MX Movie Templates: bug?

terrypin wrote on 5/8/2012, 3:40 AM

Can others reproduce the following please?

1. Open MX

2. Switch to the MAGIX Tools > Movie templates window

3. Click any template, say the first one, Action.

4. Close MX, without saving the project.

5. In Windows, open your current project folder. (If you can't remember it, open Program Settings > Folder).

Here, I find it now contains an unwanted subfolder called Action, with about 30 MB of unwanted files.

The same thing happens every time I experiment with any of the 15 templates.

Hi Terry.

Don't know whether this is strictly a bug but, yes, I get the same thing.  Open any of the Movie Templates, and whether or not you choose to Save, a new folder with the template name is created in whichever folder you have designated as the store for your video files, in my case called "My Projects".  However, if you mean this new folder is created within whatever is your last-opened folder within "My Projects" I certainly don't see that.

I think this also happens in VPX4.

Thanks Jeff. Yes, the behaviour you see is identical to mine. (I use a separate project folder for every project, and set that in Program Settings > Folder when I first start working on the project. I used to have all my MVP files in one large folder called 'Magix Projects', but that became hard to manage.)

I can't see how that can be intended? You could end up with a hundreds of MBs of duplicate 'Action', 'Documentation', 'Adventure' folders, etc, none of which you need or want!

Hi

Terry, Jeff

I think this is a normal acttion of MEP, it has to have somewhere to put all the neceesary components together - I believe different parts come from different templates/file locations so they are assembled together for the project so you can actually use them.

I would consider the behaviour of leaving the folder and contents behind when you do not save the project as a bug.  MEP ought to clean up after itself!!!

Me too John! Thankfully MEP doesn't do something similar for every feature, fade, effect, collage, etc that I explore! Support's response to my ticket about this was:

'They are not unwanted files - the programs needs them. Without uncompressing them first, it couldn't use them. This is also not the "current" project folder, since there is no current project. It it just the "project" folder, which is a default folder used by the program for different purposes.'

John, Jeff:

It seems I also have a set of permanent unpacked versions of these templates already on my HD. You too?

Hi Terry

If you think 700Mb is bad you should look at the Windows OS equivalent - ~ double MEP's for Windows 7 and most of it unused !!!

John, Jeff:

I asked Ralf about this but he replied that he did not have that permanent unpacked version of the templates at the location example I showed, or anywhere on his HD.

Do you have them on yours? I can't understand how they can be unique to me!

I do not have any of these unpacked files in my projects.

When you create a new project are you using the 'Create a new folder where all imported media will be copied to' option in the New Project dialog box?

John

Thanks John, this looks interesting. Am I right that that dialog only gets presented in the 'new user opening wizard' or whatever it's called? IOW only directly after installing (when I always cancel it without further study). Can that option be displayed in a mature system without deleting the existing videodeluxe.ini?

Anyway, I'm not sure I actually understand what it means! All imported files would get copied to a single folder? Every file I've ever dragged into any project would now be duplicated in this folder? (As well as whatever my routine packup procedures do with the original.) Or is it only for media that MEP itself imports, like these templates under discussion?

Meanwhile I look at videodeluxe.ini and found an entry whose purpose I don't understand but which seems the only relevant one:

[FileRequester]
ShowMultipleAllMediaImportRequester=C:\Docs\My Videos\PROJECTS\Lille2008 Project\

Checking that folder, all I see in it are files of my own for that specific project.

--------------------

BTW, if I recall correctly I think you have a similar approach to project management as me? (I know Alwyn does/did - never hear from him now!). If so then I assume that like me you change your Project folder for each new project?

Hi Terry

The option appears whenever you click the New project button or File, New Project as shown here

It does not matter where the resources you use in the project are located, they will be copied to the project folder created, when you add them to the timeline, after you have used this option.

The option is part of the dialog window and AFAIK you cannot turn it off.

As you say I do use a different folder structure which I create before starting a new project, MEP always points to the root folder holding all my projects as shown here

Within the DVD_Projects folder you will see one called Blank, this is the master project folder with subfolders for the various resources used.  I copy this folder and rename for each project then import all the video, images and audio etc into the appropriate folders.

Then I start the new project and save the project file in the root of the project folder.  However I do not change the default folder setting above.

Thanks John. I don't see that dialog:

And I still don't really understand the purpose of that option. Why would you want all your resources in a new folder, as well as their original locations? If you do want to keep everyhing together you can do it after the project is finished, with File > Backup Copy > Copy project and media to folder

Thanks for the explanation of your project management approach, which I'll study more carefully later.
