Not getting any sound levels from my DJ hardware (XDJ-XZ) input.

Hi, after scanning lots of posts about not getting any audio input on Sound forge, i have no no luck.

I have a Pioneer XDJ-RX, and want to record via Sound forge instead of the built in recording from the unit itself, as it has had issues of glitches etc. My unit is connected to my PC via a USB-B to USB-A (printer lead type). I am not getting any audio signal to my PC (although via Rekordbox software on the same PC i get signal) it seems, and I'm lost on what to do next. So any help would be hugely appreciated. I am not very tech-savvy, but have tried what i can via other forums/posts with no luck. I have tried in Sound forge, options> preferences> Audio> and in the record option I've tried all possible options, which are:

XDJ-XZ-ASIO driver
Microsoft sound mapper
Direct sound sound mapper
Windows classic wave driver

On my PC i have tried a few different audio settings, neither of those have worked. I have selected (line in XDJ-Z) as my input source. I have tried the Realtek HD audio option too, but i think that's only for 3.5mm jack input (i could be wrong).

I'm running:

Sound forge pro 13 (build 135)

Windows 10 Pro.

Processor: AMD A8-9600 RADEON R7, 10 COMPUTE CORES 4C+6G  3.10 GHz

Hardware is XDJ-XZ with all latest drivers & firmware etc installed.

I have tried my best to include all the information i can, as per the sticky notes guide on here. I hope this is all the information you need, if not please let me know any i can add.

Any help getting this issue resolved would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

@kevin-m3692 Definitely select the XDJ-XZ-ASIO driver. Don't forget to apply the changes after switching the driver. Then you can open the ASIO driver settings. There you should be able to set your input and output. You probably will not have playback via your computer speakers with the ASIO driver selected, but instead need to connect speakers/headphones to your DJ hardware.

Thank you for your reply. I definitely did click apply every time I've changed settings. My ASIO settings don't let me pick any input or output, it just lets me change buffer latency. This is a new DJ setup I have, but my last Pioneer setup had a DJM-850 & the ASIO settings did give me those options you talked about, so I don't know what I can do if those options don't show 🤔

@kevin-m3692 After applying your ASIO driver in the preferences, which options are now available in the record and playback tab? Can you select the input and output of your DJ hardware?

Is the USB device selected as the default 'Record' device in Windows sound settings?
Back in Sound Forge, try Windows Classic Wave driver, using that driver, the USB device should be listed by name and you should be able to monitor right on the PC. Though you should be able to record using the ASIO driver, ASIO is not always needed if you are not overdubbing (old-school term).

btw, welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users community @kevin-m3692.

@SP. There is then a list in playback saying...

Channel 1 - XDJ-XZ OUT 1

Channel 2 - XDJ-XZ OUT 2

Channel 3 - XDJ-XZ OUT 2

The same right up until channel 32

As for the record section it does similar, but instead says line in beside each channel number. This part is confusing for me as I don't know how there can be that amount of channels.

As for my hardware the only options output wise is: Master, or master & booth together.

Thank you.

@rraud yes it is selected as the default record. And yes when I select Windows classic wave driver it shows my channels in the the playback options as

Channel 1 - line (XDJ-XZ) - left

Channel 2 - line (XDJ-XZ) - right

Channel 3 - LG TV (AMD high definition left)

Channel 4 - LG TV (AMD high definition right)

I'm baffled by this, because the equipment is showing up, but I'm getting no signals through to the sound forge app, but I get signal via Rekordbox software once I test it out. I tend to close Rekordbox when doing all this testing just to make sure it's not interfering with any settings, it's a stand alone controller so doesn't need connected.

Yea my recording is me playing & mixing together individual tracks, so no dubbing at all.

Thank you, both of you trying to help me is appreciated so much 🙏

@rraud since I've put the settings you suggested (Windows classic wave driver) when I click record I get an error message saying: "an error occurred while recording. A device is not available" then when I click ok on that popup I get another message saying "one or more audio playback devices do not support the current sample rate and/or bit-depth. A device is not available"

Not sure if this information suggests anything, but just thought I'd let you know, as it may help you pinpoint a possible issue.

@kevin-m3692 You can change the sample rate and bit depth of your file at the bottom right corner of the Sound Forge window. Standard sample rates are 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz. Standard bit depths are 16 bit or 24 bit.

kevin-m3692 wrote on 11/14/2023, 4:45 PM

I will try this tomorrow, I am clueless when it comes to sample rates & what they should be etc, so thanks for the suggestion. I know my bit depth was set to 32 bit & sample rate was 44100 Hz. So I will try changing both to those you suggested & see how I get on. I will let you know tomorrow. Thank you.

@SP. I tried changing the sample rate to 48,000 & bit depth to 16, then tried bit depth at 24 & any of those combinations don't work, I get the error message saying

"one or more audio playback devices do not support the current sample rate and/or bit-depth. An unsupported media type was requested"

When I change the sample rate back to 44,100 & try it with both the 16 & 24 bit depth, it records but still has no signal coming through. Basically the same thing as I was getting before I posted on here, so no luck with any of those suggestions. It's a strange one, my last setup had no bother with anything like this, and with that setup my ASIO settings let me chose input & output.
