I'm using a jack-to-usb connection for my instruments, but for some reason Music Maker 2014 won't work with it. I'm able to record in Audacity and Windows own recording programme with no problems whatsoever. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Did you go into Program settings and set the parameters for your instrument?
There is a tutorial under the Tutorials tab explaining how to connect external keyboards. Same principle.
BTW, we can't see your screen and don't know what you did, so it's extremely difficult to help.
