Although you haven't told us exactly which version and variant of MM you have, the first thing to check is the setting in the screenshot below:

Is the highlighted box ticked?

Yes the highlighted box is ticked. The problem occurs when for some reason the yellow bar that runs across the top of the screen ends up as a tiny yellow "box" on the left hand side (i.e. at the start) and thus the spacebar always goes back to the start when I press play. No matter what I do I can't seem to get this yellow bar to open up again or extend towards the right of the screen?

Hi

It looks like you have zoomed out on the timeline such that the selected range start end points appear together.

Try clicking the double headed arrow, to the left of the zoom out (-) button, bottom right of the timeline pane to expand the range.
