Hi Nathan.

Do you have the Windows HEVC codec on your PC? The program would need to use it to use the file.

Also and I'm not 100% sure about this but you may have to record in another file format. I think XAVC is an intra codec not supported by Movie Edit Pro. Even in Video Pro X it is an additional 'has to be paid for' codec. Even then, this is a new camera and the variation in the codec may not yet be supported.

Hi Nathan.

VLC player carries its own set of codecs that are not shared to other programs but you are correct. I just looked at the supported codecs for VPX. It does have a bracket around an additional 'C' as in XAV(C). I'm not sure if that is important.

If you wait for John EB to come on line he may be able to find something in the file data that I can't see as a problem or you can try to contact magix at infoservice@magix.net and give them the same information you have given here.

Thanks for the help I do appreciate it, I did also put in a support request. After some troubleshooting I was able to get a really dicey playback version by switching the video mode settings under program/ display options, but it plays for a second then immediately crashes. The audio is there, the video is there but super chopped up (like really bad/ unusable)

CubeAce wrote on 2/25/2021, 3:28 AM

@Nathan-Machan

Looking at the file specs it is a super heavy CPU hog. Sometimes a codec that looks good needs a lot of processing power to read. You may want to enable proxy files for a smoother playback. How have you set up the program settings?

Please ignore these settings are made in MEP rather than VPX. They are basically the same.

Hi Nathan.

Actually, looking at the file format specs it shouldn't be too bad as it is basically H264 but a version implemented by Sony. It is 4K video so as long as your monitor window within MEP is no more than a quarter of the screen it should play back fine depending on the system spec.

I have a beast of a computer so I dont think its that, Windows computer with:
- Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit
- AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core Processor
- 32677 MB RAM

How do you enable proxy files? Or were you suggesting I ignore that?

Hi Nathan.

I have gone back to look at your computer spec.

You may have to turn off any Hardware acceleration options for playback as your PC does not have an Intel GPU.

VPX and MEP both rely heavily on an Intel GPU for both playback and some rendering.

None of that worked but I must say you are much better helped than MAGIX support team who sent me one message in 72 hours and completely brushed me off. I am very disappointed after investing so much in this company over the years only to find when you actually need help they simply dont care. Their suggestion "turn off hardware acceleration and that "maybe" my graphics card isnt up to date even though I think a 2080ti is more than sufficient. I have a 5000 gaming PC so there is no reason why this shouldnt work, its gotta be some codec issue.

Hi Nathan. I'm sorry to hear that. They have always been quite good with my inquiries personally although mine have been about reactivation in the past and not so much about compatibility issues.

We do see many more compatibility issues raised by users of AMD based systems with this type of problem.

While the nvidia 2080ti is indeed well within specification it is the Intel GPU that does most of the hard work regarding HEVC using Intel's Quick sync technology so if you don't have one some functions are going to be done at the software level.

The only thing within your video file data I'm not sure about is the Chroma Subsampling string which is 4:2:2.

Whether that is producing a problem or not I can't tell. All my video files are 4:2:0.

Perhaps the best thing now would be to allow us to test a file on our machines. A short 10 second clip should do it. Either place it in a drop box account or to a google drive or similar.

Ray.

Hi

The XAVC(S) video file format is looks OK from the MediaInfo data.

Can you upload a short clip - about 10 secs long - from the camera to a file sharing site such as Dropbox and post a link to for us to test.

. . . . I think a 2080ti is more than sufficient. I have a 5000 gaming PC so there is no reason why this shouldnt work, its gotta be some codec issue. . . .

Have you installed the Windows HEVC codec - if not do so this is necessary and do a Restart of the PC.

You have a powerful gaming machine, the issue is - a fast gaming machine does not automatically mean it is also good/fast for video editing.

To clarify - many effects and several video export formats, (HEVC) excluded, Hardware Acceleration (HWA) requires an Intel processor with integrated GPU, eg UHD 630. Without HWA many effects are software encoded on the CPU which is slower irrespective of the processor core count.

The Magix comment . . . "maybe" my graphics card isnt up to date even though . . . . is valid.

If you are a gamer, then there is a conflict which means a compromise has to be made.

Either video editing performance is compromised due to the gaming drivers for the RTX 2080ti, or the gaming is compromised by using the Nvidia Studio drivers which are designed for video editing.

Good information thanks, The thing is I dont even game, but got the PC through a credit rewards program because many spoke highly of its video edit capabilities. So basically what you're saying is I probably need to edit this on a intel computer? I will try to get a short clip uploaded. As previously indicated I can play the files just fine on my PC on VLC player. I also have the windows codec installed so thats not the issue, the only thing I can think of is the intel issue.

CubeAce wrote on 2/26/2021, 1:35 PM

Hi Nathan.

Strictly speaking, not necessarily.

It depends on the Video editing program. I will quote what I said on another query.

The Magix video editors have seldom ever been in the top four for fastest render times but are possibly the most stable in use.

Most Video editors do make additional use of an Intel GPU including Adobe Premier, Edius, Pinnacle Studio and Filmora. Notable exceptions are DaVinci Resolve and Vegas.

Whether any of those are faster or easier in use I wouldn't want to say. It's always best to understand the programs requirements and use it to see if it fits your work flow. The Magix program for me ticks more boxes between pros and cons.

As I said earlier VLC has its own contained codec pack and playback is an entirely different experience and requirement specification to that of needing to edit.

Then there is still the requirement of the codec support.

Ray.

Hi

In addition to @CubeAce last comment, no 2 video projects are going to render at the same speed - as soon as you start adding effects, transitions, collages, titles etc, each of these is going to have a hit, sometimes very significant hit, on render times and where the rendering being done.

Collages and processor intensive effects such as noise reduction are examples where the export frame can be reduced to a crawl.

. . . .  I dont even game . . . .

I would recommend switching to the Studio drivers for the RTX 2080 - it will remove one 'unknown factor', how much difference you will see on real projects is at the mercy of the items I mentioned above.

. . . . because many spoke highly of its video edit capabilities . . .

Unfortunately recommendations are only useful if the recommender is using the same program.

. . . . I can play the files just fine on my PC on VLC player. . . . .

Please forget about what VLC or any other video player can do, it has no bearing on whether a video file can be imported into a video editor.

As @CubeAce has said - 'there is still the requirement of the codec support' I would add - with the program you are importing to.

The sample video clip will help a great deal in this case - thankyou.

The recording format you have used is normal MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 which VPX should be able to handle but you would need to supply a sample as requested.

What version number (as in Help> About VPX) of VPX are you using?
