New 2014 version of VDL/MEP announced

Appears the new VDL version will be released on-line on 22-8-13 - thanks to this link from Marion51.

As you might have guessed it will have the proxy feature and optimisations from VPX5 but more detailed information could be available next week.

Has anyone else noticed a performance improvement since the latest MEP2013 patch?

On my system preview seems noticeably smoother with my AVCHD 1080 50p files at full res. Mercalli Pro stabiliser plugin calculates at nearly 3 times the frame rate ( this has been reported as an improvement by VPX5 users). RAM utilisation seems to have been improved showing frequent 200-300MB drops in Task Manager and overall lower usage on a 45min project with 330 plus AVCHD clips. Maybe some of the improvements are already in the last patch!

Any more news on this? Seems like the reported release day has come and gone

Hi Jeff

It was released to download in Germany last week, so I guess we will see an English download version very soon. Some of the German members who have it have commented on it already. As always - goods and bads. We will see!

Magix claim it will run 8 tracks (MEP2013) of 1080 50p in picture in picture mode on a relatively "standard" i7 platform @ 3.4Ghz (presumably not in proxy mode).......would be good.....!

To quote a Videoaktiv interview with Magix senior marketing manager:-

7. When the performance, there are always promises after more real-time. On which system was it measured?

Our current, used in advertising, comparative tests we have on a computer with Intel Core i7-2600 K CPU, 3. 4 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive, and Windows 7 (64 bit) created. So good current standard.

8. We noticed in testing that currently optimizations first and foremost on the Intel processors newest, 4th generation have been made. Is this also the case with MAGIX?

We look at typical systems in each new round, as they are currently on the market. Our efforts depend on the systems, and not only on the processors. Admitted: we work closely with Intel on various projects. So, video deluxe 2014 now offers a touch-optimized interface to Ultrabooks or new WiDi technology, with which the preview image wirelessly can be streamed to a compatible TV. But multicore processor systems benefit from many improvements, such as the constantly optimized use of the GPU or the fine tuning of our Videoengine completely manufacturer-independent.

9. Benefit to owners by slightly older hardware at all of the performance optimizations?

A very clear yes! We have not changed the system requirements with the new version. Any reasonably current system with DirectX graphics and multi-core processor brings a noticeable performance increase over previous versions with video deluxe 2014.

The HDR would interest me, as would the bundled New Blue Colourfast colour corrector in the Premium version.

I am looking forward to testing it.

Peter

Thanks for the info. The UK site is still showing the 2013 version, so I'll keep checking back.

Well it's here, and I've ordered the upgrade, but using the trial while I wait for the box to arrive.

Seems to be a noticable improvement on scrubbing AVCHD on the timeline. so I guess that will show up in many perfoormance areas. I'm familar with the proxy editing feature because I have VEP as well.

I'm a bit puzzled about 4K editing though. At first glance there don't seem to be any project or export presets for 4K. I haven't got a 4K camera yet - waiting for the GoPro 4 to introduce a 25/30P mode.

Hi Jeff

Thanks for the info. Seems to be only on the UK site at the moment.

When you say scrubbing is better - is that without creating a proxy?

Yes, without making a proxy, scrubbing along a single track of AVCHD seems to "stick" less (on GOP boundaries?). It's a bit of a subjective test because by the time I've swiched between programs It's hard to be precise.

I also just tried three streams - a main track and two Picture in Pictures - and can also scrub around more smoothly. Fot this I used 45Mbps video from my Canon 5Dii

Of course this could be me looking for improvements, and it's possible that my hardware is on the cusp and the software improvements are maginal.

Incidentally,  with the same three stream test, the other editor I use (Pinnacle 16) is far more sluggish, to the point of having to preview render before you can scrub in any meaningful way.

I've had a few crashes, but that's to be expected for a .0 release. I'm now going to devote a day to using the new version!
