You have given insufficient information and there is confusion over which software you are using - Movie Edit Pro (MEP) as in the question title or Movies on DVD as in the category you have posted.
If you do mean MEP 9 then you have a very old version of the software which is not compatible with Windows 8.
If you mean MEP v9.x.x.x, which is - IIRC - MEP 16 then this too is not compatible with Windows 8.
In either case you will have to upgrade to a version of MEP which is compatible with Windows 8.
Thank you for the feedback. I have the MEP 16 Plus. i have only had the package for the past 3 and a bit years and have used it no more than 6 times. I find it crazy that a company like Magix is unable to supply an automatic free update for Windows 8.
From what I gather, this means I have to go out and purchase a new package, like the 2015 version. I stopped using Pinnacle because of this very reason. Is there perhaps another software package you would recomed, that wouldn't require one purchasing new software each time Windows update to a later version.
. . . . each time Windows update to a later version . . . . I stopped using Pinnacle because of this very reason . . . .
Whenever there is a major change in the OS then older software cannot be supported, in the case of Windows there has only been 2 major changes, in its 24 year history from Windows 3 release in 1990, which rendered some older programs unusable and require(d) purchase of a newer compatible version, these were the introduction of XP (2001) and now Windows 8 (2013)

The changes in the way Windows 8 works, compared to Windows 7, Vista and XP are significant and it is not viable, given the price MEP is offered at, to retro fit old versions - the same goes for most software manufacturers.

MEP 2015.
Windows 10 and subsequent versions should maintain compatability for at least the next 10 years based on the previous history of Windows.
Took your advise and purchased the MEP 2015 Plus package. Spent a few hours putting together a project with Video footage from the Go Pro and added photos with music as i normally would have done with my old package, only to find that firsly I received an encoding error message. I then changed the settings to widescreen PAL. It appears to encode, but when i insert the disc it burns VOP whatever. This does not playback on my DVD player. Why cant these guys make life simple and let things work the way they used to on my older package. All I want to do is make a simple DVD to playback for the family.
Apologies for delay in answering - did not get any notification that you had replied !!!

Please explain.
. . . . This does not playback on my DVD player. . . . .
Asuming the burn completed correctly, when this happens it is nearly always a disc issue either cheap discs or a defect - try a different well known brand.
I use DVD-RW or BD-RE discs (Verbatim) for my initial burns and testing - when I am satisified with the result then I copy them to DVD-R disc (Ritek or Ridisc) and re-use the DVD-RW - saves money.

What settings are you using in the DVD burn dialog?
When i check the disc after the burn process, the properties indicate say something about VOP, and that i need to download some other package for it to play back. it wont work on Windows Media Player.
The discs I use are TDK, a reputed brand in South Africa DVD-R.
Settings are - 6217kb/sec
Slow High Quality
Standard 2D (with all boxes un-ticked above the Standard 2D setting)
On advanced settings, i have left all settings as per the what has been set out in the package. the only change I have ever made is to the high quality setting. Can you perhaps advise what all my settings should be to enable the disc to burn to playback on Windows Media Player.
