No sound on .m2ts nor .m2v videos

MME007 wrote on 1/22/2022, 2:02 PM

Hi,

Using Magix Video Pro X v15.05.213(UDP3) I don't have any sound on any of my .m2TS nor .m2v videos.

All my master videos are this formats like most of the videos I did create... It's a disaster for me!

The program was reinstalled about a year ago after a HDD crash on a new Windows 10 installation.

The MPEG-4 codec has been installed and the program is using "Mainconcept".

I didn't use this program since I reinstalled it, but now I need to produce a new video and it doesn't work...

Hope you can help me,

Regards,

Marc

I just realized that .mp3 also don't work but .wav well !

I recently made a video with sound tracks based on .wav audio I all was fine.

I have installed Magix Music Maker some times ago, could this create the issue?

Thanks

Hi

. . . . . Video Pro X v15.05.213. . . . I don't have any sound on any of my .m2TS nor .m2v videos . . . . program was reinstalled about a year ago . . . . I didn't use this program since I reinstalled it . . .  .mp3 also don't work . . . .

This suggest that the issue was caused by the new Windows 10 install.

Assuming that the .mts and .m2v video files audio is Dolby Surround Sound then, due to licensing issues with Dolby which have affected many other video editors as well,

VPX 9 on re-install would no longer have the capability to decode surround sound, older version of VPX and Movie Edit Pro were affected by the licensing issues for Surround sound.

The current version of VPX can decode surround sound, however support for exporting/encoding surround sound.is not available.

The mp3 issue is most likely due to the re-install of Windows 10 did not include Windows Media Player 12 which is necessary for mp3 support - to install WMP -

  • Open Windows Settings.
  • Select Apps.
  • In the Apps & features. pane select the Programs and features link top right of pane.
  • Select Turn windows features on or off
  • Scroll down to the Media features section and click the + to expand it
  • Select Windows Media Player
  • Select OK and install WMP.

Thanks John,

WMP was already active, so no prgress on MP3.

Maybe a confusion on my post: I don't have any sound in Video X PRO as I import my videos. I didn't try any export...

The only exception is when I import an audio file under the .wav format, recorded on Tascam DR40 recorder. In that case all looks fine.

Other ideas?

Marc

Hi Marc

. . . . Maybe a confusion on my post: I don't have any sound in Video X PRO as I import my videos. I didn't try any export.. . . .

No confusion on your part or mine - please read through my post again the majority of which relates to de-coding which occurs on import.

The mention of encoding, which occurs when exporting, is an extra comment to clarify the position if you were also wanting to export as Dolby Surround Sound.

The MP3 export looks like it is a bug.

Hi.

MP3 export is a bug and I reported it a long time ago. It has nothing to do with Windows updates or missing programs within Windows as MP3 exporting is still functioning in VPX 11.

Hi Marc.

I have no idea. Sorry.

I have Movie Edit Pro 2022 which seems to share the same bugs as VPX 13 but my copy of VPX 11 Still allows for me to export projects in formats MEP doesn't like MP3 or QuickTime Pro res mov. which I can watch in higher quality on one of my TVs.

I don't think we need to be discussing exporting.

@MME007 If time is of the essence but you don't want to rush into doing something premature purchase-wise, there may be ways of losslessly converting your movie clips to a more compatible audio codec. If you could post a smallish file (up to 2gb) onto Google Drive for us to have a "look" at that would help a lot. Make sure you set the Google Drive link to "Anybody with the link".

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al.

Don't M2TS files use MPEG-2?

There are no problems importing mp3 files to play within MEP 2022 (which Marc is complaining about) unless there is a separate issue with VPX 13 or he is referring to exporting.

Thanks for your useful comments. I’ll answer your requests as I’ll be at home this evening. I’ll also double check mp3 with other filles than the one I took. My main concern is about m2ts and m2v files.

Thanks

MME007 wrote on 1/25/2022, 2:12 PM

Thanks all,

I further checked mp3 with other files and it works. So mp3 is not a general issue but a specific file issue. Just bad luck that I took this file that is nevertheless played with all other programs... Mp3 is no more a concern.

After checking deeper .m2v files into details it is also not a concern since I did forget that those files do you embed audio that is on separated files in .wav format, one per channel. (3 files for a single video isn't easy to handle... Those are from my former camera.)

That said, my big concern is about all my .m2ts files, that I have plenty of from the last 10 years, mainly from the following sources:

- Sony SLT77 and SLT99 cameras

- Magix Video Deluxe (several versions) and Video Pro X (I'm not a new client...)

Produced with Sony SLT77 or SLT99 cameras .m2ts

I hope this clarifies the situation.

Both are Ac-3 codec "Dolby Digital". What should I do? It's ok for me to encode new videos in another format, but I'd like at least being able to import those videos and edit all the videos I still need to produce...

I'd like to further use Magix Pro X for that.

Any way to do so?
Would an update of my program for sure solve the issue?
Would Video Deluxe Premium 2022 do the job?

Regards,

Marc

Hi

. . . . Both are Ac-3 codec "Dolby Digital". What should I do? It's ok for me to encode new videos in another format, but I'd like at least being able to import those videos and edit all the videos I still need to produce . . . .

Dolby AC 3 is the 'base encoder' for Dolby surround Sound the only difference is the video audio is stereo, the options available are as I mentioned in my first post - conversion or upgrade, VPX 13 and MEP 2022 can import AC-3 encoded audio.

For the M2V files - these are video only files they should have no audio present even though they are encoded using MPEG-2 compression.

Hi Marc.

Yes. MEP (Movie Edit Pro) is what Video Deluxe is known as outside of Europe.

There are no problems importing mp3 files to play within MEP 2022 (which Marc is complaining about)

Ray, try this one:

@MME007

Marc, if you come across an MP3 that won't load (such as the one I linked to above), you can use VLC Player or Audacity to re-save it into a "better" MP3 that MEP will accept. A sample rate of 44.1 or 48khz are good values for MEP.

Hi Al.

No it is not playing, due to the non standard 8bit 8Khz LAME 3 (CBR, VBR and ABR compressed).mono produced nature of the mp3 file.

Although it imports, the time stamp is misread and is identified as mono 16 bit file at 24kHz..

LAME does not follow the standard Fraunhofer recognized format for mp3 encoding which is why Windows also doesn't support the files natively.

Hi Alwyn

To add to Rays comment

Adding the original file in MEP 2022 detects as a samplerate of 24000 kHz and does not play

As soon as a track contains audio at a higher samplerate the original file gets shortened as you can see below, the converted file plays OK.

I was just pointing out that the statement that MEP opens MP3s isn't necessarily correct. There are MP3s that MEP can't open natively, as I suspect Marc has found.

In the dim dark past when I was trying to convert such a file, Magix Music Editor ???? 3? that came with MEP could open them happily and I used that to convert them.

Both the converted files (using VLC and Audacity) used the LAME encoder and the files open both in MEP and Windows Media Player, so I don't understand what you mean by not supported by Windows natively, Ray. WMP will even open and play my original dodgy file.

MEP is the oddity here, which is surprising given it's poor, free cousin, ME3 could open it.

Hi Al.

I mean that the default video payer in Windows 10 is Film and TV, not Windows Media Player. You are correct, the file plays correctly in Windows Media Player, and in Groove Music. It seems that in Windows 10 it was the intention of Microsoft to split which player would cope with which formats.

Groove music even picks up on the embedded data. I think MEP and VPX use the default set of codecs from the Film and TV player rather than in the earlier releases of MEP which used Windows Media Player when it was the Windows default player. The lowest supported sampling rate in Film and TV seems to be around 11kHz. The same as MEP and VPX. It's possible to manually type in a lower sample rate within MEP and VPX but it still doesn't work.

ME3 is still the player supplied in MEP and it was that audio editor where I got the information on how it was being read from within MEP.

Now Groove Music as I understand it will shortly be replaced in Windows 11 by a new version of Windows Media Player. Old copies of Windows Media Player in Win 11 will be replaced in an update. Not long after, the same rollout will occur in a Win 10 update.

What formats or sample rates will then be supported I have no idea.

Ray.

Hi,

Following your HDD crash, you have lost free activated DLLs to decode and even encode AC-3 stereo or Dolby Digital audio streams of your .M2TS files.

Reinstalling VPX 9 version 15.05.213 does not allow activate the audio pack needed for AC-3 again because MAGIX has disabled the download for older versions of MEP and VPX.

To be able to decode audio of your .M2TS files you must have a specific DLL in the C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Video Pro X\9\RegModule_x64 folder

Ditto for MP3 playback.

Can you check if the following DLLs are present under C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Video Pro X\9\RegModule_x64?
mx_dec_dd_audio_sse_x64.dll
mx_mp3_reader_x64.dll

Thanks Dédé,

Both are present since I found your post on the French site... This didn't help.
This with one remark that can be important: it is Video Pro X\8 instead of \9

Could this reveal an installation problem?
