My video is freezing when I try to export it. (MP4)

Tony-Rapisarda wrote on 7/2/2024, 1:16 PM

Hello!

Every time I try to export my video into an MP4 format, it freezes at different points in the video. It always freezes during the export when it comes to a video I put into the timeline of the one I am making. To fix it, sometimes it works to delete the video from the timeline and then put it in again. However, this is very annoying being as it takes around 2-3 hours to export my video fully, and I have over 20 videos in the timeline that I might have to replace. This would make the overall export of the video take hours on end, and it could end up being over 24 if it froze at every single video. Is there any way to fix this?

@Tony-Rapisarda

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We need more information to help diagnose the issue(s) you are having:

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required, and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) you are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are the graphics card/integrated GPU drivers up to date?

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab  would help.

As the issues occur when adding video to the timeline what video format, codec and resolution are you using - to help with this download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to set up MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

What effects are you adding to the video clips on the timeline?

Is the 'freezing' occurring at the same time during the export ?

What is the full runtime of the video?

@Tony-Rapisarda Hi, which version of Magix are you using?

There's some info needed from you.

Can you click your icon at the top of this page - My Profile & fill in your Signature with the full name of your CPU, GPU & amount of RAM, also inc the Windows & Magix version, this will then show at the bottom of your comments,

Also there's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍

Like this -

If there's multiple video files on your project choose the ones where it freezes or you suspect maybe the reason for the freezes & post MediaInfo about those. . 👍

@johnebaker beat me to it 😂👍.

Thank you, but I have one question. Is there a way to copy all of my system information as well to put in my signature so I don't have to search for all of it and type it out?

@Tony-Rapisarda The information you've put in there is enough 👍 Add which Magix version you're using?

You can add pictures or/& video using the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment,

So you can upload a picture of MediaInfo if it's easier & use that button to upload 'A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab ' @johnebaker asked for

A screenshot of the MAGIX settings open, correc?

Also, the full runtime of the video, johnebaker, is 1:33:53. 1 hour, 33 minutes, 53 seconds. I've exported a larger one in the past though.

The video also does not keep freezing at the same time. It often occurs at different videos I've included in the timeline, not the same one. (After I replace the one it froze at originally, it moves on and freezes at a different one.).

The effects I added to it are only: Camera/Zoom shot, title editing, and Transitions.

@Tony-Rapisarda I'm sure @johnebaker might know more but your PC seems quite capable, You need to inc the MediaInfo pics, upload as many as you want. & can you say where your files are stored or where you're exporting to? If they're on an external hardrive for instance transfer speeds could impact on performance if it's slow drive.

I'm uploading my video to the captures folder in my PC. Where it automatically saves screenshots, also the place I use for most of my uploads originally. I'm a little confused on which files you want me to send screenshots from MediaInfo for, do you mean the videos I've using in the timeline, the ones it sometimes freezes on? I've only made it 19:35 of the way through my video, so over half of them may be a problem and I don't know yet.

@Tony-Rapisarda If they're all from the same camera just one will do, If you're using more than one camera upload a pic from each one, that will tell us what kind of media you're camera/s are creating & what you're using, If it tends to freeze around a similar point upload pics of those video clips that are on the timeline at that point,

There's limited help that can be given if you're (Me & others) are not sat in front of your PC so all info poss needs to be shared but that breaks down to -

  • System PC specs - You've done that 👍
  • What Program & it's settings - You've done most of that, what export settings would help 👍
  • What kind of media you're using?
  • What effects are you using? - You said 'Camera/Zoom shot, title editing, and Transitions', Does it still freeze if you disable all of those? To diagnose if it is one of those causing the problem you turn one off at a time, try export, if it stiff freezes turn that one back on & try turning off another effect & exporting, & keep doing that turning on/off only one at a time exporting after each time until you find or don't find the problem. Same goes for if it's a 'dodgy' file, If it exports to a certain point & then freezes, remove that file & try again, if it still freezes put that file back in & remove an adjacent one then try export again. & so on.
  • Where does it freeze or crash - You've answered that 👍
  • Are all your drivers up to date?
  • has anything changed since the last export you said went without problems?

Hi

Thanks for the system specs, and Device options settings.

From . . . does not keep freezing at the same time . . .and given the Device options settings for Import, Processing and Export, I suspect that the 'freezing' is due to overheating - video rendering/encoding is a processor/GPU intensive process which produces a lot of heat.

In the Device settings the CPU and its integrated GPU are doing all the work for the Processing (rendering) on the CPU prior to encoding on the integrated AMD GPU and when it approaches a set temperature the CPU will slow down processing to reduce heat generation, it may, depending on how the manufacturer configured overheat protection/thermal throttling, go into an idle state if too hot and wait until it cools down.

Is the GTX 1650Ti available as on option in the Device options, Import, Processing and Export options?

If so try setting the options to use the GTX 1650 Ti.

@Tony-Rapisarda This is intriguing, if it freezes ' when it comes to a video I put into the timeline' what is before the video? is it pictures until then?

If it is the video causing problems that is where the MediaInfo & where the video is stored comes in. 👍

One other thing I should possibly mention, it says the CPU is being used by 95% when I try to export my video.

To answer some of the questions:

is it pictures until the videos: Yes, before a video I use still pictures, then a video(s), then more photos and so on.

What type of files am I using: The type of files I use for the photos/videos are mostly PNG, JPG, MP4, MP3, and .MOV files. (Any others I try to convert to a PNG or MP4 with file converter apps.)

Is the GTX 1650Ti available as on option in the Device options, Import, Processing and Export options: Yes, I found the option. (I'm no expert on PC stuff, but I just want to say that's a camera I plugged into my laptop, just so you know)

Has anything changed since the last export I did without problems: 1 thing that I have noticed, it will not render certain transitions. It says I've selected some of them, but it just uses jump-cut instead of the selected one.

Are my drivers up to date: Yes they're all up to date.

I have one question though. What do you mean by "what kind of media are you using"?

One thing that may come in handy to know also, is that the folder my saves/media for the video are in says that there are 644 files contained in it.

@Tony-Rapisarda 👍

Different videos, effects, transitions can make the GPU or CPU get used more one than the other but if your CPU is running at 95% then that could cause over heating, again I'm not the one to advise on that.

Media is any kind of picture or video .. -

  • PNG, JPG, are picture files, you shouldn't have any problem wit them.
  • MP3 is a music file, they can cause problems but you shouldn't have any problem wit them.
  • MP4 & MOV are video container files , (They're all containers) , Containers are sort of similar to files on your PC, within the container is a lot of information that can vary wildly & video files can cause a lot of problems compared to picture or music files. One MP4 could have completely different contents compared to another MP4, the same goes for all the other containers but as I say video containers are the ones that cause problems.

This is the MediaInfo in one MP4 (pic below), nobody expects you to understand this but this information can sometimes tell why someone is having problems, & in order to understand & help it is a key part in understanding your situation, putting themselves in your shoes so to speak,

@Tony-Rapisarda Just upload a pic like I have above, you're not sharing any personal information.

This is an example, both of these are MP4, one is an MP4 AVC the other is an MP4 HEVC, the difference is the way the information is compressed to fit on an SD card (there's a lot more to it than that)

AVC has been around for yrs & every app/program is compatible with them,

HEVC is fairly new created to cater for the bigger 4k type video files created now with modern phones etc. They take a bit more work for your PC / program to work with & although HEVC has been out for a few yrs some programs still struggle a bit to work with,

There'll be an option in phone camera settings, if you switch off HEVC it creates AVC but both are MP4 😏

Like i say there's a lot more to it than that but all containers can include a huge variety of contents.

Yes I am familiar with HEVC, but not AVC. Some of my friends, or my parents will send me videos that they took that come in HEVC form. Most of the time MAGIX says it's "incompatible" with the program, hence the reason I use file converters to make them into MP4 files.

I still don't know exactly what it is you want me to send the screenshot of though. A specific video or something else?

Also, after I think 30-45 minutes, I've gotten 15 minutes of the video completed for downloading. I don't know if it will come out in the end though.

@Tony-Rapisarda It doesn't matter about sending anything if you don't want if you've got the program to work now,

Yes so you're aware that HEVC can cause problems

Yes I am familiar with HEVC, but not AVC. .............. , hence the reason I use file converters to make them into MP4 files.

I have to repeat tho, AVC & HEVC are both MP4.

@Tony-Rapisarda There's a Microsoft HEVC codec that might help if you have problems with these files, Yes I had to buy it too & I don't know why I had to https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nmzlz57r3t7?hl=en-gb&gl=GB

What does the Codec do? As I said, I'm not a genius when it comes to computers or software. It took me months to learn this editor alone.

@Tony-Rapisarda It's hard to describe but basically they make things work, If as you said 'MAGIX says it's "incompatible" with the program', You can get notifications like that if you don'r have the right codec, The same can happen with .MOV files.

Google - 🤯

A codec is a hardware- or software-based process that compresses and decompresses large amounts of data. Codecs are used in applications to play and create media files for users, as well as to send media files over a network. The term is a blend of the words coder and decoder, as well as compression and decompression.

Alright. I do have the file converter already installed on my pc, I may just stick with that because it only takes a few minutes to convert file types and to make it work with the program, without having to buy a codec.

One question though. The export is going well so far, except when I look at the 'Video preview' as it's exporting, some of videos show up as a black screen. Does this mean they're going to be black when it finished, or could it just be a glitch in the preview? Some videos are completely fine, while others are doing this.
