Panning not working

Eleyan wrote on 7/7/2023, 10:14 AM

I will need to go back to scratch to work out why, in the past up to a couple of months or so ago all of my recorded vocals were properly centred in the mix, but recently something changed, and now all the vocals are on the left side, left channel, I cannot get them to be panned to centre anymore. Tonight I had a go, and one take was Centrered, but the rest were on the left, it's incredibly frustrating. I want to know what I am doing wrong. It only became an issue around April/May 2023. I did reset all of the audio effects for the objects in question before the last try. Windows 11, Dell G7 i7. Listeners are commenting on soundcloud that the mix isn't right. Can't say it's ever been an issue for me until this year. I am using a PreSonus AUDIOBOX USB 96 for the microphone input in channel 1. If anyone uses the same unit, and think that's involved, let me know. A final note: I use the headphones throught the Audiobox unit to watch videos and listen to music on my pc and there is no such problem with that playback. Cheers.

@Eleyan

Hi,

When you recorded, in Music Maker recording settings, did you check the box for Mono? If you left it as Stereo, then you recorded onto the left channel as you indicated, not both. All panning does is decrease one of the channels.

Done.

Right-click your recording, Audio Effects, Stereo Processor and it should open in the Object Effects window. Turn on Stereo Enhancer and under Presets, select Mono, or Both Channels Left.

In the future, always open recording parameters before recording to make sure that you have everything set up for what you want, including the file name and location, etc.

Hi

. . . . now all the vocals are on the left side, left channel . . . .

Assuming you are using a stereo microphone, this would suggest the Audio recording setting is set to Mono - the left channel is the default for a mono mic.

@browj2

. . . . If you left it as Stereo, then you recorded onto the left channel as you indicated, not both . . . .

It is the other way round for me as seen below

Added:  my mic is mono wired to both L & R channels, setting the above option to Mono only records the left channel.

Hi John EB,

Not quite. Recording in Stereo with 1 mic plugged into the interface (left side) gives a stereo recording with sound only on the left channel. Recording in Mono puts the audio from that single mic on both left and right speakers. The waveform shows a single channel recording. A normal stereo recording will show the waveforms for both left and right channels, one below the other.

EDIT: Just saw your comment. I think that the OP does like I do. One mic plugged into the audio interface, left side, thus we don't get audio on both channels when recording in stereo.
