New Project BUT what Movie Settings should I select?

Xenofex2 wrote on 7/9/2022, 1:06 PM

Just I think a quick question as to which Movie Settings I should choose.

In this case, some movie clips taken by my daughter that were obviously taken with a mobile. Portrait but a check in Properties tell me it is 848 x 480. Aspect Ratio Calculator tells me it is 53:40 so that does not help me select a Settings.

Social Media gives me two square and two vertical options but none seem right for these movie clips. But then neither does UHD/HDTV/360deg/SDPAL-NTSC options.

I am using MEP 21.0.1.104.

Any suggestions please? I guess the question is also what Settings Option should be selected if outside the 'normal' parameters?

Hi George, Gid

See this tutorial on working with 9:16 AR video.

Gid

. . . . it can't be 9:16 if the width 848 (always width 1st) is more than the height 480. . . . .

It can, the video has a 90° rotation flag to indicate that it is portrait.

Thankyou for all the tips and the pointer to that Tutorial. My project worked fab.

Our daughter & family who now live abroad had just sent us some video clips of their garden. So instead of enjoying our nice warm summer evening, I have just spent the evening putting together a short movie comparing how it looks now with how it was 12 months ago when they moved in to the new build.

Couldn't resist though adding the 60's track 'English Country Garden' in the background.

Thankyou Everyone.

@Xenofex2

Glad it's worked George.

When in doubt, Gid was sort of correct, the first number is always width but a smaller number first would always indicate it is shot in portrait. Hence my first ratio number was smaller than the second number and in MEP and VPX has to be typed into the setup section manually. After that it should behave itself. If it doesn't just manually type in the pixels again in the export box if you are using the 'Export As' option.

There are plenty of ratio calculators online you can use to get from pixels to ratios.

Hi George,

For me, it depends on what I want as a final result, with due consideration given to the source format(s). If I want to watch this on a full screen, like a telly, then I'll use 16;9 (1920X1080). I am not going to turn the telly on its side to watch a portrait video. There are some effects in MEP that will fill in the left and right sides of the wretched portrait video.

I suggest that you do yourself and the world a favour and tell your daughter that you would like to see her garden and family right across your full TV screen, not just a sliver of it. Tell her to always, and I mean always, turn her cell phone sideways when taking video and film in landscape mode. There should be a law against taking portrait mode video.

Hi sorry i quit this convo, i had to go to work & it was irritating me, @johnebaker apart from the op saying it was portrait there's no mention of a 90º flag? @CubeAce mention that it was 9:16 was wrong, 848 x 480 is closer to 16:9 than 9:16 but obviously when imported or viewed because it was intended as a portrait video it would look wrong & on it's side, i got hung p on those 'facts' 🤷‍♂️🕺

@Xenofex2 In future,

Put your video on the timeline, it'll loo wrong

Go to File - Settings - Movie & swap the numbers in height & width around, then put in the Ratio box those same numbers in that order with a : between them & click OK, Magix will correct the project, you can tell what is the project size by the black on the preview window

but now the video image looks wrong

Go to Orientation & flip the image 90º using the curved arrows,

to export make sure the sizes & ratio match the project, type them in if you have to like i did in mpeg-4 pic below

but HEVC added them automatically

Former user wrote on 7/9/2022, 7:18 PM

@browj2 Hi, is there 1 effect that does that, or is it a case of duplicating the track, stretching & blurring it as i've done in the past, ?

CubeAce wrote on 7/9/2022, 7:30 PM

@Former user

Hi Gid.

You are correct.

Seeing George mention it was shot in portrait mode I switched the numbers in my head just to get the correct ratio. It comes from shooting a lot of still photography. I do it without conscious thought. The same as setting manual camera settings, it's second nature now..

While I agree with John CB on his views of shooting with a phone wholeheartedly, modern monitors can be swung around 90° to portrait position in a matter of seconds with a decent stand. Some people who work with multiple monitors will have one permanently in a portrait orientation. Useful if you have to work with documents a lot as well.

Hi,

Yes, the one that you show in your screen shot - Image Border Effects Basic - try applying one or previewing them. They use the video to create the left and right sides, usually blurred/zoom blurred, etc.

Hi Gid

. . . . the op saying it was portrait there's no mention of a 90º flag? . . . .

A MediaInfo analysis would show the rotation flag value, as we do not have the results of an analysis it is valid assumption that, as George commented the video was shot in protrait mode, that the rotation flag is set, this is common with many mobile phones - this is an example of one from my phone

Codec ID/Info                            : High Efficiency Video Coding
Duration                                 : 4 s 406 ms
Source duration                          : 4 s 395 ms

Width                                    : 1 920 pixels
Height                                   : 1 080 pixels

Display aspect ratio                     : 16:9
Rotation                                 : 90°
Frame rate mode                          : Variable
Frame rate                               : 30.037 FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 29.980 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 30.120 FPS

Chroma subsampling                       : 4:2:0
Bit depth                                : 8 bits

Stream size                              : 5.43 MiB (98%)
Source stream size                       : 5.43 MiB (98%)

As you can see from the Width, Height and Display aspect ratio it is 16:9, however visually it is portrait 9:16 - as @CubeAce commented  switched the numbers in my head just to get the correct ratio is visually correct
