Nudge track with Keyboard Shortcut?

rjkowalski wrote on 12/11/2014, 11:53 AM

I'm using Movie Edit Pro 2015 Plus and can't seem to find a keyboard shortcut for nudging a track left or right on the timeline.  The only answers I find relate to dragging the track left or right but that requires zooming in and you lose sight of the other tracks.  Is there a keyboard shortcut?

In my case, I've imported 4 tracks of footage (multicam)  and the "sync by audio" didn't work perfectly for one track so I need to nudge it.  I can do it by dragging but I'd like to step it by frames using the keyboard.

There are many other times during editing that I also wish I could nudge objects a bit without losing the ability to see all tracks on the screen.  I'm thinking I'm just overlooking this in the keyboard shortcut portion of the manual.

Thanks,

Rick

Hi,

Do you want to nudge a track as you say early in your query, or an object as you say later?

Sorry Terry....I should have been clearer.  I want to be able to nudge an object (not the entire track of objects).

Hi Rick,

Maybe Terry has found a way, but I couldn't find one, not even a poosibility to add a hot key to nudge an object.

In MEP, the smallest amount that you can move an audio file is 1 frame. In VPX6, you can move it less than a frame.

I always zoom in to frame level to move my audio by a frame or 2, then zoom back out.

A nudge command would be nice, but probably dangerous.

Thanks John.  I previously used Sony Vegas and you could nudge an event (object) using numbers on the keyboard.  It was much easier than trying to drag accurately and you could still see other tracks.  I wish I knew where to submit a feature request.

Hi Rick,

I can't find one either. I could make one with a macro script as I have done for several others that are mising from the (large) MEP repertoire. Although it would be complex and involve simulating mouse clicks. But wouldn't it be impractical? Presumably it would have to work consistently for any object on any track, whether or not it was
- isolated (with at least one frame of space on the side to which you wanted to move it)
- butted cleanly to the two adjacent objects
- or already part of a simple or complex transition

For say a single-frame, rightward movement of a selected object (which is how I assume you're defining a 'nudge') I would:

1. Shift+x to select next object and hence automatically move the timeline marker to the join point.
This assumes that you have Program settings > Playback > Spacebar stops at current playback position enabled, my preference. It also asumes there is an object immediately to the right of your target object, or overlapping it. Otherwise I would use Ctrl+0 to select the RH end of the object. (And repeat that if necessary, due to other objects at intermediate positions on lower tracks.)

2. Ctrl+1 to zoom in to single frame view.

3. Drag the target object one frame to the right.

(Faster to do than describe!)

I would think it a bit risky to move objects in a complex (multi-track) project without being zoomed in like that. And unless it was a rare 3-key hotkey you might conceivably end up with objects inadvertently moved.

Hi

Not a KB shortcut but this is one of the functions of the "Object Trimmer" (Shift+N) > Moves the object. Click the arrows at the right and left in the spin box above the transport controls (below the pink polygon) and the selected object will move in single frame increments. Be aware of course the effect this is having on objects either side. If there is material beyond the cut in the object on the left it will extend the left object. If not it will create a gap.

Peter
