New user, having DVD burn problems

nick_vid wrote on 1/4/2016, 9:33 AM

Hello, having asked about Movie edit Pro 2016 on here last year I decided to go ahead and purchase it, but having a few issues with burning my first DVD in the program.

I have the 'premium' version, and I have arranged a baic project as a test that only features AVCHD files direct from a folder on my hard drive. I added a few chapter points and created a custom menu and checked it works and looks right in the preview but it wont burn to a DVD.

The project is 2 hours long (I need to be able to make DVDs this length so thought I would do a test movie that length too). I use the 'auto bitrate' button to compress the rendering to fit the disc (same as I did in Pinnacle Studio). It renders the complete movie fine but when it gets to burning the disc it starts then comes up with an error message. Saying 'write error while accessing disc'.

Im using the same discs and same DVD drive as I did with Pinnacle studio, and Ive tried it 3 times using discs from 3 different packs to eliminate a dodgy disc but each time it does the same thing.

Ive installed the newest update patch too.

Are there any settings I need to change or any ideas on how to get it to burn the disc?

Thanks.

Nick

Hi

Can you post the section of the error log from the start of rendering to the point where the error occurred.

The log file is located in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\Program version\dbk.log

where UserName is the name you use to log on to the computer.

The section you require is at the end of the log file and starts with a line with the date and time on it.

Hi

Thanks for the log extract - that was exactly what is needed.

I suspect the problem is with the discs you are using and the BD drive trying to write at the full disc speed rating of 16x.

Are they Maxell DVD+R DVD's?

I would suggest you get a few DVD-RW  and DVD-R  discs for burn testing  - I use Verbatim and Ridisc (full face printables) respectively.

I always use DVD-RW discs for the initial burn(s) of any new project, often I find it need to tweak something in the project after viewing on HD TV, and then re-use the disc.  Once the project is as I want it on DVD-RW, I use Nero to copy the DVD-RW to DVD-R.

They are 'P-Data' DVD-R discs. Its not a disc or drive issue as Ive also done a test using my previous editing software Pinnacle Studio 18 and that burns the disc with no problems using the same discs and same drive so its drfinately a problem with the magix program. Ive tried loweing the burn speed to 8x but it still does the same thing, yet Pinnacle Studio with burn the same type of disc at 16x with no problems.

Any other ideas? Really need to get this sorted asap as I have customers waiting.

johnebaker wrote on 1/5/2016, 5:03 AM

Hi

. . . . They are 'P-Data' DVD-R discs . . . .

Where are you getting these from?

I can find no information on this brand name, however the name does ring a bell from the past.

From the log you posted the discs are being identified as Ritek DVD+R - this information is retrieved from the embedded data on the disc.

          04/01/2016 20:02:55.222:   -- Medium is "DVD+R" --
          04/01/2016 20:02:55.222:   -- Manufacturer "RITEKF1" --

The manufacturer code indicates the discs are using a F1 dye and there are many reports of unreliability.

You still need to eliminate the discs - try burning to a branded DVD-RW.

I tried some Sony DVD-R discs and they worked fine for some reason. Cant really understand why as Pinnacle studio burns with my cheaper discs and the same drive without any problems at all! But at least I can burn discs, and I also tested the same thing on a Blu-ray and that was fine too.

I do have some other questions about how to use the editor that I cant seem to find the answers to but I'll ask that on a different question.

Thanks for the help, cant understand it, but I can now burn DVDs anyway!

Hi Nick,

I almost never burn directly to a DVD or BD, I encode first, check that the files work, then under File, Burn CD/DVD, Burn copy of an already created video disc. This opens Speed BurnR. This method has rarely failed me, whereas burning directly often has some problem and the disc doesn't burn correctly.

Hi Nick

how does one just "encode" first? I dont see that im option, whenever I burn my disc it just does the general thing
and writes to the disc. Im assuming at this time its encoding but how do I pre-encode before my burn?

browj2 wrote on 1/11/2016, 12:01 AM

On the burn parameters screen there is a button that says Encode or Encode directory or something like that. My computer is off. Click on it and navigate to where you want the files to go - make a new folder with an appropriate name. Ok. It should start doing it. Alternatively, don't put a disk in the Burner and the same thing will happen but I think that the files go to a default directory with the name of the project. Find out where the files go to.
