No transition icon at object end, and no fade out on adjacent one

Basel-Shishani wrote on 6/18/2021, 12:14 PM

Greetings:

I just want to do a basic fade-out fade-in on adjacent objects. I don't understand what's happening, but sometimes I get the transition icons on both sides and both fades are available, at other points the icon is missing at the end and at the start of the next object I get no fade-in, but rather get 'fade through black' that causes the objects to overlap, which is something I don't want to happen.

So here's a good point where I'm seeing the icons. I can get a fade-out fade-in for the two adjacent objects (without them forced to overlap):

And here's a bad point, where there's no transition icon showing for the first object, so I can't do a transition on it. Further, the second object (track 2) does not offer fade-in, rather it offers 'fade through black' which cause the objects to overlap, (and that's not what I want because I have chroma backgrounds on some of the objects but not others, and overlaps mess things up):

This is the menu I get from the icon of the second object where there's 'fade htrough black' only:

Can someone please explain why I'm not getting the icons at some points, and how to do this basic operation.

Hi Basel.

Each track has to be a certain size in both height and width before the icons show up. Just enlarge the tracks in both dimensions. Sometime when the tracks are butt joined together they can be difficult to get at. You may also not want each adjacent track to be linked to each other. All those clips seem to be highlighted at once.

Also make sure your mouse is in single object mode.

I don't see these factors having any effect. True when an object is too compressed the icons disappear, but I enlarged and extended the objects to the max and still the icons don't show. Plus the issue of the fade-in being replaced with 'fade through black'. So this is a different kind of problem.

The objects are not linked, I just selected them together for the screen capture because you can't get the icon without a selection. (And the mode is single object).

Hi,

The icons are for transitions, not fades. Use the handles for fades.

See my tutorial on Fades and Transitions Part 1.

All I can say is I have no trouble fading in or out any butt joined clip but if there is no video above, the track is only going to show black. That is how it works. What else do you expect to see?

@browj2 My confusion was about the icons not appearing. But your tutorials explains things well. Thanks.

@CubeAce Sorry it was a confusion. I though the fade effect can be gotten by the icon menu options without the need to fiddle with the handles.

It can be gotten through the menu if the handle is moved on a second object and the icon appears on a first object, then the 'fade out' option is shown on the first and causes the handle to move automatically (Not sure the wisdom behind all this). I though that such behaviour (creating a fade through the menu of the icon) should be available at all times.

In other words: I was assuming this scenario: the fade transition duration is set as a default setting, then I click on a transition icon that's always on the object, then I choose the fade transition that's always there. So two clicks rather than fiddling with the handle and entering a duration. But that's not how the software works.
