@sksoon

Is it possible a codec issue?

Yes, it is possible but first, can you check what is the Audio Sampling Rate of one of your .mov files? Movie Studio will almost certainly expect this to be 48kHz and if your files are not recorded at this rate, this could cause the issue you are seeing.

If that is the problem, try and ensure all future files use that sample rate.

For existing files you should be able to use something like the free Handbrake to convert the audio sample rate.

If that is not the problem or solution, please follow this tutorial to analyse one of your files and post here the results of the Text View.

Can you confirm that you can see the video of your files in MMS 2023, but hear nothing?

Yes, I am able to visually observe the video file in MMS 23, however there is no audio at all in the video. If I play the file using another media player I am able to play the video and hear the audio. In MMS 23 I am missing the audio. I checked the audio and confirmed it was at 48khz. Below is what I got from analyse: Please advise if there is any solution. thanks.

Hi.

Have you checked the audio mixer to make sure the track is not muted or volume slider pulled down?

The audio data does not look that unusual to me.

Hi

. . . . In MMS 23 I am missing the audio. . . .

Are you saying there is no audio track visible in MMS 2023?

When you select the video clip on the timeline and press Ctrl + H does the audio track appear on the track below the video portion?

If not then check in the program settings Video/Audio tab that the Import video with sound audio option is checked.

Yes audio mixer is turned on and not muted. The video/audio tab option is checked and on in the program settings. There appears to be some error in the apple pro res video mov files when I try to import them I have no audio. If I shoot use h265 or h264 files than the audio files will appear and work fine in Movie studio. However, like stated earlier when I try to use Prores files than no audio will appear. Frustrating.

Yes, I do have the current version of quicktime installed.

After more testing with different codecs, I came to the conclusion that my MS will not play any version of PRORES files, but when i switch to h264 or h265 the audio will work. Not sure, but it appears my MS will not play audio on any prores file. I guess i should of asked this earlier, but does MMS23 support prores files? Visually I can see the file however the audio will not play.

Hi.

Normally at this point we would ask if you could make a video clip available for us to test and verify. Any appropriate clip put on to Google drive available for download would do. It could be the program cannot play ProRes files as Mov and ProRes are predominantly an Apple based wrapper and apple does not want its files to be Microsoft compatible. Sometimes though it is a hardware problem or an additional wrapper is needed. Normally it is the other way around with the sound being present but the video missing and at present I can't see a reason for the audio not to play. The aac codec used seems pretty standard.

Hi

Can you could make a video clip available for us to test and verify - about 15 - 30 secs long and with audio recorded in it. Upload to somewhere like Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox and share the file f'or anyone with the link' and post the link in a comment please.

Testing with MMS 2024, the Prores files I do have, have PCM encoded audio which definitely does not import with QT installed, your video has AAC encoded audio which should import.

Hi Gid.

The list of ProRes file formats increases almost monthly and like camera raw, now tend to be camera specific. Only Final Cut keeps up with those changes as Apple supply the wrappers. Apple wants to keep a closed shop and do anything they can to keep it that way. I'm not even sure DaVinci Resolve for Windows can cope while the Mac version probably could. This is why a sample video would really help to see if in this instance it can be done or there is a workaround.

There is a disclaimer on the Apple website about using third part software for editing ProRes files.

I hope the EU also tackle this as they have other aspects of Apple practices.

Ray.

Hi Gid

I also checked the full set of Prores video test files I have and none of them would import into Vegas 19 - no video, no audio.

To double check, I used Vegas Pro 19 to create new test files Prores 422, PCM encoded audio - no AAC audio encoding option, AFAICS to match @sksoon's video file is AAC encoded.

If it is hidden where is it? 🙏

The new PCM encoded test files do not import the audio portion only the video with MMS 2024, in VP19 they import fine.

Below is the link to the prores file in my onedrive. I do agree that it is possible Apple coded these prores files to not work properly with 3rd party software such as MMS. That is very unfortunate, however I am still able to use the video visual files just that the files do not contain any audio. Thanks to everyone who responded, and lets hope in the future there is workaround this issue so we can use Prores files with audio.

@sksoon

Hi.

Currently I'm getting a download error telling me to try later. I will try in the morning.

That is unusual. Please make sure you have enabled the file to be more than just viewed.

I agree. I hate enclosed systems and for that reason hate most proprietary codecs or wrappers. It's bad enough with camera raw files.

I can open that file (2GB) with MMS 2024 with no issues. I could have something on my system that allows that though.

The audio level is very low:

I think the Apple conspiracy theories need to be wound back. Apple isn't forcing itself on anybody, and let's face it, Magix has always been a shambles WRT file compatibility.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thanks for the response. Thats what i wanted to hear. Now i know if there is a will there is a way. Yea, the video was just shot very fast for 30secs for viewing. I tried viewing on MMS 2023 and was unable to hear any sound, being that you can with the 24 version give me hope at least. thanks.

Try normalising the audio: on the audio track, right-click>Normalise (at the top of the menu).

When I did that, the audio is now booming! 😉

Arrr... I tried the file on my old machine with MMS2023 and got the "can't open, you need to install Quicktime" message. But I have both QT and QT Lite on that machine.

On my new MMS2024 machine, I have only Quicktime 7.7.9 installed, not QT Lite.

On my new MMS 2024 machine, I can also open the file in MEP 2021 (older version of MMS), so I don't think it's version-related.

The plot thickens...

The information on compatibility of Pro Res files is on Apples own website and warns of using third party software to edit their video files. Vegas Pro is on the list of editors that can handle Pro Res files but not MMS or VPX.
