Problem with Movie Studio Edit 2024 Platinum

Robert-Doherty wrote on 11/30/2023, 10:30 PM

I am running on Windows 10 with dual screens.

My issue is with swapping from Storyboard Mode to Timeline Mode. After setting up transitions, text etc in Storyboard I select Timeline and the program freezes thereby the need to shut down the computer and start again. Very frustrating, does anyone have a solution for me. Thanks for any help.

Hi

We need more information to help diagnose the issue(s) you are having:

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) you are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are the graphics card/integrated GPU drivers up to date? Note: do not rely on Windows saying they are up to date - it can be several updates behind what the GPU manufacturers release.

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab  would help.

Hi John, with my limited knowledge of computers I have updated my profile as suggested with the info you suggested however it may still be lacking, particularly with the Audio and Graphics card information, I am not sure if I have managed to cover those. With regard to the Program settings and Device options I have uploaded both, hopefully that you noted. Also attached is screen shot of Sound Device and Hardwear Resources which my provide the missing data

Sorry, may be more than you wanted.

Hi Robert and welcome to the user to user forums.

Those are two nice monitors you have. Do you do a lot of photo editing?

I don't see that you have a dedicated separate graphics card card listed on your system, and depending on the file types and resolutions you are using you could be overtaxing your CPUs inboard graphics chip. ( The HD 730) that tells me you probably have an Intel 10th generation processor.

First try going to the Intel download site and check that your graphics driver is up to date. If you do need to update your drivers try that first. Use the automated tool there as suggested.

If that doesn't help.

In the Magix Movie Edit program try going to the following settings by clicking on the File button in the top left hand corner of the program. Scroll down to Settings and select Program. A grey box will appear. Select the Device options tab. In the Hardware acceleration section you will probably see that your Intel (R) UHD Graphics 730 has been selected for all three choices of Import , Processing, and Export. If you select the middle Processing box by pressing the looking symbol and selecting CPU from the drop down list instead of the Intel (R) UHD Graphics 730 and press the OK button and see if that helps. The program may become a bit more sluggish in use but if it doesn't crash then it was because the Intel HD 730 chip is not coping on it's own with the workload you are asking of it.

Compared to photo editing, video editing is much more demanding on a computer system. Normally we would be using a dedicated graphics card as well as is indicated in the specs page on the Magix website for this program.

While a dedicated GPU is not always 100% necessary for this it does make video editing a much smother and trouble free experience.

Hi

If you are working single monitor, and the full program interface is on the FP91G+ move it to the E2200 monitor and try switching timeline modes to see if the program freezes.

If you are working dual monitor with Movie Studio 2024, the different resolutions and Aspect Ratios (AR) of the 2 monitors, the E2200HD is 1920 x 1080 16:9 AR and the FP91G+ is 1240 x 1020 ~5:4 AR, is likely to cause some issues with switching depending on how you have the program arranged over the 2 monitors.

Put the program interface on the E2200 and the Preview monitor only onto the FP91G+ and check if switching from Storyboard to Timeline mode freezes the program.

When I was working with 2 dissimilar monitors, I found that the most stable configuration was to have the Preview monitor pane on the smaller, lower resolution monitor. I now work with 2 identical monitors.

Ray and John, Thank you both for the advice. I will set up my screens with the E2200HD as number 1 and see what that does for me as that seems to be the easiest.

I am a Tactile Learner (as I learn by seeing someone do something then I am good to go, reading instructions or being told how to do it goes right over my head) that said I think I can follow Rays description so will do that as well, I think even I can follow that. Surprisingly I have been a technical writer, writing manuals for trades people who are in the main also Tactile Learners.

I will report back further after doing some changes. Robert

Hi John and Ray, I have moved my screens ESS00HD as number 1, this is much better to work on however did not resolve my freezing issue. So, went to advise from Ray on the graphics driver and got frightened by the info shown, see attached.

Ray, I will await further direction, should I proceed with the remainder of your description before resolving if my graphics card is up to date?

Hi Robert.

I have been using that site since I first built my computer. If you are asking is it safe then I would say yes.

If you are asking which driver it is, it should be the second one, the last one shown in your image. The site should also check that your other drivers are also up to date but if a Non Intel driver is listed it may just be showing the one that is installed, not necessarily the latest one. For that you really have to visit the manufacturers websites.

Here is what I get when I log in using the link I provided above. A wrong driver normally will refuse to install.

Ray.

Hi John and Ray, This was a bit hairy, as I read it I had 2 different recommendations, my machine is 11th Gen so I went with 101_3790_101_2114 as it was for 6th _13th Gen as opposed to 101_2125 covering 7th to 10th Gen. Crossed everything and took a punt, loading went without a hitch and nothing has blown up. I had high hopes, however still have the issue of my number 1 screen freezing. Shame a good smack with a hammer won't fix it. I will check out the setting as described in Ray's suggestion on the 2nd Dec. Thank you both, Robert

Hi Ray, I went through your procedure to the Processor setting and found all 3 settings on UHG 730, this surprised me and I expected that all 3 would be showing the new driver, anyway I set the Processing tab to CPU and tried the action with switching from Storyboard to Timeline and freezing again. I guess those 3 settings should show the new driver or am I off the track? Is my system up to the job I wonder!

Hi Robert.

If you had gone for the wrong driver it would simply not have loaded.

If you do not have a second graphics card in the computer then the program would load all of it's settings to use the Intel UHD 730 GPU chip within your Intel CPU.

It is important that any other drivers that the website said you needed to update that you did those as well.

There is more than one reason for the program to freeze but I have to now take my grandson to school.

I will get back to you in about an hour and a half with a series of pictures to help you navigate other possibilities to check out. There are not that many possibilities as the program seems to be loading videos / images but then freezing. I'm sure we will get a solution.

For now if you are online, you could start the system task manager by pressing down on all three of the Ctrl Alt and Delete keys on your keyboard at once and selecting Task Manager from the list that will be at the bottom of the list that will appear on a blue screen. Do not be alarmed as that is normal. Then click on the Performance tab and you should get a lot of boxes with lines in most of them showing the amount of activity of each component in your system.

How big the list is depends on how many drives you have connected and would show any additional graphics card.

Run your program and see if anything seems to getting close to running at 100%.

Ray.

@Robert-Doherty

Hi Robert.

You may feel like you don't know much but at least you managed to produce screen grabs and post them to your reply. That is more than a lot of people who post problems to these forums can do. So I don't think you will have any problems with a bit of fault finding. 🤞😉.

If your drivers are now up to date the next most common problem for a video editing program to freeze is a lack of free drive space on the C: drive. Ideally that should never get smaller than 10GBs. Ideally, personally, I would like much more than that on my own system.

That is because the program when running will create temp files which can take up a lot of disk space while the program is running and if it can't write them in a sequential manner on the drive the program will either slow down searching for places to place the data, fractured into smaller parts all over the drive, or will the program will freeze if it can't find any space left to write the data to.

There is also a small amount of space reserved for the operating system which will not be used so the computer doesn't freeze.

To check the amount of free space on your C: drive, open any folder you have access to and then repeatedly click the small up arrow in the top left corner of that folders task bar unit you get to the drive view.

The drive view will just possibly show a few folders above the drive icons / images below the drive data without all the additional program boxes appearing as in the image directly below. For now just check the amount of space on the C: drive.

If you have an external drive connected or additional internal drives, those will also show up. Check to see if the C: drive has more than 10GBs of free space as in part A of the image below. If the drives doesn't show exactly the same data as my image and has no detail of amount of drive space that is used or free, apply part B

If the C: drive does have more than 10GBs of free space ignore the following steps in the image as the problem is not there and we will have a look at other possibilities, so you can ignore the rest of the information and procedural steps below.

---------------------------------------------------------------

If the drive has less than 10GBs go to part B by right clicking on the Drive image and selecting Properties. That will then bring up part C. Left Click on the Disk Clean-up button. That will lead you to part D.

Use the scroll slider to the right within the box containing any file you think you don't need and see what you want to delete. Any box with a tick in it means the associated files will be deleted. I personally don't delete the Temporary Internet files but do tick the rest.

Anything needed for Windows to work that has been deleted will be generated again as needed but the history up to the point of deletion will be lost.

Look at the Total amount of disk space you gain underneath. Press OK to delete the files. You will get a warning message asking if you are sure. If you are, press the Delete button.

Now, if you have never done this before that could free up a lot of drive space. If you do do that regularly or has set up an automatic disk cleaning schedule or had someone else set one up then not a lot of space is likely to be created. At this point do not proceed beyond part D unless you have checked everything other than your video editing program is not working as it should. Whilst proceeding to part E and F will still leave your last restore point (The one you are currently using) on your machine, all previous restore points will be lost. So any problems in general use that you may have will not be as easy to sort out. So if you have any other programs you use please first check they all work and the programs save the work OK. If everything seems to be running well then take the two last steps.

Restore points takes the operating system back to an earlier state of being updated. They are created automatically when Windows updates itself and they can individually be huge. Over 4GBs each sometimes. You could have quite a few on the system if you have never taken this step before.

Personally I never have older restore points on my system and regularly clean and keep my C: drive in good order. Although I have many many broken registry links it doesn't impede the performance of the machine in any noticeable way. A few second here and there sometimes when loading a program. That is about it. The last time I did a clean install of the operating system on my machine was before the 19th of May 2020.

I can see people on the forum rolling their eyes at seeing that fact. 🙄😅😲 I have so many programs that are finicky to install I try my best to avoid that where possible. It takes me over a week to get everything running as I would like it again.

Going through my system once a month and doing my disk house keeping regularly has allowed me to avoid most of the pitfalls of an untidy C: drive. The main thing to avoid is using any type of disk keeping/cleaning program. Those type of programs inevitably (IMHO) cause more problems that they are worth and are almost impossible to undo any damage they create.

Good luck.

Ray.

Hi Robert.

If possible I need a reading during loading of the project and during playback, highlighting the memory used section.

Also you can change the processor view.

Before MMS is loaded on my machine.

During playback. Notice it is using more ram than your machine has. This is s short project in 4K.

changing how the processor is monitored to show all cores.

You may be running out of system ram if you are using 4K video clips.

@Robert-Doherty

Hi Robert.

Sorry for the previous short reply. More grandchild duties.

So I'll try to explain the above. I now know you have an 11th gen Intel i5 with six cores which would give you 12 virtual cores. That should be enough but there is no separate graphics card so the internal CPU's HD730 is using up a lot of the system memory trying to run two different resolution monitors and do the 3D graphics processing and video decoding. If you look at the memory in use section you will see there is a commit charge figure which will be much higher than the amount of ram you have. I think that may well be the problem. The processor itself if it had an additional graphics card that had a minimum of 4GBs of memory (preferably double that but 4GBs should help if only editing footage up to 4K) and doubled the amount of ram memory from 8GBs to 16GBs then the system would cope if the power supply can handle the load of adding the additional graphics card.

If you just doubled the amount of ram and only used one monitor the system may also be able to cope without having to add an additional graphics card.

For now just unplug one monitor and do what I suggested earlier which was

In the Magix Movie Edit program try going to the following settings by clicking on the File button in the top left hand corner of the program. Scroll down to Settings and select Program. A grey box will appear. Select the Device options tab. In the Hardware acceleration section you will probably see that your Intel (R) UHD Graphics 730 has been selected for all three choices of Import , Processing, and Export. If you select the middle Processing box by pressing the looking symbol and selecting CPU from the drop down list instead of the Intel (R) UHD Graphics 730 and press the OK button and see if that helps.

If it does reduce or eliminate your current problem I am probably correct in my other observations.

The other thing that may also help a lot is buying a good fast external hard drive for all your project video files to reside on. Having the program read the files, process them and add temp files, then having to export all to the same drive really eats up CPU usage or may slow down the whole process if one or more of the chain of components is not keeping up with the rest.

I think @johnebaker is correct though, that running the two monitors at once is too much at present for the specifications of this machine for the use of video editing.

As I suspect it is a prebuilt machine as opposed to a home built one we would need to know the exact model and make to know if any of the components can be added that I referred to. The motherboard may not have the needed slots and the power supply may not be powerful enough to support the power requirements of adding a dedicated graphics card.

Your processor and inboard GPU is not really the main problem but the lack of additional support from additional hardware may well be a problem if you are dealing with 4K or above video. Even using HD material may be a stretch when using two monitors while using a video editing package. For just playing back such files using Film and TV or a third party player like VLC Player would not be a problem.

Yes we are 13 hours apart, time wise.

I have edited the above post as I now realise the problem John EB was referring to was different aspect ratios of the monitors, not the resolutions. However the same problems remain.

Ray.

Hi Ray, I am afraid I have become a bit overwhelmed. While I can follow your suggestions some of the terminology is completely foreign to me. I had assumed when John said to enter my details in my profile that you would view that, so have added that to you now and that may provide some pertinent details.

"I am in my 80th decade and low level computer literate. In the past I have used Sony Vegas Movie Studio for my movies and have now moved to Magix and feeling my way with Movie Studio Edit 2024 Platinum. The following info I have gleaned from my system and it may be a bit jumbled.
I run a System Type X64 based PC with Windows 10 version 22H2, RAM of 8.00GB, Processor 11th Gen intel (R)Core (TM) i5-11400 @ 2.60 GHz, 2592Mhz, 6Core(s) 12 Logi .... Graphics Intel(R) UHD 730, Audio Realtek High Definition. I have 2 displays, 1 is my main 1280 x 1024 and the second is 1920 x 1080, I use a 3TB external drive for all my movies and photos."

In this current computer I was beavering away on Sony Vegas which I had from my previous computer system, therein I had an additional hard drive specifically for doing my home videos, however I had continual problems. So went online for an upgrade of my Sony system and inadvertently purchased Magix MSE which I thought was the same system upgraded, but no! its completely different.

When purchasing the current computer I had no intention of doing home movies, so went for a bog standard machine, however grand children have changed that and I am coming to the conclusion that the machine is not up to the job. I will not give up but I need to let my brain catch up. I have disconnected the smaller screen and opened MSE and was able to open a movie that I was working on, it froze in Storyboard, however after rebooting was able to open and run the system in Timeline. Does this tell me I can only work in Timeline?

I have attached a snip of the computer spec which I have found to day.

I think this machine is Microsoft although there is nothing on the case to confirm that.

Thanks for your ongoing help,

Regards Robert

Hi Robert.

No problem. I am 13 or possibly a few year younger than yourself and have my fair share of problems operating my smart phone 😂. Some people much younger than yourself struggle just as much if not more so. We all have things we are not good at.

The older copy of Vegas you were running indeed needed a much less powerful computer and should have worked on your current machine although I can say the Vegas offerings seem more prone to crashing and glitching than Magix Movie Studio.

I'm afraid all of the information you have just given me I had already worked out apart from the size of your main C: drive and that it is a complete machine supplied by a manufacturer. That C: drive is pretty small by today's standards and assuming everything such as the actual video files is on that drive you could be very close to filling it up. That could be yet another reason you are having problems and we could know the answer to that if you could complete part A of my earlier post.

For all the problems this program is causing you, the simplest course of action would seem to be not to swap from Story board to time line modes, but stick to one view. At the end of the day the program is asking your machine to do too many things at once and the machine does not have the adequate resources to cope with those requests.

Ideally for video editing now, you need a machine with an additional third party graphics card and quite an expensive one as even a middle of the road one which could cope could be over $300 as well as more than one drive so any files in use could be placed on the second drive. Also probably twice as much ram as your current machine has although with the addition of a separate graphics card which would have additional faster memory built in, might not be needed. That would make running the two monitors more possible as well as helping the program to run smoother and with less if not no freezing.

This is all a shame as the processor itself should have worked. It's just the support network it needs is missing from your system.

I myself am running a machine with a CPU two generations behind your machine (3 years older) but with more additional components so that the graphics section and main CPU is not being overtaxed. However I have not upgraded to the latest program versions because I don't think my system would run them well. Each newer program is made to run optimally on the next generation of hardware (currently three years newer than your machine and six years newer than my machine) so eventually older machines just don't have the ability to run the programs well any more.

One last idea would be to try to find a new boxed version of Magix Movie Edit Pro 2020 or 2021 which should run better on your machines specifications but there are no guarantees. The specifications needed to run those two versions were less than the current version.

Ray.

@Robert-Doherty and all

I don't believe this is an "inadequate system" issue. The program seems to run OK if not switching between Storyboard and Timeline. Because of that, I think it's Magix problem.

Rob, it depends on what files you are editing, but I can assure you that your current system is more than capable of doing video editing. Have a look at my signature and note my System 2. It's 10 years older than yours, with no meaningful extra graphics card, and I was able to edit 1920x1080 videos OK. Slow, jerky and slow export times, but I got by.

As for looking for earlier versions of MEP, IMO that is not necessary. MMS 2024 will run happily on your system and any earlier version will not be faster or more stable. I've run every version of Magix from 2019 to 2024 on my old slowcoach machine and performance did not change at all. You've got a good CPU and a great UHD graphics GPU. So, going backwards in versions will only take away the faster export times that the new version has got.

My suggestions? Make sure your Intel graphics driver up to date and wean yourself off Storyboard; once you get the hang of the Timeline, your editing will be so much easier. I went back to Storyboard to have a look and choked on the lack of info available! There is so much more visual feedback in Timeline mode. In fact, I wouldn't object if they removed Storyboard mode completely. 😉

Hardware-wise, you could get the grandies to chuck in some more RAM (2x8GB) and an external graphics card; have a look on Facebook marketplace for a second-hand NVidia GTX-1050 or greater. They're cheap here. The more money you spend on a graphics card, of course, the better your experience will be.

And I'd be putting in a bug report to Support. IMO the program shouldn't crash just because you're swapping modes.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

First up, Ray, my brain is rested, and Part A has percolated through, attached is a snip showing Drive info, looks pretty good, I think plenty of umph.

Secondly AAProds words are pretty compelling, and I will continue with my editing with 2 screen and ignoring storyboard, as a backup one of my grandsons has a "Masters in Computer something or other" so I will give my brain a rest and use some of his to see what he suggests.

@Robert-Doherty

Hi Robert.

First thank you for the image as you do seem to be using two hard drives. That is the first time I have had that information. Assuming you are using the second drive for your video files and because the C: drive still has 200GBs of storage space left it narrows down the possible problems as it probably isn't drive space that is the problem.

If you could now go back and see if you could go through the steps I asked you to do on my reply dated 12/6/2023, 6:58 AM and run the program and take a screen shot of the memory in use while playing back your project we could find out if the cure could be as simple as adding more ram. That would also be by far the cheapest upgrade that could work. Less than possibly $80 and quadruple your current memory. Even if it does not fix the immediate problem it would possibly be a good move to get away from the minimum amount of ram required to run the program as the more you try to do with the program the more that ram usage will go up.

I said above quadruple your system memory as that $80 would get you 32GBs of ram which would put you in the safe zone for memory meaning you should not normally ever need more unless you become a power user. Also it would allow you to just use two sticks in your primary ram slots on the motherboard. The motherboard may only have two slots anyway. Do not attempt to buy ram without your son's help. They will need to be close to identical to the ram you are currently using, just a larger capacity.

Equally just unplugging one monitor and trying to switch timeline modes to see if the program still freezes or crashes could then point to needing a second graphics card. It may not. These are just steps to see what triggers the freezing or crash.

Yes your system should cope with the program and probably is but I feel John EB was correct in his assumption that trying to provide two different aspect ratios to two different monitors was probably causing the system to do too many calculations in real time and that somewhere that is causing a bottleneck between the Inboard Intel GPU and the CPU and ram. It is like a golden triangle. All must work within a range of timings and capacity.

The fact that most of us do use two or sometimes even three monitors and that program does not crash just because we change the timeline view says to me it is definitely a hardware issue somewhere in the chain.

Please do send in a crash report as Magix has way more systems to test their programs on that we as individual do.

What Al didn't say was that he eventually upgraded his system to one more powerful than my own because he was fed up with the performance issues he was having. Also at no time do I think he ever had two mismatching monitors connected to his earlier system and he had the help of an additional graphics card he could plug a second monitor into. So to my mind, not really a comparison.

Also although Al said your system should be working he also suggested an additional graphics card and additional ram.

With that I agree wholeheartedly although in the UK trying to find a cheaper second hand graphics card like the nvidia 1050 or greater is actually more expensive than buying a brand new nvidia 3060 and the nvidia 3060 in most instances would be more powerful than a 1050 or similar 10 or even 20 nvidia series card. That cost difference may well not be the case in your part of the world and may be worth doing so I don't know.

I would also urge you not to get an AMD graphics card. They are cheaper but do not seem to work with the program as well.

It would be a good idea to get your son involved and read this completer topic before any hardware purchases (If any) are involved.

Ray.

[Edit] I had one more thought that may help.

You have an external drive capable of 5 Gbps. That should be fast enough but needs to be connected to a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port of higher (USB-C) to get those speeds. USB 3.2 Gen one ports and USB-C ports look like these.

Note the little blue tab on the USB 3 port and the shape of the USB 3 port.

If your drive is connected to a lower speed port like the one on the left, that could be your problem.

Ray.

Hi

Regarding the issue with the switching from Storyboard to Timeline mode, I agree with @AAProds comment re work in Timeline mode only.

@CubeAce commented - 'Assuming you are using the second drive for your video files and because the C: drive still has 200GBs of storage space left it narrows down the possible problems as it probably isn't drive space that is the problem'

Is this drive an external Western Digital MyPassport Blue drive?

If so then:

  • Ray commented:- You have an external drive capable of 5 Gbps' whilst this is true, in reality I would not expect a maximum speed of more the 2.5 - 3 Gbps with an average speed somewhat lower.

  • Working from an external drive can have issues which may or may not cause drive not availalble issues if the drive or USB port go to sleep and do not respond to a wake up call fast enough. I had this issue with my laptop using a high speed external USB device - the Power Management adjustment I mention below does help.

An internal second working drive would be more stable then using an external drive.

You can adjust the Power Management of the USB ports, in Windows to never turn off., however the USB drive may not have the option to remain on.

@Robert-Doherty

Hi Robert.

Because you have a lot of drive space on both drives I think part B is no longer a needed step to do. Drive space is not a problem.

I am more interested in the amount of memory being used while the program is running and which port the external drive is plugged into. I need that screenshot of the amount of memory in use while the program is running.

While John is correct that you may well not see its top rated transfer speeds it will be slower connected to the wrong type of port. It must have that blue tab.

As for the external drive shutting down or going to sleep.

Go to Windows / Settings / System / Power and sleep / Related settings (Additional power settings in blue lettering) and try selecting ultimate performance. That should stop the shutting down of any drives.

I take it when video editing the laptop is always connected to the mains.
