Overlaying clips that are transparent

story97 wrote on 10/30/2017, 2:41 PM

Hello,

I have a client I make videos for. I use Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premier for my work. He uses Video Pro X. I rendered some text shorts for him to overlay using RGB+Alpha so there is no background and only the text shows. But when he drags them over his existing clips they are not working as transparent so they show a black background.

Is there a relatively simple process I can point him to that will allow him to put these overlay messages over his videos?

Thanks, and sorry for such a beginner question, i'm just not familiar with this software, and he doesn't usually do this type of thing as he's not a motion graphics guy.

Thank you for any assistance

EDIT: i want to add something, from what I'm used to, I placed the transparent videos on top of my clips in the timeline in After Effects. But what I'm gathering by searching is that with Magix I need to put my transparent clips below the video it will overlay. is that correct?

Hi

VPX appears to no longer automatically apply Alpha when it is present, or the filename indicates it is to have Alpha applied to it.

Your client needs to apply either Chromakey Black or Alpha from the Effects tab, Video effects, Chromakey dialog shown below

If using alpha then the direction arrow, indicated in the image below, on the text object must be set correctly.

. . . with Magix I need to put my transparent clips below the video it will overlay. is that correct? . . .

That is correct - the layers are built up from track one upwards - as you go to higher track numbers the highest number used is on top and the subsequent layers below, in descending track number, with track one being the 'background'.

Note in Magix products the tracks are universal and can contain images, titles, video or audio, however the above statement only applies to visual objects, ie images, titles and video.

Audio is 'heard not seen' and does not interfere with ordering of visual objects, no matter which track number it is on.

Whilst the clip on 3 can be seen overlaying the primary track 1 clip in Video Pro X4 using Chromakey Black, it does not work in the latest Video Pro x 15.0.4.176 (UDP3).

Is this a fault in my own program or is this in all the latest VP x.

If so on either account how can I get it to overlay please.

Thanks

There is no issue here with VPX 15.0.4.176 and Chromakey black.

What happens if you use Chromakey Alpha and change the effects direction arrow?

Can you post one of the overlays that is showing this issue to somewhere like Dropbox for us to test please - do not post to Youtube, Vimeo or the forum we need the original file unchanged..

You're right. he placed it below the clip and it worked.

He's got it working. it's just foreign to me. I'm used to putting my videos in line with how i expect to see them. For instance. if a clip using Alpha is going to sit on top of a video as an end result, I have to place it above.

I wasn't aware other software did it differently. Once i saw this and tested the software the problem made sense and I've contacted him to try it that way as well. once I did so it worked fine.

It's not that one is doing it right and the other is wrong, it's just a different method.

At this point I don't want to use the other method as this works fine and is easier to explain.

Got it, and we're all good. Thank you for the assist!

Hi

@story97

Thanks for the feedback.

Getting used to different software's workflows can be a nightmare.

Using Alpha has a lot more going for it depending on the placement of the objects eg you can do this things like this with it

Here is the timeline with Alpha applied to the title object

Thank you for the help.

I have the avi I am using to overlay and a screenshot of the time line in VPro X.

Whether the arrow is up or down I get the same black result. Tried Black and Alpha every way I could.

Strange thing is it does work with Black in VPro x4 but also not in my Movie Edit 2017 Prem either.

Maybe this also has something to do with not being able to get rid of the black backgroundf behind my basic text titles. I cannot get them to be transparent yet in VP X4 they are.

Hi

Thanks for the overlay clip - here is what I get when applying Chromakey Black and Alpha using the same track order as you image - at least for the 2 examples in the video.

The second example is correct - if you had another image or text then you would get an effect similar to the Kangaroo Island one above where one image would appear in the other where the overlay creates the transparency.

It must be my program as I cannot get anything to go Black or Alpha up or down.

I haven't messed with any prefs but is there somewhere that it may have switched something off?

BTW I have put in a Ticket to support about the overlay and the title transparency

Hi,

Make sure that you have updated to the latest patch. What is the patch version number that you are using? See under Help, About.

In VPX (15.0.4.176), put the title on track 4 unless you want  the overlay stars to pass in front of the titles, and put produce.avi , on track 3. Give produce.avi chromakey black, not alpha.

Hi again,

Here is another trick. To get possibly a better result, copy the produce.avi down directly below where it was located (easier to see if you remove the audio track) so that you have it on tracks 3 and 5. Remove the chromakey from both copies. Select the one on track 3 and go to Effects, Color, and reduce saturation to -100. This will give you a black and white (with shades of grey) mask. Now give it chromakey Alpha (the arrow should be pointing down). You should now see the colors of produce.avi closer to those in the original, at least in my opinion.

Checked this again another way using MEP2018 Plus and I found that simply using a chromakey black on the overlay was better. When the musical notes show up, there is a cross-shaped white glow that can be seen in the simple version with chromakey black, but not in the second version that I showed with the black mask. Instead of Alpha, I tried chromakey Black on the mask and it worked better than alpha.

Yes I 've tried the Update button a few times but it says There are no updates for Magix Video Pro X. So I guess that's what it means.

Still trying what I can but still no transparency for a text title or overlay clip.

I got an email from support requesting more information.

I think I will install it on another computer and see if that has anything to do with it.

I checked and the extras that came with the program have not been installed yet, so we'll see if any of those created the problem.

I will install everything.

Yes the reinstall fixed the problem and it didn't change with all free extra's installed.

Not sure why that would happen, but must have been a corrupt file somewhere.

I did notice the Desktop icon shortcut changed from the Purple V to a white and orange timeline thingo.

Anyway all overlays and text titles work with transparency..

A happy camper !

Many thanks for the help guys. Now back to work.

PS: As I bought PowerDirector years ago and upgraded until 2016, I am using the amazing fx they have in VPX. by saving them as an avi in PD then inserting them in VPX.

I quite liked some of the quick ways to do things in PD however it was limited and I could never quite get my head around some of its ways. I got into Video editing with Ulead's Media Studio Pro when they first started and loved it's simplicity. I find VPX to be a bit like that, for me anyway.

Well that didn't last long !!

Checked to see if there were any updates and there were, so updated, twice.

Changes in version 15.0.3.154: Fixed error with automatic updates Changes in version 15.0.3.148:

The overlay still worked here.

There was still other updates so did this to the latest..

Changes in version 15.0.4.176:

But the overlay and transparency in the text title had gone and i was back to my original problem.. with this version.

Summary

With the primary on 1, the star overlay on 2 and the text title on 3.

I can see the title and the stars but not the primary in 1.

If I disable the overlay on 2 then I can see the primary and still the text title (altho' the title has the black rectangle background as before so it is not transparent)

Is there anyway to go back to previous version so at least I can get some work done?

EDIT: I have gone back to the download center and downloading VPx 8541 again.

How come the download version would not be the latest version?

I am uninstalling starting again.

I see many separate Magix programs a few of them Movie Edit 2017 which I also have and VPX.

I will only uninstall the non Movie Edit titles.

EDIT: Looks like it is removing 20 apps

Downloaded videoprox_dlm_8541 which is 15.0.0.56 so installed it. Overlay works.

Says updates available, so it downloaded 107MB and said it is ready for installation. Chose immediately.

It closed my open program then a panel came up..

The patch has already been installed. If you want to reinstall, click "Repair".

I had done this before but nothing happened. The program did not update, it was still 15.0.0.56.

I checked and it said an update was available just as it had before.

I am going bananas here !!

I noticed in my Win 10 /Documents/Magix downloads/Installation Manager 2 files..

1. Video_Pro_X8_DLV_en-US_160331_12-03_15_0_0_56

2. Video_Pro_X9_DLV_en-US_170918_13-13_15_0_4_176

I will uninstall and see if #2 above will do better as it is the later one.

Why isn't this is my Account as this is the one I bought!
