Problem with Blu ray burn at Encoding Stage

Having selected Blu ray option in the Wizard and set Burn settings, I start the Burn process,stages 1 to 5. Stage1 is complete in 17 mins and the progress is shown on the upper progress bar,and stage 2 start is indicated. However after running for a further 2 hrs no further progress is shown,the countdown clock continues to run.

My past experience burning 1hr plus Blu ray disks has been good so I was surprised to see an apparent problem.The are no messages or warning signs to indicate a problem but the lack of progress with encoding suggests otherwise. On cancelling the process I am told the programme is still running. I have also tried the AVCHD disk option but same problem. The video has a run time of 20mins and a file size of 1.38 MB,hence I would expect some stage 2 progress after 2 hrs.

The encoder settings are 1x speed,bit rate 29536 KB/sec.,quality 4, MEPG 2 ,std PAL 1920x1080i 25fps.

My hardware/software is unchanged (apart from Windows updates),since last use of the burn Wizard - Windows 10 prof. MEP 2016 version 15.0.0.107(UDP3).

Would appreciate some help.

Hi Langford

Assuming there is only 1 movie in the project, then step 2 is the encoding of the disc menu.

If you made changes to the disc menu, then this may be the cause of the 'hang'.

If there is more than 1 movie in the project then an issue with an object/effect on the timeline may be causing the hang.

Is there a reason for encoding as MPEG-2, the most common, and default, format for Blu-Ray is AVCHD (h.264)?

Thank you for your response.

Yes only one movie,disk menu has film menu and 2 chapters.I am not quite sure how to interpret "changes",I made adjustments to the menu during the composition process, would this be classed as a change. Is the function Encode All and Rewrite Chapter Menus relevant here.

Regarding the choice of MPEG 2 codec, I have used this as in the past members of the family have complained they cannot play AVCHD disks.

Not sure if this is relevant,source material is AVCHD files.

Yes - very relevant - if you do not use Encode All and the 2 rewrite options, changes made to the project after he previous burn will not be updated in the disc when burning again.

Interesting given AVCHD is the more common encoding and all BD players support it - the only cause I know of that would create a non playable disc on some players is if the Bitrate is increased to too high a value - by default 18.0 Mb/s is the standard maximum bitrate - increase this too high, eg 25 Mb/s or higher, can produce unplayable discs for some BD players.

Personally I always create discs encoded h.264 ( AVC/AVCHD) - normally at 18 Mb/s bitrate, however my last project was reduced slightly to 17.5 Mb/s maximum so I could squeeze 2.5 hours of video on to one disk with no difference in quality.

Earlier players did not necessarily support AVCHD H.264 - you had to make sure it was specified with a symbol on the box when i bought mine.

by default 18.0 Mb/s is the standard maximum bitrate - increase this too high, eg 25 Mb/s or higher, can produce unplayable discs for some BD players.

18Mbps is the default in MEP for an H.264 disc but 29Mbps for MPEG2 1080i. MPEG2 needs a higher bitrate because it is less efficiently compressed, however it is also easier to decode.

Wiki states:- BD Video movies have a maximum data transfer rate of 54 Mbit/s, a maximum AV bitrate of 48 Mbit/s (for both audio and video data), and a maximum video bit rate of 40 Mbit/s.

Regarding the function Encode All,it seems to me this only applies after a previous burn.In this case there has been no previous burn and the adjustments made to the menu were during the Edit process.

Thanks for your views on the use of AVCHD format and I will keep these in mind together with those from Peter.on the next burn.

It appears I am no further forward in solving the stage 2 encoding problem.Is it fair to say the problem is in the encoding of the menu,if so how can it be resolved ?.

This film is of short duration and the omission of a menu would not detract from its intended purpose of a record of a family event if it is deleted.

However as a technical issue I feel a little further investigation is worthwhile and a solution may benefit other users.

There is an action of mine which may or may not be relevant as it takes place at start of the movie, the area of the menu.

I like to provide a "soft "start and ease the viewer in. I do this with a few seconds blank space in the video and audio channels but with the added music track running,I then fade in the other two tracks.This of course prompts the blank space warning cleared with the ignore button,

Any suggestions on where to go now.

That is one option, if acceptable.

This could be a template issue - in the past some have been known to 'play up' occasionally - try using a different menu template with no alterations - the most 'consistent' one I have found is Red Smoke - see image below

I have found a solution to my Encoding problem using the Manage Movies - Export (MVD file) - New Project - Import (MVD file) route.

This route is also suggested in a Magix Support reply of 3-21-2019 for Video delux and Video ProX users.
