Hi.

We need more information to help diagnose the issue(s) you are having:and recommend the correct setting for the program.

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s)you are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are you getting any error messages, if so then please quote them in full or provide screen shots.

Are the graphics card drivers up to date?

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options or Display options tab would help.

What video format, codec and resolution is the clip(s) that are causing the issue? To help with this, download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

@Tina-Baker

Hi Tina.

Are you still using Movie Studio 2022?

What version of Windows are you using. What build is Windows on?

Does your computer / laptop have a separate graphics card or inboard GPU in your CPU? What are your machine specs? Processor make and model number, graphics card if fitted? amount of motherboard memory? Have you recently checked for graphics driver updates after any Windows updates?

Are these video files you have used in the past and worked before, or new ones?

If new files, did they come from a different source than before, such as a new phone?

When asking questions on the forum in future, please think about the question and any additional information you may need to give to help us give a sensible answer. You may then get a quicker solution to your problem.

At present from what you have written above, all we know is you may or may not have a current version of a program that could be a program that is relevant to this forum and is misbehaving on whatever machine you are running it on, using possible source files or an operating system that may not be compatible with the program.

That information could be put in your forum members' profile under the 'My Signature' section and kept up-to-date. Then, at a glance, we could see that by clicking on the blue +SIGNATURE button that would appear underneath each comment you make on the forum. That would save both you and us a lot of time when you come back with questions in the future and speed up the response of members wishing to help you out.

Hi Ray and thank-you for your response, I started to think it may have been my end so I then went on to update all drivers, refreshed everything, and as it happens the videos do seem to be working and the program is working without crashing or shutting down, I do have the latest version well bought back in February? I think 2022 and update when it tells me there is one that needs it but your information has been helpful and I will take your advice on board in the future Thanks

Hi Tina.

MS 2022 has finished with updates. There should be no more patches and is relatively stable. (it's the version I'm still on). If on the other hand you decide to upgrade and spend out on the 2023 version make sure your computer components can take advantage of the new build version. You only need to keep both Windows and any graphics drivers your system needs up to date to keep things stable. As I don't know your computer components I can't recommend which program to install to remind you automatically when a new driver is available as Windows update does not do that.

I am glad you have everything back working though and thank you for the feedback.

Ray.

Hi Tina.

The version of the program will come up in the start up screen. 2022, 2023, etc.

Try opening the Windows Task Manager while the program is running and see if any component spikes quite high when there is a problem in the program. If you see any data being transferred while a project is being loaded into the program, don't try to do anything in the program until that data movement has ceased.

Ideally you should be using three different physical drives (no files stored from internet cloud storage as transfer speeds are far too slow) to run the program smoothly.

One drive for the operating system and program, with enough free drive space for the program to generate and use what can be quite large temp files.

One drive for your project files.

One to drive export and render your video files to, although at a pinch a fast drive with a large memory cache (256MB) may suffice. If external it should connected either via USB-3, Firewire, or USB-C.

While I understand this can be difficult or impossible for some laptop / tablet, the additional strain of having everything on one drive can cause problems unless your system has some form of fast Solid State C: drive.

At no point use files residing in the cloud for use in a project, such as if using One Drive or Google drive.

Ray.

Ray, while I see the logic in having separate drives for Windows and data files, I think you're exaggerating the issues with exports, saying a third drive is "ideal". Exporting is the slowest thing we do and I'm sure any modern drive can cope with exporting while holding all project the video files.

I wouldn't want somebody would try to set up their video computer with a third drive simply to export to. It's just not necessary.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al.

Just yesterday, (last night) while exporting a project of 47 minutes of 4k footage filmed at 24 fps and the camera files run at a constant 100Mb/s. There are just a few effects interspersed for short periods (often less than 15 seconds) consisting of only size position (thrice) use of sharpening along with use of the brightness contrast (once and separate instance) and only cross fades, single track of video and two sets of audio, approximately two thirds of the way in the 4TB disc drive containing the project, and that I was also rendering to, started to max out the read speed of the drive at 154MB/s. (WD RED drive) The write speed could not keep up despite the drives 256MB cache and the whole project froze with the nvidia GPU also going into overdrive shortly after. The disk drive was reporting the same activity throughout the period of freezing along with the nvidia GPU. I waited for over ten minutes to see if was clear. It could have been as long as fifteen minutes. Eventually I decided to end the program via task manager. Trying to open the project again using the project file I got the following information box. 'Your hard drive is either write protected or full. Cannot open project'. The drive is less than half full and definitely not write protected. I eventually found the last non corrupted BAK file to restore the project and do the last few adjustments it had missed after the BAK file was created.

After that I rendered the file to another faster drive (SSD) and had no problems with either drive never getting above transfer speeds of over 64MB/s. Why the difference, I have no idea but that has not been the only time I have had similar problems.

So I can't say definitely you are wrong but my own experience is definitely different to your own and probably heavily depends on the files in use in the project. Some of which in mine were around 3.7GB each, straight from camera. I only ever record to H264 for 4k.

Ray.

Hi

On the issue of number of drives, there is no hard and fast rule on how many you should have however:

A third drive though 'nice to have' is not essential - it does give the benefit of backing up projects regularly in case of an issue.

A second drive for PC's and laptops that have a single small (SSD) drive is a must have, unless free space, files and project management are carefully managed to maintain at least 15 - 20% free space.

I get away with a single 512GB SSD drive in my laptop because it is my 'mobile' editing device used when I am away. It has only the current project loaded on to it, other projects awaiting editing and extra resources are on 2 external USB drives. I use SyncBack to move/sync projects to/from the laptop/external drives as required both for maintaining a tidy SSD drive and backups.

Hello everyone and thank-you for your reply's, CubeAce ...., I have been in this situation with many fades, effects and others before in older versions and was able to work out the issue ..... but with this version now Movie studio 22 it just shuts down before I have even have a project opened ... I have opened a new project scroll down video files to see which to use go to preview it and bye its gone , but I think this is recent because I was able to view videos before, I have tried to get advice from somebody who knows computers but has no knowledge of this program suggested I either reinstall this program or not sure what he meant something like a a full clean up ... I am good with using the program and other ones very savvy but not with the hardware side of things if someone can shed some light on what this talk means ..... this might help ..... and sorry once upon a time I understood computer talk now I just need a direction on the best way to get this program up and running again properly as I will really need it very soon and thanks in advance

Please read this post and give all or as much of the requested details as you can! If you add it to your Signature (on your profile page) it will automatically appear at the foot of every post you make and save us having to ask for it each time!

Also, please look back to one of @johnebaker's earlier posts where he mentions using MediaInfo. The data from that would also be very useful!

no not new ones, they are short less then 5 minutes mp4 or AVI some I have downloaded and converted some I have had for years, and yes recently I was able to view them , I don't get a chance to put them into the timeline because once I just view some the program just shuts down, and at this stage I am working with a new project with nothing added, and then it's gone so haven't had the chance to add effects and other things that may make it close if not enough memory or storage space , but it is recent maybe a month or at least that is when I wanted to reuse the progam, before that it may have been around September

Hi Tina.

Try Opening the program and on the top task bar of the program go to file / Program / Settings and go to the device tab. Check and see if the Import, Processing, and Export options are set to the HD graphics option. If they are, try changing all of them to CPU and see if the program crashes and closes when you add files. If it doesn't crash then it is possible you need to update the Intel graphics driver. Go here and download the top driver out of the two showing. Then try going back to the program settings and using the Intel HD 530 again.

Hi

Is the laptop a HP 250 - there should be a label on the underneath with the model number?

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the MP4 clips that causes a crash and post the results, see this tutorial if you are not familiar with MediaInfo  .

Hi John, Tina.

Should the search for drivers be limited to the manufacturer of the laptop then John?

That possibly means new drivers may not help and program settings need to be kept to CPU if they are not already.

It may be possible a Windows update has caused the problem, maybe it has reset the mic and camera permission settings. You are also a couple of Windows versions behind. I know my copy of MEP 2022 was corrupted by a Windows update not long ago but was cured with another update a few days later. I am not saying your problem is the same but it may be worth updating windows to the current build as that appears to be fault free with MEP at least. I just find it strange those files were usable before but not now.

That is a good question, the answer is 'that depends'. . .

. . . . It may be possible a Windows update has caused the problem . . . .

That is quite possible, some manufacturers customise the drivers which can cause some oddities with devices, eg the drivers for my audio chipset in my PC delivered through Windows update, had some of the inputs/outputs removed.

@Tina-Baker

Hi

I would also suggest you check the default program for opening mp4 video files in Windows - if it is set to Windows Media Player (WMP) change it to Films & TV - see this Microsoft article for how to do this. WMP is being deprecated.

Thank-you for your reply's and yes Cube Ace I do use Films and Tv, so as it turned out there was yet another Windows update that I just finishing installing, and funny enough I can now view the video clips, but today I did get an error messages and the program suggested I close down , that has never happened before but it would not close and I couldn't do anything I had to close it in the task manager, I hoping this is a one off ,,,, I will spend the next couple of days checking the comments from you all and playing with the program, and hope I can make sense from all the information you have all given me I hope its fixed itself,Wwould reinstalling the program help to fix any issues?

@Tina-Baker @johnebaker

Hi Tina.

In our experiences, an uninstall of the program normally makes things worse unless you know how to purge all the files and program detritus thoroughly that the uninstalling process leaves behind, that is then picked up by the re-install. It can get messy and not helpful. Sometimes an uninstall is unavoidable but really should be very last resort and seldom cures the underlying problem.

(John actually mentioned Films and TV, not me, I still have and sometimes use Windows Media, although my default playback program is Films and TV.)

Hi,

Instead of going to review a video, try going to a folder that has only photos. Can you import some photos successfully into a new project?

I have noticed that recent versions of MS/MEP/VPX do not like certain videos, not even in the folder. If there is a corrupt video file, the program tries to read it and then crash.

I also have had recently, a couple of videos that the program reads, imports but with each step freezes up for about a minute. Even loading the project containing this video stalls for a while. I redid it with Handbrake, replacing the original file, and the project loaded very quickly.

So, you may have to do some checking of your files. When you find a video clip that causes the program to crash, note it and move it to another folder. Try again to preview the videos in the folder until you have isolated any that may be causing problems.

Yes I can view photos no issue, and sometimes I can view video clips but I haven't tried to bring them into time line ... this is just to follow up on comments made, I do seem to be able to stay in the program longer than before , as before it might shut down after viewing only 1 or 2 clips, I am now getting an error message for some video ( this is new... program would just shut down before) I will attach a file picture and have noticed it is saying something about a fmp4 file, which I looked up but at this stage I am wary or downloading any program until I get some information from you people and do you think this is all the issue could this one thing solve all the things I have had problems with? also would anyone think converting these clips to again mp4 in a converter would help?

CubeAce wrote on 11/14/2022, 3:10 AM

@Tina-Baker

Hi Tina.

Did you have an older copy of the program and use the alternative MP4 codec to export render your files?

If so, that may explain why @AAProds is not able to use the current versions of the programs. I've copied him in because I can't remember the name of the alternative codec pack but I know it was his favorite method for exporting his projects. I think the missing codec can be downloaded from the appropriate website but don't until at least @johnebaker can verify it won't do any further harm as Magix products on average do not like additional codecs downloaded onto a system and my web searches are coming up with security issues regarding using FFmpeg.

Yes. It may be those affected files may need re-encoding using Handbrake or similar before they can be used again in newer versions of the program.

[Edit] Main Concept. That was the alternative codec pack. 👍😅
