Opening old project vf files

Richard-Cofer wrote on 8/9/2021, 6:09 PM

I have Magix Movie Studio Edit Pro version 20.0.1.80 on Window 10 OS. I have an old project I created with Magix Movie Studio 15 that has the file extension vf. I tried opening the project with Movie Edit Pro and I get the error, File Format Cannot be Read. How can I import or open an old project into Movie Edit Pro so I can make some modifications?

@Richard-Cofer

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

There are no such products as Magix Movie Studio Edit Pro, nor Magix Movie Studio 15! There is Magix Movie Edit Pro, and Vegas Movie Studio 15.

From what you write it would appear that you have previously had Vegas Movie Studio 15, whose project files have a .vf extension. Such projects can only be opened in the Vegas Movie Studio range, not in Movie Edit Pro. Even the "new" Magix Movie Studio 18 cannot yet open .vf files from earlier versions of Vegas Movie Studio, though we are told that the developers are working to resolve this.

So, please clarify exactly which products you have and are asking about.

The software version that I used to create the project was VEGAS Movie Studio 15. In the current software, when I open the help screen and pick "About MAGIX Movie Edit Pro Premium" it indicates I have "MAGIX Movie Edit Pro Premium", Version 20.0.1.80. When I look at the receipt I received from MAGIX for the purchase of the software, it states I purchased MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2021 Premium. https://www.magix.com/us/video-editor/movie-edit-pro/

I think I may have upgraded to the wrong product line and should have purchased MAGIX Movie Studio 18. I probably would not have purchased MAGIX Movie Edit Pro if I can't import vf project files.

Hi Richard.

Try raising a ticket with Magix and explain you have mistakenly ordered the wrong software.

I did that once and was able to swap over paying the the difference in the program costs. Don't leave it too long though.

@CubeAce thanks for the advice, I submitted a ticket for the refund. Will see what happens.

@Richard-Cofer

Not sure you will be offered a refund but a swap of product to Magix Movie Studio 18 is more likely to be successful.

Either way, good luck.

Hi,

You may want to reconsider keeping with MEP. The only thing that Movie Studio 18 over MEP is that it has is a partial import of vf files and, presently, only rough cuts - no effects. Also, it looks like it is actually MEP2019, so you are ahead of the game with MEP2021 for new projects.

I suggest that you finish any open projects using Vegas Movie Studio, and start new ones in MEP.
