Preview rendering bug?

terrypin wrote on 11/8/2012, 6:00 AM

This looks like yet another MEP 2013 bug to me but I'd appreciate others trying to reproduce please.

To test:

1. Place 2 objects on the timeline, e.g JPGs. (Any number gives the same problem.)

2. Open Video Effects > Collages

3. Apply any 2-object collage, e.g. the first in the landscape section if you are using landscape objects.

4. Confirm that the result is as expected.

5. Now apply preview rendering to that new range.

6. All the range becomes green when finished.

7. Here, it now plays wrongly, occupying only the top left corner of the preview monitor. And previewing any collage afterwards gives the same problem. Even after undoing both the rendering and collage operations! Had to restart MEP 2013 to continue.

Hi Terry

I am a little confused  - I presume you mean Design Elements, Collages and any collage which results in a landscape image format ?

I have tried the 6 different collages in the section shown in the image and everything is OK both before and after rendering.

I would add that the my preview monitor is full screen on a second LCD monitor

Do you still have your playback video option set to half resolution?

John

Hi John,

I get to the Collages by a different route!

Thanks for trying them and then doing a preview render.

I've just had the same sudden change in my preview monitor, unrelated to rendering.

And this time I can say exactly what i did before it happened. I used Size/Position to add a KF to the start and end of a JPG. Then I exported the end frame as a single frame BMP (Alt+M). Usually my monitor then goes black (a long-standing flaw over several versions) and I have to restore it, but this time it changed to the small top left display shown.

I'm wondering if it is related to the issue we discussed about the HW Accel and 'Calculate video effects on GPU'?

Hi Terry

I too am beginning to suspect it may be a problem with the graphics card acceleration / drivers as you have mentioned.

As we are on the same longitude and I am 'Up North'  I think we can rule out phases of the moon

Hi John,

Re that last occurrence of what I'll call the 'top left corner preview problem', there was nothing to do except close and restart. And that immediately restored the correct monitor display.

Have you or Peter heard any more from Magix about the H/W accel issue?

Hi Terry

I have not heard anything more from Magix about the H/W Accel issue except that there is a problem and they are trying to fix it. In view of the other behaviours we are seeing I think it may be a while before we see a comprehensive patch.

I am pretty sure I have seen that top left corner thing at least once but I have had a similar problem for many versions of MEP when using "3D distortion" in the movement effects where I drag the handles in the monitor a small amount and then when I click back in the timeline the whole frame displaces almost completely off the left of the screen. I have to undo to correct it then make sure I select another effect - say Brightness before clicking back in the timeline to preview.

John, Peter,

I'm now convinced that 'top left corner' problem and the 'invisible objects' problem do stem directly from using H/W Acceleration.

And I only get the export error I described in
http://www.magix.info/uk/export-canceled-due-to....forum.871594.html

if I have enabled H/W Accel, regardless of whether 'Calculate video effects on GPU' is checked or not.

BTW, when doing Preview Rendering, what 'export' options are being used by MEP?

Hi Terry

I assume you have tested that by enabling and disabling H/W over as many tests as you could be bothered with.......

I can not remember what the default for preview rendering was but you can change it to what you want by going to "File > Settings > Preview rendering ( Alt+R). There are quite a few presets there although interesting to note MPEG4 is not there. I am using MXV 1920 x 1080 50P because I am working with AVCHD 1080 50P and I figure MXV will playback the smoothest.

Hi Peter,

I'd completely overlooked Settings > Preview Rendering, thanks!

Can you show me your settings please, mine currently look like this.

Or for better quality: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4019461/MEP-PreviewRendering-Settings-1.jpg

Drifting OT a bit, one of my challenges (and probably a contributor to my many setbacks!) is that I suspect I use a wider variety of source material than most.

- Digicam delivers reasonably high res JPG photos and 1920x1080 video (MOV)
- Occasional photos and videos from my smartphone
- FRAPS AVI from Google Earth and Memory-Map
- A few captures from CamStudio
- Images and video from HD and Web, of varying quality
- Music from various sources, mainly MP3 and WMA with WAV for most sound effects
- Microphone narrative

My current approach is to set projects to 1920x1080, 25fps and export my finished project to MPEG-4 at that setting. That ensures that it views optimally on my 32" TV (or my son's whopping 60" after I've uploaded it). And then I make standard DVDs if the project is substantial enough to warrant that.

Hi Terry

Yes my settings look like that except that I have changed the frame rate to 50fps in the advanced window of the right hand window, to match my source material.

I suspect you are right about your source material - you really give MEP the best workout that it could get!

I think your export choice is probably ideal too given the way we work with modern TV / Media player setups.

I know what you mean about finding time for some creative work though!

Keep up the good fight there.

All the best.

Peter
