Recently installed Movie Studio 2023. Since the install I can colour and render clips but they do not run smoothly. It would seem as if the render process did not work. All working fine with movie edit pro. Any thoughts?

@derek-brown Hi, your PC is from 2012-ish & MEP 17 is from a similar era so they will work ok together.

Your PC is old & under powered, also Windows 10/11 is recommended for 2023, so yes an upgrade is needed.

This is MS 2023 recommended specs https://www.magix.com/gb/video-editing/movie-studio/specifications/#c1477846

Hi Gid sorry probably never provided enough info. Laptop 2018 windows 10 and a decent spec.

@derek-brown Hi, can you update your Signature pls

@derek-brown

Hi

. . . . decent spec . . . .

What is the actual specification? See this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full - I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are the graphics card drivers up to date?

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab would help

What format and resolution videos are you importing on to the timeline - download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial if you are not familiar with MediaInfo on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip.

The amount of free space on the hard drive(s) you have.

Thankyou for your response.I have updated my signature as suggested. I am not sure of what information MediaInfo would provide from my video clip.I have another laptop running Edit pro and can edit render the clip with no issues. The same clip will complete the render process on 2023 but runs as if not rendered. When I originally installed 2023 and imported a clip to the timeline unlike Edit pro no dialogue box appeared asking if the clip was to be copied or imported only. So I uninstalled and reinstalled, this time the dialogue box appeared and copy was again an option. But once colour was added and then rendered. Render completed line from pink to green but played like it had not been rendered. I have crossed checked my Edit pro setting and 2023 setting seem the same. I have TB harddrive with ample space and I shoot my clips at 50fps and use slog3. The 2023 software appears to create proxy files and when I added colour to the clip plays the clip smoothly which is strange as usually in Edit pro as soon as you add colour the clip stutters to play.

@derek-brown Hi, every bit of info is helpful & you need to stop comparing with MEP17 with MS2023, there's 10yrs apart between them, MS/MEP got a new Infusion Engine a few yrs ago, it uses your PC differently to how MEP used to do, & no disrespect but your new Signature doesn't show a PC with a 'decent spec', at best it's ok,

So please download MediaInfo, it's free, it's a quick download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish,

https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

After downloading right click on your video in the windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the option at the top, Copy & Paste the info on here

That's a bit harsh Gid. You know there's been plenty of dramas with the infusion system.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi

@Former user commented - 'your new Signature doesn't show a PC with a 'decent spec', at best it's ok,'

For the video resolution and framerate your are importing, FullHD 1920 x 1080 50 fps, your computer specification is more than adequate, however:

  • are the graphics drivers both for the Intel HD 630 integrated GPU and the GTX 1050 up to date, the current versions are 31.0.101.2111 and 516.94 (31.0.15.1694) repectively.

  • if the Device options, Import, Processing and Export options in the program setting are incorrectly set this may cause issues with jerkiness in play back.

Try changing the 3 options one by one starting with all 3 set to the GTX 1050, to find the most effective combination for playback.

Thanks John

I have updated both graphic drivers as you proposed and tried alternating the options as you suggested. Unfortunately no change. The issue appears to be when the clip is transferred to the timeline the creation of the proxy files seems to happen to quickly and there is no dialogue box asking if you want to copy or import only(might be a new feature on 2023?) when colour is added and rendered the process happens very quickly and does not work. The problem seems to be in the creation of the proxy files, which then causes issues with the rendering.Am I the only user with this issue?

Former user wrote on 9/13/2022, 11:38 AM

@derek-brown Hi, the creation of Proxy files can be disabled in Settings if that is causing a problem.

When you create a project, there's an option to Copy Media to project folder,

If you tick that, the Project folder box above will become active & you can choose the destination, & also when you drag media onto the timeline you'll get the Copy or Import only option,

derek-brown wrote on 9/13/2022, 11:58 AM

Hi Gid

I had actually ticked the copy media to project folder but it still does not show the copy or import only. I disabled all the proxy setting but no difference. I thought the creation of proxy files was essentail to allow smooth playing of the clips untill you add colour.

Former user wrote on 9/13/2022, 12:19 PM

@derek-brown Hi, yes if your PC struggles to play a file proxies will help.

Google -

'What is a proxy video file?

A proxy video is a duplicate, transcoded file of a project's source footage that is smaller in data size and lower in resolution than the original video file. Video proxies are used to replace raw footage files during post-production for more efficient and faster video editing and rendering'

You say you reinstalled MS, did you do that from a file on your PC, It's possible that that orig download is corrupted, Magix downloads aren't always the best & can take some time, i have super fast broadband & a decent PC but even then some Magix downloads can take forever, try downloading MS again from My Products on the Magix website, don't touch your PC while it's downloading except when you have to tick the boxes it asks for,

I have TB harddrive with ample space'  In your signature it says you also have 128GB SSD, is this (C) Drive, the one you have Windows & Magix on?

Former user wrote on 9/13/2022, 12:26 PM

@derek-brown Would you share that file you posted MediaInfo of, open Google, at the top right there's a sq of 9 dots on Google's window, Open Google Drive, drag the file on there, when it finishes uploading, right click on the file - Share, a window will pop up, from the bottom choose Share with anyone who has this Link, Copy & paste on a new comment using the chain button at the top of a new comment.

derek-brown wrote on 9/13/2022, 2:24 PM

Window is on the C drive magix is D drive. Not sure what you mean about sharing file I copied and pasted form MediaInfo. Is there a file save somewhere? I will try Uninstall and reinstall. However I did download as you suggested.

Hi Derek.

Just a couple of questions.

How much unused space do you have on your C: drive?

Have you regularly defragmented your other hard drive?

If you open task manager while playing a video in MMS 2023 are you seeing any part of the system spiking at the same time as the playback plays up?

What is the onboard memory usage showing during playback?

Ray.

@derek-brown

Hi Derek.

An SSD should not be regularly de-fragmented. There is no need for that. I was concerned for the project drive. Fragmented drives can cause problems if the data is spread around or a file is not on contiguous sectors of the drive but if the seek times are low (a couple of milliseconds) then that is probably not the problem.

I wondered about that (ram usage or a lot of disk activity) as your videos use PCM wav files which is a lot of data flowing over a short time duration. All audio gets sent directly into ram and if there is not enough space (where the spike is) that data could written to the C: drive instead. That could well produce hiccups in playback due to the program not getting the audio from the ram. Try making sure there is very little running in the background while using MMS 2023 that's using up ram. If you leave say your web browser open that will use a lot of ram. Ram usage never gets to the full amount of usage, It will transfer data to disk well before that happens to leave room for the operating system to do its' thing. It's possible that the new version of MMS 2023 is allocating more ram to be used for audio as the specs of new machines increases over time. That I'm not sure of but seems one way of getting faster results in processing on newer computers. My projects before I add anything more than the clips I want to use, can use up a lot of ram before I even start to use effects. I think it is a possibility that the lack of ram may be contributing but I'm by no means certain. One way to find out would be to upload a long clip for Al @AAProds to try out because if he put it on to his system that only has 8GB of ram and is running the trial version of MMS 2023 on that computer we could verify the problem.

Hi Ray

I do not have audio on any clips. I have installed software programs on under spec PC/lapyops and they just do not operate without freezing etc. The 2023 behaves no differently than MEP on my laptop it just does not render.Getting assistance from support is not easy. There should be a simple test to prove the issue is hardware or software.

Whether that is silence or or not there seems to be data there and being loaded to ram.

Try loading the file into MMS using the 'place audio on a separate track' to see if an audio track is produced.

If no audio track is produced then the file doesn't have one.

If an audio track is produced, try un-linking it it from the video and deleting it and see if things improve.

@derek-brown

I would heartily endorse what @CubeAce (Ray) has written with reference to the audio in those clips. Those MediaInfo data clearly show there is audio data present, in PCM (wav) format. I very much doubt whether 22 seconds of silence would occupy 4.04MB!

In addition, I notice you say your C:\ drive has only 37.69GB free. This may well be a factor in the issue you are seeing. The Export process writes temporary data to the C:\ drive; these temporary files can be very large, usually much larger than one might expect them to be!

Not sure where the audio comes from. I use Sony 6300 camera microphone off. I only shoot property and no Audio is required until post edit. I uninstalled and reinstalled from scratch and 2023 does not create any proxy files even when selected.
