I have tried several combinations on the web page properties tab and the re-uploaded everything but it still doesn't come up. Any hints or advice will be appreciate. Thanks Jim

@James-Pattison

The full address of your website so we can have a look at it might give us a little more of a clue.

Jeff, thanks for the reply.

https://www.pattisonnet.net is the web page. www.pattisonnet.net/index.htm will bring up what is supposed to be the default page.

When I go to your "faulty" page, using Chrome, I see the following error message:

Have you checked the different suggestions made there to help you resolve the problem?

Jeff, I did try the first one and that didn't solve the problem. And since it opens just fine if you go straight to www.pattisonnet.net/index.htm I figures there wasn't anything wrong with the permissions. I am using Xara 16 Premium. In the web properties menu, on the website tab I have tried using blank (which works on another web page on the same server, index, index.htm, and htdocs\New\index,htm. Is there another place that I can put in this info?

Thanks

Jim

@James-Pattison

Hi Jim,

When you uploaded, did you use www.pattisonnet.net or www.pattisonnet.net/index.htm? It should be the first one, and no subfolder. Index.htm is the page that loads from your website.

I used the first one. This is not a new web page. It stopped working when I added some new pages. the new pages loaded and worked, another page got a change linking to the new pages and that loaded and worked. A change was made to index and that didn't load and didn't work. In fact, it started giving an error 403. All very mysterious to me

Hi

. . . . It stopped working when I added some new pages. . . .

    . . . . In the web properties menu, on the website tab I have tried using blank (which works on another web page on the same server, index, index.htm, and htdocs\New\index,htm . . . .

    This sounds like the website may be in somewhat of a 'mess' - the items I have highlighted may have created sub folders.

    The HTTP 403 error may be a result of the above or changes made in the host control panel - eg to the mime types.

    I would suggest you use a FTP program such as FileZilla to log-in to the root of your website and examine what is there.

    An option, if you have a full backup of the website that works correctly on your PC, is to move the whole site into a temporary folder on the server and re-upload.

    I never publish direct from Web Designer, preferring to export the site to a folder on my PC and test locally before uploading using FileZilla.

    Looking at the website I noted the following:

    • Page names have mixed file extensions .htm and .html file - while this works, it is inconsistent and not best practice.
    • One link, Trains, is to a subnet - there is no link to return to the main website and there is at least one link to a missing page (07-08 page)

    John, thank you for taking the time to look so deeply into my website. I tried those various combinations you highlighted because the tab give no hint as to the correct nomenclature and, according to Acrobat Reader, there is no where in the 578 page manual where the words default page or meta text can be found, hence my confusion. Especially as the trains page works perfectly with that tab blank. The reason for the lack of a return to the main web page from trains is it was set up that way for different audiences. WWW is for friends and family who might want to take a look at the trains page. Trains is designed primarily as a page for fellow model railroaders who don't need to even know about www.

    I have used an FTP program, Ipswitch WS_FTP, to look at the root, which is htdocs, but I can't see anything that is missing when compared to trains.

    Thanks again for your time.

    It turns out that the problem seems to be a combination of a server setting and an issue in Web designer. The server want index to have a capitalized I but Web designer won't let me put a capital letter in the page file name. I'm going to call the server people to see if there is a work around

    James-Pattison wrote on 2/21/2022, 2:20 PM

    Solved the last hurdle. Just export the web page to capital I Index.htm. That becomes the correct Index.htm in spite of the web page properties tab. All is good.

    Thanks again to those that took the time to help.
