Problem Importing H264 vids

allardyce99 wrote on 1/5/2013, 9:58 PM

When importing h.264 (mp4) video files into Movie Edit Pro 16, they are out of synch and I am unable to successfully edit. The frame rate is incredibly slow, the sound is out of synch, and the length of the videos seems to double due to the slowness. Do I need some sort of codec? I already bought the mp4 codec years ago, which I guess only works for exporting? I don't understand why this is happening or what I can do to make the files work so I can edit. Please advise. Thanks.

Hi,

Yes you do need a h.264 codec preferably one that is current.  I would use something like "gspot" to look at the file you are having problems with and post a screen shot of the results so that we can look at the contents of the container and perhaps offer a little more help.

By the way is this a recent problem with MPEG-4 files or have you always had problems with this container format?

This is a recent problem. I haven't had issues with mp4 files in the past, but this is the first time I've worked with importing mp4s in h.264 format. Interestingly, I noticed that I can export in h.264 format, but not import.

Can you fill me in on what/where gspot is?

Hi

GSpot is a program which can analyse video and audio and tell you if the correct codecs are installed on your computer.

It is available here  http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

OK, so I'm trusting that gspot is a safe non-malware-ish program. :) I just checked it out on my work PC and it would appear that I select one of the h264 files and have the program analyze it, then post a screen shot here? Will be interesting to see since I have no problem playing them, just a problem importing them in Magix. Will do so when I get home tonight. Thanks.

Hi,

This is a safe site, I have probably the best AV/Anti-Malwre/Software firewall that exists in the consumer (and much of the corporate market).  I do not have a hardware firewall on my home machine because I cannot afford it, but so far I have not actually needed it becaus my SW Firewall takes care of pretty much everything.

You can download this app and not worry.

OK I just ran a test file through Gspot. Screen shot attached. I noticed a few interesting things. First, the Codec Status is undetermined. Second, the Pics/s and Frames/s both show 15.863, which is also the frame rate that occurs when I try to import the files into Magix. However, windows explorer shows the frame rate as 29, as does Movie Inspector in a QuickTime player. HELP!

Image doesn't seem to display here, so here's the URL to photobucket:

Hi

Should have asked in my first post - what is the video source - camera, mobile, video camera or what?

Has the Handbrake transcoder been used on this file to transfer it from the recording device to your computer?

Make and model will help.

Thanks

John

No camera involved. These are video files from a website. I did not create them myself. They are transfers from DVDs into MP4 format, and I don't know what hardware/software they used to do so. I also have WMV files from this site which I can import and edit with no problem.

So have I stumped the group? No further ideas?
