Pause playback stopping on timeline and preview while dragging clip

Do any of you know how to edit the playback controls on movie edit? Every time I play and I click stop, the cursor goes back to where it first played back. But I want the cursor to stop where I tell it to and not have it go back, you know what I mean? How do I change that? I can't right click on the panels, I went to settings and couldn't find where to change the functionality of the pause button to stop on the timeline.

Another thing I was used to in Sony Vegas was when I drag the movie clip, the preview screen stays showing the clip where I move it as opposed to it being black so it makes it harder where I want to place the movie clip, in case I want to trim that part and put some transition. Any way to fix that too?

Hi,

First thing I'd try is to click the 'Optimize timeline view' icon, two outward facing arrows, bottom right of screen.

As regards your question on the cursor: if you use the Spacebar to start and stop playback, check the highlighted setting in this screenshot:

Yes, that helped out! And its not just the space bar that does it, clicking on the pause button on the playback also stops the curser in place of the timeline. Thank you for pointing that out! :D

That thing did nothing. What was it supposed to do?

It does exactly what it says it does - Optimize the timeline. Or for you, it makes everything that is on the timeline fit on the screen.

Watch my tutorials and read the manual.

I think @terrypin took it that you were having a common problem / glitch that occurs in MEP where by the playhead (cursor) starts jumping to the very start of the timeline after an edit. One method to stop this is to activate the "Optimise the timeline" command and then play, after which you can zoom back into the timeline and "normal service is resumed".

Your problem was just a program settings preference for the space bar start and stop behaviour.
