Latest Intel Driver for UHD Graphics 630 is now 27.20.100.8336.
The driver update prevented my PC from booting fully this morning.
I had to manually reboot and install.
I think this is the third update in as many months.

after installation the updated video uhd driver you must restart your computer to activate the new driver. Also you can turn off and restart the computer.

The PC has a second button to shutdown safely and restart. Equally you could I suppose hold the power button down for four seconds to shut down and then restart the machine. Initial starting of the machine just gave a black screen and not even the boot logo I normally get before Windows opens but after waiting 20 minutes in case there was an install going on I decided to reboot. I checked my internet connection first with my phone just in case I was off line.
Yvon. Yes you are normally prompted to restart a machine to implement a driver update.

Nooooo - that is a last resort option if all the other shut down methods fail.
Shutting down this way is the equivalent of crashing, it leaves Windows in an undetermined state and on reboot it could do a system restore negating the updating of the drivers.
The only manual way to ensure a safe start and reload all drivers and complete updates is Windows icon, Power option, Restart

That can depend on the motherboard.
The machine didn't even get as far as to allow entry to the bios let alone windows.
The machine froze. If I didn't have a reset button for the motherboard on my machine I would have been forced to shut down using the power button or shorting the reset pins on the motherboard. Not something I'd like to do inside the case with it switched on. The reset button will reboot my system without powering the motherboard off. Holding down the Power button for four seconds does a 'Soft off' making sure things are reset before final shutdown as long as that is the setting made in the bios, which it is for real emergencies. Option on page 11 of my motherboards manual.
What I would never do is turn the mains supply off. 😇

As you say the power button can do a 'soft off', for UFI and EUFI bios's what occurs depends on the setting in the Windows Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Power Options, System Settings, these modes function on a single press - mine is configured to power off - the trigger is on the release of the power button, not the initial press.
Holding down the power button for few seconds, ie > 4, causes an immediate power disconnect, ie a shut down of the motherboard and power pack, irrespective of the Windows settings, or the BIOS type/settings. Windows never gets triggered to do a shutdown leading to potential lost data, file system corruption, and other issues such as I mentioned above.

One of the reasons I have my computer system on a UPS is because of power loss - gives me time to finish what I am doing and do a graceful shutdown, it also protects against 'brown outs' and spikes.

Hi John.
A four second push on my power off button is the soft shutdown option. A momentary press does nothing. I can push the button in for as long as I like but it shuts down at four seconds. I don't understand your reference to Windows. This was set in the dual bios. I haven't touched Windows settings. The motherboard has a lot of things I've never encountered before such as memory training that The PC did on it's first startup.
I can count the amount of power outages I've had here on one hand in the past 30 years. How often do you have to change your UPS?

I have just recently replaced my first UPS after 5 years of use, it just needs a new battery, however it was quicker to get a new one. I am replacing the first UPS's battery as I have another use for it.
Mine are APC 1400W units and computer uptime on battery is about 45 - 75 mins depending on what it is doing, with automatic shutdown when the battery is nearly exhausted.

We are less than 30 miles from the nearest power station and of course we have our grid system, don't use overhead power lines locally (they do exist for outlying villages) and our local transformer arrangements seem different. We have in the past had the occasional blip caused by generator switching that is very unusual. Can't remember when we last had one. I'm not sure what a power outage would do to a solid state drive. The house is wired against spikes but my room has it's own isolated power loop. The only mechanical drives in my system are both for what I'm working on and one external backup drive at a time. I personally have never had an uninterrupted power supply but if I lived elsewhere I would consider one. I'm probably tempting fate typing this but I've been online for 32 years now.

On my machine, as with JEBs, Windows Power Options controls what happens when I "date" (short-press) the power button. I have it set to Sleep the machine. A 4-second press, on every computer I have ever owned, has and will cause a crash stop.
Does the latest Intel Driver do anything new for MEP?
