Greetings,

This morning I thought I'd play a bit more with this file and now MS2024 won't even load the video with an "unknow" error has occured". The computer was turned off overnight and I've not (knowingly) changed any settings or installed anything.

Other MOVs I have, and indeed everything else, seem to load OK.

Hi Andy.

Try re-downloading the file if it is still available and see if that one plays.

If it does then the program you used to hear the file did something to the original.

@CubeAce

Greetings Ray

Thanks fot the reply but I've tried that and I've reset MS2024 - still "error" on loading. I don't want to reinstall MS2024 because I don't have an iPhone or anything Apple so I'll never use Prores or the new version I've read about.

It's just that I can't understand why the video loaded yesterday, I turned the computer off last night, I turned it on this morning and the video doesn't load.

I suspect something somewhere has somehow corrupted/changed/been deleted/overwritten but until it affects what i usually do it's going to have to remain a mystery.

I think I've worked it out in my case.

I uninstalled Solveig Splitter (a video editor for "splitting" files, IOW editing them losslessly like VideoRedo does/did).

I then rebooted, and reloaded the MVP that had skoon's file in it. It opened OK and I could play the audio.

I then imported a ProRes+AAC file I had made with Mercalli v6 SAL. The video imported OK but there is no audio track.

So it seems Solveig loaded an audio decoder onto my system that allows me to open those ProRes audio tracks.

Interestingly, when I could import skoon's MOV, no HO or HDP files were created, but I still got a waveform showing on the timeline.

It also appears that once a file has been imported successfully, even if you uninstall the program that had the audio codec for that file, you can still open the original ProRes but not new ones.

Edit: Confirmed. I reinstalled Solveig and MMS2024 was able to decode the AAC audio in the ProRes file.

Thanks for replying. Out of curiosity are you able to try this workaround while using the original pro res file i uploaded for testing to see if it works with both audio/video.

Also, are you using the paid version or trial version of Solveig splitter? I looked at the site it appears the trial version did not support 4k? Please advise if you are able to download the original prores file above and update us if it works with your MMS. Thank you.

Hi Andy.

Well I think I know why I can play the file.

It's because my my DAWs can play the video and audio so I'm assuming for now the the codec is being shared.

I can also use a lot of the DAWs audio plugins in VPX and MEP.

Has anyone else got a DAW they could try?

Hi

. . . . Not sure why 1 drive link was not working . . . .

One drive link is adding an authentication key, as shown below, to the end of the URL as shown, however this, AFAICS, only allows you to view the file in the player, which fails to play the video and blocks the download using the Download link because it is not a browser player supported format.

........16F929538EE91DB4!17503&authkey=!some random letters-numbers=video&e=short random sequence

Using the URL with the bold/italics part deleted, a different format page is brought up which does allow the video file to be downloaded.

When sharing a file on OneDrive, I find it better to create a folder to put the file in and then share the folder as seen below:

Yes, as I commented back at the start, I have no problems opening your BPJH5550.MOV file when I have Solveig installed.

are you using the paid version or trial version of Solveig splitter? I looked at the site it appears the trial version did not support 4k?

I hadn't even opened Solveig. I doubt whether the version is relevant; the critical issue is that it seems to install the required codec to open the audio side of your file.

Please advise if you are able to download the original prores file above and update us if it works with your MMS. Thank you.

See my answer above.

I suggest you just install Solveig and see if it works (opt for the free version if it is prompted after the trial concludes).

If providing further samples, would you mind making them a bit smaller. 2GB is overly large for downloading.

@CubeAce

Ray, you're confusing wrappers and codecs. The MOV wrapper (or more correctly, container or format) is not the issue. The issue is the particular codec needed.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Wow! So I was a bit hesitant about installing Soveig Splitter with the recommendation by @AAProds but was later amazed it actually did the trick. The ProRes files from Apple played flawless with audio now. Prior to this all the ProRes files was unable to play without sound. Thanks to all, especially @AAProds for discovering this workaround. Like you stated above, I am certain that somewhow the files installed by Soveig Splitter bypassed or enabled the Prores files to play on MMS Prores audio. Just to confirm I downloaded the free version of Soveig Splitter and that program installed the necessary files to bypass and enable audio on the apple Prores files to played on MMS. Hopefully in the future MMS will be able to write the files to be enabled with Prores so we would not have to use other 3rd party software to use such as this. Thanks to all for your comments. If you have apple with prores and are facing something similar to this, the free Soveig Splitter program was an easy fix.

Hi.

ProRes is native Apple. There are no problems processing such files on Macs. If you ever come across or try to use a ProRes file that is 4:4:4 rather than 4:2:2 then all bets are off as to whether you could process that on a Windows machine unless that download can also help process such files. One thing I noticed was some of the plugins don't work properly with that file on my machine. Notably the Mercalli Pro plugin.

Hi Ray, Al

. . . .ProRes file that is 4:4:4 rather than 4:2:2 then all bets are off . . . .

MMS 2024 does import Prores 4:4:4 - it also respects the Alpha channel, does not import the PCM audio though.

No added codecs, system as for previous testing, only QT is installed.

John, having to install (no longer supported) QT is a hack. I don't consider installing Solveig as any more of a hack hack to get PCM audio working too, which it does.

In any case, your scenario is back at square one - no audio from ProPres imports - is it not?

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Ray, have a crack at this ProRes444 file then. No issues opening it in MMS2024 on my system.

@AAProds Hi, that file plays well on my MMS 2024, it even plays smoothly no stuttering, unlike my other .mov's.

Hi Al

That is true, add in a your 'hack' to the QT 'hack' and we should be there for all Prores formats with audio.

That is of course until the old timer QT is 'retired', and some DRM thrown in to the Prores format so that only approved software can open the format.

@Former user

Hi Gid

There must be a codec, from some software, on your system allowing MMS to import with 'no extras', at first I thought it might have been VP however, I too have VP installed and could not import the audio. I have not tried Al's 'hack'.

Ray.

For iphone camera users that are trying to import Prores files on to MMS. I am certain Apple removed 4444 files and are using only prores 442 files. The black magic application also only displays 442 prores files. They used to have 4444 prores files on iphone and now they are gone in the settings from what i can tell.

Gid, it would be interesting to see what is on your machine, codecs-wise. The report I posted earlier was created with this program:

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html

If you wouldn't mind, could you run it (it doesn't install) and post the report? I'll compare it with mine; see if there is a common codec set that is allowing opening of these ProPres files.
