Problem with playback

I am experiencing playback problems when editing - the playback is very jerky and the cursor does not move along the timeline.

I am using Windows 8.1 on a HP Pavilion laptop with Intel i5 processor

More information is needed:

Video format on the timeline?

Computer specification and is the i5 dual core or quad core?

Have you enabled the folowing:

Proxy file creation shown below
Use GPU option shown below
the preview monitor options shown below

NOTE: even with all the above enabled if you are working with HD video and the timeline is complicated eg multiple videos in collage or Picture in Picture or you have used non accelerated transitions / effects then playback may still be jerky.
