OT: YouTube not playing Hd?

terrypin wrote on 10/17/2015, 1:46 PM

Before I start changing the settings I've always used successfully in the past (basically MP4, 1920x1080, 25 fps) thought I'd check here.  Has anyone else found that YT is no longer playing videos uploaded at HD in HD quality? Nor offering the option in settings?

Edit: I should have added that I was using my PC browser, Firefox (latest). I've since just tried the same video from my iPad, which uses the Safari browser - and it's now playing in HD. So I suppose it's a Firefox issue? I'll post in the Fx forum.

Hi Terry,

Just to confirm, I ran your latest video on YT using Windows IE and it seems to be in HD.

Thanks both. Must have been a temporary glitch from YT. Over several hours yesterday (Sunday) it failed to play in HD. But today it did.

Only uploaded to YT by accident anyway. It was intended for Vimeo, my usual host whenever I've used music that might inadvertently still be copyright sensitive! It arose from a discussion in a walking forum, which briefly digressed onto the Thames Path. Three minute extract from my 100 minute family DVD spanning 2003-2007.

I've since had this reply from the Firefox Forum:

"Windows XP users may get served only WebM 360p in the HTML5 player on YouTube. If that is the issue, you may need to force Flash using an extension."

Prompted by that I thought I'd just check again - and the problem is back. I then tried it with View this page in IE and it was OK, supporting that diagnosis.

Leaving aside the puzzle over the apparent intermittency of the problem, I've installed the add on YouTube Flash Player - and the video is once more playing in HD.
