Problems converting MXV to MP4

RayBin wrote on 3/1/2025, 12:57 AM

Just bought Moviestudio Platinum 2024. I have a number of videos in MXV, which were digitized from VHS using Magix Rescue Your Video Tapes. I want to do a quick convert to MP4 before spending time learning how to edit. I have loaded the first video into the time line. I selected File > Export. I am then presented with a range of formats including MPEG4 in a drop down menu. BUT I cannot select any of them. It appears that the conversion function hasn't been downloaded as the list is in a lighter type face. What have I missed?

@RayBin

That is very odd. I can open old MXVs with MMS 2025 OK, and MMS 2024 should be able to as well. There is no separate download for the export function that I am aware of. This is my Export Movie As menu. Are your colours the same?

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thanks for ypur reply. As you can see from the screenshot, the formats are in a faded font from the left hand drop down. As I say, I cannot select any of these

@RayBin

Hi

. . . . As you can see from the screenshot, the formats are in a faded font from the left hand drop down. . . .

The export options, being greyed out, would suggest there is nothing on the timeline in Movie Studio 2024, check there is a MXV file, which depending on how you added the file to the timeline, should be on track 1, the export options should then become available.

. . . . I want to do a quick convert to MP4 before spending time learning how to edit. . . .

Assuming you mean you are going to edit the converted to mp4 files, there is no need for this, the MXV files can be edited without conversion

To help with using Movie Studio, there is a list of tutorials here which will help with the learning process. Some of them are using an older version of Movie Studio when it was call Movie Edit Pro, however the principals are the same.

Thanks John. If you look at my screenshot, there is the start of a video....showing the start screen of the Aiwa VCR I used to upload the original VHS video.....and I can play this video with MMS. Can this happen even if the video is not in the time line? If so, I must be importing the video incorrectly but I cannot see how

Please show us a screenshot of the timeline without the export screen overlaying it.

One other thought: have you registered and activated your purchase, using the supplied serial key?

@RayBin The video can be played from the Import tab, hover over the thumnail #& a play/trim/import pop-up will show, so it would show in the preview window as in your pic if played,

But the odd thing is - top right it says 8.00 mins, this is the default timeline length when nothing has been imported to the timeline, If the video is viewed from the Import tab as describe above & not added to the timeline the 8.00min time would alter to match the video you're are previewing..?

You are better off showing the full screen.

I think I have solved the problem. I was presented with a dialog box (I have no idea where it came from!) , which asked me if I wanted to download MPEG4. After I did this I have been able to select the export codecs

Gid wrote on 3/1/2025, 4:48 AM

@RayBin I did consider that MPEG4 download that needs to be installed when first using MMS but rejected it because I didn't think it affected other export options, just the MPEG4 one .. 🤷‍♂️

Hi Jeff, I had registered the product etc. I am having to uninstall and reinstall the program so there is not point in sending the screenshot you need but thanks.

@RayBin

I am having to uninstall and reinstall the program

Regrettably, this may not solve whichever problem you now have!

Because a number of files/folders/registry entries are created after the initial installation process is completed the default Uninstaller does not know they exist and so does not remove them. Bitter experience for a number of us is that these are often the very files etc. which created the problem in the first place!

I would strongly recommend reading this page from the Magix web site. Although written for an older version of the software the advice/guidance is still pertinent regarding how to locate these "additional" files etc.

Also, you may wish to consider first deactivating your current installation since you can only have two instances of the software registered as active at any one time. You can do this via the Help menu of the old installation or via your Magix account. Log in, go to My products, find the listing for your software, click on Show more details and then deactivate any listed installation which is no longer usable.

@RayBin I don't think you'll need to install it again, It's a codec that gets installed on your system separately so still should be there even if you uninstall MMS (Magix Movie Studio), also in the future if you upgrade it doesn't need to be installed again,,

I might be wrong with details but someone else will confirm 👍
