No sound recorded with Video Grabber

Peter-vanDeursen wrote on 12/2/2020, 6:20 AM

Hi,

I bought the "Rescue Your Videotapes" box the previous week, so it is the latest version I assume.

I connected the MAGIX video grabber with S-Video and it is recording the video perfectly. But ... no sound :-(

The "advanced" audio setting is referring to the Video converter, and the camera to which it is connected is giving the sound but the video converter does not record the sound. I only see the video. The audio indicator does not indicate volume, it is grey.

I tried all the possible configurations in the advanced audio settings, but no sound with the video. In most cases the volume indication stays grey.

If I choose the mic of my headset and when I speak, I see the volume indication going green, but that is not what I am looking for.

Did somebody have the same experience or knows the solution to this ?

Please respond, as the product is now useless to me with no sound recorded.

Thanks !

@Peter-vanDeursenHi

. . . . the camera to which it is connected is giving the sound but the video converter does not record the sound . . . .

Do you mean you can hear the sound on the computer when playing the camera through the the converter to the computer?

If not - what type of cable is being used:-

  1. a 3 ring and tip 3.5mm jack plug on one end and a S-video connector on the other along with two RCA (cinch) connectors (Red and White) for audio, and are all 3 plugs at the converter end connected to it

    or
  2. 2 separate cables - one for the S-Video connections, and another for the audio, connecting the audio out of the camera to the USB converter?

Hi John,

Many thanks for taking the time to look into my issue !

I cannot hear the sound via the computer, the sound is coming from the camera.

The camera and the video grabber connection have the same s video input/output (both male/female).
So I bought a cable that has also two same opposite connections (both male/female) to be able to connect the 2 same s video connections of the camera and the grabber.

I ones had another video grabber using the same and that worked fine the same way as I have it connected now. I have recordings with both video and audio.

Maybe something happened on the computer in the meantime ?

Thanks in Advance !

Hi Peter.

You said.

I tried all the possible configurations in the advanced audio settings, but no sound with the video. In most cases the volume indication stays grey.

But then said

If I choose the mic of my headset and when I speak, I see the volume indication going green, but that is not what I am looking for.

So sound is getting to the program but at present only from your mic input.

In Windows Settings under Sound, Do you have this setup?

Stereo Mix has to be enabled in Windows 10 to get line inputs to work on some setups. It is off by default in Win 10. Make sure it is active and shows a volume in the Mic

Some Windows 10 updates resets the Stereo mix to the off position.

Then try again.

S-video connections carry no audio signal. As @johnebaker wrote above, if you are using a "pure" S-video cable you also need a separate audio cable to connect the audio output of your camera to the audio input of your computer.

Or have I completely misunderstood what is happening??

Hi,

Thanks a lot, with all the comments I was now able to get it working.

Indeed S-video is only for the video and I need to have a separate cable 3.5 to RCA for the audio.

That all connected to the video grabber results in video and audio.

The only challenge left now is that I have a noise in the audio which I think is coming from the noise the computer is making.

Thanks a lot everybody for the support !

Hi

. . . . The only challenge left now is that I have a noise in the audio which I think is coming from the noise the computer is making. . . . .

If you are using a laptop then this may be a potential cause - they tend to be noisier than PCs - see item 2 and 3 below, however I would not rule out:

  1. the camera, especially if the audio out is also a headphone socket

  2. the audio cable connecting the camera to the converter - if it is not a good quality one the shielding may be poor which leads to -.

  3. the environment - a cable may be acting as an aerial/antenna picking any electrical noise in the surrounding environment eg fluorescent, and some LED, lights and other electrical equipment.

Hi Peter.

To add to John's comments on additional electrical interference.

A big one is your mobile phone which constantly send out signals when not in use. Even when things are well shielded. That does sound very 'Digital' almost Morse code sound whereas main hum is a constant frequency. Signal can also be induced within the mains if running on the mains power supply and spikes or clicks can be caused by heavy duty mains being switched in from pumps from central heating of hot water systems or freezers / fridges / washing machines and should ideally be plugged into a different loop of the ring mains.Years ago it was not uncommon to see rf chokes fitted to the end of a mouse lead or video cable. Not so common now.

If you only get the noise when running off of the mains it could point to a problem with the mains charger or the socket it is connected to could be sharing the mains loop with another noisy bit of equipment from the list above.

I also a long time ago got the local Taxi firms' radios come through my Hi-Fi as they went by.

The list seems almost endless but can normally be tracked down bit by bit.

Good luck.

Ray.
