Output as Mono

I'm making an acting reel of a DVD, and will put clips online in You Tube, so only need mono.  I have a Win10 laptop, and used Handbrake 1.0.2 to convert it to an MP4 on my hard drive. The MP4 plays fine in Win Media Player, Quicktime and in Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0.  BUT, when I copy a segment in Vegas from the trimmer to the timeline I get audio popping. I see voice, music and SFX tracks in the timeline and am wondering if that is the problem. I've seen other posts that say combine them all into a mono track solves this.
So, when do I combine them and how?  When I convert the DVD in Handbrake, in the trimmer or the timeline, and how?  Thanks, Bill
Here's my software again: Win10 laptop, Handbrake 1.0.2, Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0.

Hi

. . . . . put clips online in You Tube, so only need mono . . .

Why do you need mono ? Youtube supports stereo and if the playback device is mono only then this is not a problem - the stereo will be mixed down to mono only on playback.

. . . . used Handbrake 1.0.2 to convert it to an MP4 on my hard drive . . .

This is adding an unnecessary step and is probably what is causing the audio issue.

Copy all the VOB files, except VTS_01_0.VOB, which is the menu video, directly from DVD to computer and change the file extension from VOB to MPG.

You can then import these directly into Vegas - there should be no audio popping.

I think you missed it. I don't care about stereo, since I'm posting them online, most of which supports mono only. What I need to know is what causes the popping when I move a clip from the trimmer to the timeline in Vegas and how to fix that. Thanks!

Hi

. . . . I think you missed it. . . . . What I need to know is what causes the popping . . . .

On the contrary I clearly understand what you are doing, however not why?

The issue is most likely caused by the conversion to mp4 using Handbrake - a step that is unnecessary as is the conversion to mono audio see below for reason why.

Try the solution I gave above using the VOB files from the disc as I have described, the popping should be eliminated.

You can then export from Vegas in mp4 format for upload to Youtube.

. . . . since I'm posting them online, most of which supports mono only . . . .

Video hosting websites do not care what format the audio is in, it is a function of encoding the video and has nothing to do with the websites hosting the video - all they require is that the video is in a standard format they support.

Likewise all media players available for web browsers whether on Windows, IOS, Android or any other operating system support playing stereo. The only time mono would be needed is, if like me, you cannot hear stereo sound - deaf in one ear.

Note:

  1. Youtube will recode the video you upload for the viewers depending on their Internet connection speed and this could be as low a resolution as 240p, this may also convert mono audio back to 2 channel stereo - both channels will be identical and the video download audio will be in stereo format.

  2. Using DVD resolution - 720 * 576 (PAL) or 720*480 (NTSC) pixels source material and upscaling to HD (1280*720) or Full HD (1920*1080) will give you video that is of poorer quality than true HD video - you can mitigate this to a partial extent by increasing the sharpness of the video in Vegas.

It plays FINE as an MP4 after Handbrake, and in the Vegas trimmer but not the timeline, or when I create a movie. How do I combine the 3 tracks to mono?

Meantime, I'll try your renaming VOB to MPG, thanks

I took your change VOB advice, this is the outcome...

I was on Jimmy Kimmel Live on January 11, 2016 Matt Damon and Jimmy josh each other, and they had me stand by for 2 years waiting to do this sketch. So, when Damon FINALLY won a Golden Globe at the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards, Jimmy wanted to josh him back, I play an older, fatter Matt Damon accepting the award.
