Problem with tracks being deleted by other Music Maker projects

Stu-Himsley wrote on 8/31/2020, 6:47 PM

Music Maker keeps overwriting tracks on projects which I'm not saving back to.

Eg: I'll record and save a guitar track on Project D, then find that the same guitar track from Project D has also recorded to Project A and deleted one of Project As tracks in the process.

Very frustrating and has destroyed hours of work.

Any tips on stopping this from happening?

Hi,

That is a bit vague, but I'll take a guess. When you record with a guitar, and I presume that it is audio not MIDI, you have to give the recording a name in the parameters. By default, it's the name of the project followed by 0001, 2, 3 etc. If you did not name and save Project D before recording, and also did not name and save Project A before recording, then your recordings might end up with the same name, one overwriting the other.

If you create a new project, it is called New.MMM and the first recording will be New - 0001.wav. If you then save the project as Project A, the recording is still New - 0001.wav.

If you open a new project, it too is called New.MMM and the first recording will be New - 0001.wav overwriting any file with the same name.

Before recording anything, always save the project with a unique name so that your recordings have the name of the project as a prefix.

So, what are the names of your recordings?

Thanks for your reply, John. I should have supplied more detail. I definitely do "Save As" before starting a new project. And I title each project as Song 1, or Song 2 etc. Then I record tracks as 'audio'. Most of the time it works, but about 1 in 20 tracks will wind up recording over another project as well as the project I'm saving to. It's completely random too. I often recorded multiple tracks in a session, and the rogue track which ends up recording to another project might be the 3rd or 4th track I laid down in that session.

@Stu-Himsley

Are you creating a new folder/directory for each project you start?

I ask, because it "sounds" (pun intended) as if you are storing all your takes/recordings in one folder, hence some earlier ones are being overwritten. By creating one folder to store ALL the tracks for ONE project you should be able to completely avoid this problem. That's how I work and have never seen the problem of existing files form earlier projects being overwritten.

I am storing all recordings in one folder. Great advice, I'll start to store project files in separate folders. I'll report back here with the results next week. Thanks!
