Multicam Editing Problem

Dan-in-MN wrote on 3/23/2023, 2:53 PM

I'm pretty new to multicam editing and just made a quick video showing the issue I am facing. I set this project up in a previous version, then after experiencing this problem, I upgraded to Studio 2023 Suite but the issue persists. It's likely user error, so if anyone can help me troubleshoot this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi

See this tutorial - although done in and earlier version of Movie Edit Pro, the same technique applies to Movie Studio 2023 which is the rebadged later version of Movie Edit Pro.

Hi, and welcome to the user to user forums.

While the tutorial @johnebaker points to does not use a master audio track and therefore the audio track is bounced back and forth between the the two tracks involved as I show below.

The top track is showing what will be written to the master file for export.

But only showing you your present selection (with master audio channel) while sorting out where you wish to change camera angles.

@johnebaker Thanks for the link to the tutorial. It helped clarify a couple things for me.

@CubeAce Thank you for expanding upon that tutorial. It's bringing things into focus. It seems that the "problem" is that I misunderstood how it works. I thought I had a different experience with my first project, but apparently not. I feel like you guys provided the solution. No time now, but I will dig into this over the next day or two. When it is clear to me how silly this question was in the first place, I will tag it as solved. 😆

Thanks!

Hi,

Here is a tutorial about mulit-cam that I did a long time ago using VPX. VPX has two monitors whereas everything in Movie Studio is done on the one monitor. Other than that, the process is the same.

Ouch, the narration audio is bad for the most part as I was trying to get more something by using reverb from time to time.

After spending some quality time with Movie Studio 2023 to sleuth out my problem. I do have some final takeaways.

The good news is that I'm not crazy! Whatever was going on in the video I sent with my original post was most definitely NOT how it's supposed to work.

I've somehow got back on track with this multicam edit and it mostly worked the way I expected it to. However, there was still a tendency for something wonky to happen, but this protocol seemed to help:

- Be sure to close all other programs to dedicate my computer to the editing process.
- Remember that Ctrl+Z (undo) is my friend.
- While editing, pause often to allow my PC to catch up.
- "Save" constantly.

What I'm going to do next is double my RAM from 32gb to 64gb, replace my cpu fan, and perform a deep cleaning of my PC, especially my video card.

I'll mark this as solved, even though the actual solution to my problem is a little murky. I'm looking forward to working on another project with my upgraded RAM.

Thanks for the help!

Hi

Looking at your video clip, the video filenames start with GX - this is the GoPro prefix for HEVC (h.265) format.

Assuming that the video is from a GoPro and is HEVC encoded, then the PC is going to struggle to keep up with the playback when in multicam mode.

HEVC is a highly compressed and processor intensive video encoding format and can make PC's struggle when multicam editing, particularly when recording at FullHD (1920 x 1080) or higher resolution.

My PC, spec is in my signature, does not give the smoothest of editing experiences when multi-cam editing 3 tracks of 4K HEVC video, I do not have to wait however it is not as smooth as when editing for example 4K AVC ( H.264 ) video.

@Dan-in-MN

I'm naturally very pleased that the problem is resolved for you but, having looked at your computer spec the following need to be mentioned: your CPU; it is now rather "old" (being 5th generation) and I see it does not include an iGPU. Also, your NVidia GPU is rather lower-powered than is ideal for high-end video editing, sorry. So, all the video "manipulation" is being undertaken by your NVidia card and I fear this will, almost inevitably, lead to problems which, regrettably, your proposed increase in RAM is highly unlikely to help with!

Also, is there any reason why you are two full releases of Win 10 behind? The current latest is 22H2. I suspect 23H1 may not be far away.

Hi Jeff.

@Dan-in-MN systems spec may be a typo. If you make the first line 22H2, then he is only one build behind the current one.

I do agree with both you and @johnebaker that the current system is going to struggle with HEVC content. Especially from a Go-Pro (If that is the source of the files).
