PAL to NTSC?

MAGIX Movie Edit Pro MX Plus Download Version
Version: 11.0.5.0 (UDC2)

I found an old version of Treasure Island with Jackie Cooper on ebay and would like to view it on my American TV.  Trouble is it's Region 2 (GB).  Granted it plays fine on the 'puter if I enable my DVD player to switch regions.  Not a problem either as I have a couple in the box waiting for one of their brothers to fail and jump in.  I can set one of the standbys to #2 and save the DVD to HD.

What I would like to do is burn a backup copy of the movie but in NTSC and no region.  DVD Shrink can remove the region business no prob.  But can Magix convert  the movie from PAL to NTSC and create an Image Recorder in DVD format, or do I need to convert the DVD on HD to something like M2TS or MPG 2?

I don't want to export it via Magix if this means a loss of quality.  Just want to convert it into an .mvp, edit the sound (seems Magix always attenuates the sound of anything it imports), and then transfer it to a new DVD that will play on my Blu-ray player.  Anybody have any ideas?

Hi,

You can bring the movie in to movie edit pro as pal, then export or burn it as NTSC with no problem at all as long as it does not have copy protection on it.

Thanks, George.  I neglected to mention that I would probably want to convert it from 4:3 to 16:9 as well.  Thankfully some time ago John taught me how to do that, and I finally found my notes I saved from his tutorial, so I should be good to go.

P.S.  Just wondering.  If I have the DVD saved to the HD as a bunch of .vobs, do I just point Magix to the containing folder and it just picks them all up into one single video/audio track the same as if it were one long m2ts (what I'm used to working with and capturing off the STB)?

Hello Arthur,

You should be able to drag the .VOB file directly into the timeline using the import tab.  You should also be able to play it before you import to make sure you got the right file.  I have ocassionaly had problems dragging .VOB file so I had to convert to MPEG, but that is rarely necessary.

Just a tip, don't export the final file at a higher resolution than the original as you will gain virtually nothing.

Thanks again, George.  I can happily report that Magix did a good thing here.

I have a copy of the Sydney 2000 Olympics Opening Ceremony DVD set.  It's of course in PAL format (and 4:3 also).

I managed to save one of the discs to this location:

 R:\Raw Videos A-J\Anthem Project\Anthem Raw Footage from DVD\VIDEO_TS

Here's a list of files in this VIDEO_TS folder:

VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB

If I direct Magix to there it goes as far as:  R:\Raw Videos A-J\Anthem Project, then has a blue folder icon in front of Anthem Raw Footage from DVD.

If I click on this folder it shows me:

Movie 01

Movie 02

Both of these are preceded by the orange icon that looks like a frame from a film, the same as when I import an m2ts, but in this case Magix is calling them Movie 01.vob and Movie 02.vob. when added to the timeline.

Apparently Magix is lumping the .vob files into two groups and just ignoring the menu stuff (which is fine).

Anyway, success.
