perhaps better still, a screenshot of it?

With the project originally created in PS 2020, are ALL the constituent image and video files in exactly the same location(s) on your hard drive(s) as they were when you first created (? and exported?) the project? The fact that the error message says the program cannot "find" your files would suggest they have been moved or even deleted since the project was first finished.

For the "new" project you are trying to burn, can you also show a screenshot of the Export screen, so we can be clear exactly which export settings you have selected?

@Swifty

And the wording of the error message?

One thing strikes me about the settings screen you show, namely, the bit rate is rather higher than I would expect to see. Are you burning an AVCHD project to DVD? If so, how long (playing time) is it? AVCHD DVD is limited, especially at that bit rate, to an absolute maximum of less than 30 minutes. (Having just checked this on my system I see the default is 16384, rather than your 17384. That extra 1000 will definitely reduce the available length of your project which can be burned to DVD.)

Before we go any further, the error code (above) that I receive every time I start up the program should be considered first. I have rebooted my computer several times and this error will still occur.

@Swifty

I’ll freely admit I’ve never seen that error message after a computer reboot (just checking you did use the Restart option and not the option to Shut down and then manually restart? There is a distinct operational difference in terms of what the OS actually does when these commands are issued).

If you open Task Manager before opening PS is there an instance of it listed there? If so, have you tried right-clicking on the listing for it and choosing End Task? Does that prevent the error message when you next try to open the app? If not, have you tried restarting the computer immediately after the End Task command has been used?

All the above is entirely speculation on my part because, as I said, I’ve never seen that message after a computer restart.

Sorry for the confusion, I did a "hard" boot by powering down completely. I tried checking the task manager before opening PS, but there was no other application running. These erratic error message is leading me to think that I had a corrupt software download to begin with. I thought about deleting the program from my computer and then try to download the file again. What do you advise?

@Swifty

NEVER simply "delete" any program from your computer, it must be uninstalled!

However, did you also carry out the Restart process, (right-click Windows icon - bottom left of home screen - choose Shut down or sign out>Restart)? As I explained before this is different to simply shutting down (your "Hard Boot"). The latter "saves" whatever is the current configuration of Windows so that when you restart your computer (theoretically) it is exactly as it was when you shut down; the Restart option forces Windows to do some housekeeping and check that, e.g., any partially installed updates are actually fully installed and that any programs "still running" are properly closed and then restart as a "vanilla" configuration.

If you eventually decide to uninstall and then reinstall we always advise using a dedicated uninstall app (my personal choice is Revo Uninstaller, there are both free and Pro (paid-for) versions) because it will run the app's own uninstaller (in your case the uninstaller for PS) and then do a search for anything left on your computer which might be connected with the uninstalled app but which is not removed by its own uninstaller because it does not know these files/folders/registry entries exist because they are created only on first or subsequent runs of the app, not during the initial install. Often it is those files/folders/registry entries which can be the cause of the initial problem with the app; leaving them in place can mean the problem is still there!

If you do use Revo and allow it to scan for any leftovers do make sure you check carefully everything it tells you it thinks should be removed, especially if you have any other Magix program(s) installed.

Once the uninstall is completely finished, restart (as above) your computer again and then reinstall the app.
