Yes on reboot. Not sure how to update soundcard driver?? I need to do this because I am having issues with sound. I did put in request in to support. If I don’t hear from them I will definitely reinstall.

PATIENT-X wrote on 2/20/2021, 7:04 PM

To update the onboard sound driver, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

Click the Hardware tab.

Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.

Double-click something like Realtek HD audio for example, and then click the Driver tab.Click Update Driver.

I have heard some folk have some sound issues.

You heard issues with Dell XPS 15 sound card?. I hope not for a $2,000 new laptop. I will contact them if sound issues continue as warranty is still in place.

Would just regular installing in system not good enough? This is so frustrating.

I was trying to get Sound Forge to record internal sounds thru instructions on a YouTube video. Followed procedures with no results. Then suddenly I couldn’t hear a lot of programs including ITunes on my external speakers. I upgraded from an old Sound Forge program to to 14 and have had nothing but problems since. Why am I paying for a newest program when there are so many bugs in it?? Then there’s no 800 number listed for support? Magix this is very lame customer service. Thanks for the support email link but this is the best magix can do for customer service? Lame. I’m used to calling software customer service and they go into my computer and fix things right away. Ok I will work on these various solutions.

@GonzoGib, the Dell/Realtek sound card is quirky, especially in the XPS series (I have a XPS-15 9550 laptop)...for instance, if one plugs in headphones (HPs) it will not switch back to the internal speakers when the HPs are unplugged unless the driver is disabled and re-enabled (or the PC is re-booted).

Otherwise, to 'record-what-you-hear', go into the PC sound settings, for 'Playback' select: Speakers/Headphones. For Record', select "Stereo mix"
Then open Sound Forge and select   "Options> Preferences> Audio"...  choose the "Windows Classic Wave" option and set the Playback option the same as the PC's sound settings . Playback= Speakers/Headphones". Set the Sound Forge Record option setting to "Stereo mix". The PC's overall volume with change the record volume level if that needs to be higher / lower.
I am not sure of the similarities between the SF-Pro and SF-AS 'Options> Preference menu').

btw, If your Dell has the 'Waves Audio' utility, disable the EQ, enhancements and such, There are also volume and mute settings in that utility which can fork things up.

Hi. Yes I have continuing sound issues. I kept trying to update Realtech sound card and was getting an error message that said there was a newer update already installed. I update all sound drivers. Then Sound Forge stated working a message popped up that Sound Forge was switching to a different sound driver. Then everything seemed to work. But yes I have noticed the headphone issue I guess. I will try your internal recording advice. And eventually call Dell customer service to get realtech soundcard working. Thanks for your help!

rraud wrote on 2/22/2021, 9:33 AM

Let us know what Dell recommends. Thanks

btw, a friend has a Win 10 Dell Inspiron, same soundcard issues as the XPS, but it was $2000 less.

@GonzoGib

As you said, you paid a fortune for laptop, Dell should get this sorted with Realtech sound, good luck.
