MP4 videos show blank areas after importing into a project.

David-Rye wrote on 6/3/2022, 5:09 PM

After I import a video into a project with the Movie Studio it is only showing a very small number of areas in the video and the rest are blacked out. The audio from the areas that are missing in the video is still there, and the video can still be shown on any type of MP4 player program. Help! (I will include a screen shot showing what I see when this happens.)

Hi

From the image, check that the Project Settings number of tracks is not set to 4.

Can you put your computer specification in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

See this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) your are working with.

The view looks awful.

Ray, that's a bit harsh. Using my very scientific method of my ruler up against the screen, that looks very much like a 4k display to me, nothing more.

@David-Rye

David, you can increase the height of your tracks by clicking the Plus (+) arrow on the right edge at the bottom of the vertical scroll bar. That may help MMS display the frames.

You might find it's easier to have the audio on the track beneath: set that by File>Settings>Program>Video Audio tab, untick video/audio on one track.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Alwyn, Ray

. . . . Using my very scientific method of my ruler up against the screen, that looks very much like a 4k display to me . . . .

I agree without the need for a ruler, if the screen shot has not been reduced in size, then it is a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) monitor or laptop screen.

However did you notice that there are only 4 tracks available in the project?

If the project has more than 4 tracks empty ones should be displayed.

When you reduce a projects number of tracks, eg down to 4, occupied tracks 5 and higher disappear, restoring the original number of tracks, tracks 5 that were occupied have lost the objects on them - undo (Ctrl+Z) will restore them if the project has not been saved in the 4 track state.

@David-Rye - try opening the auto saved backup files to see if you can get back the project as was.

Note: the auto backups though numbered 0 -9 are not an indication of the correct order of save. The auto backup is a cyclic backup with a maximum of 10, one 9 is reached the next one is numbered 0 and so on - load by date starting working with the latest to older.

@David-Rye Hi, your video says MP4 TS ? I don't know much about that kind of file,

There's a tool called MediaInfo, download it, it's free https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
After downloading, right click on the media in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the View option, select all, copy & paste in a comment here,

CubeAce wrote on 6/4/2022, 8:48 AM

@David-Rye

Apologies David. @AAProds is correct, I was harsh without justification.

I should have zoomed in more to realise the monitor image was actually quite high resolution.

@Former user

TS = Transport Stream. Often from a DVD but not always.

Hi

. . . . MP4 TS, I don't know much about that kind of file . . . .

This is an video transport stream file, usually encoded in MPEG-2 format, often seen from DVD's, as @CubeAce has mentioned, and also TV broadcast stream recording - my satellite receiver saves the broadcast streams in this format, and security camera recordings.

@CubeAce @johnebaker Thanks, yep i Googled TS & it mentioned transport stream, 👍

Do the TS files work fine in your MS,

The OP is about 'areas in the video and the rest are blacked out,' but most of the comments above are related to screen & track layout/view, I tried setting mine up just like the OP, Movie/project settings has the option for 4 tracks only, Audio on the same track but mine still shows all thumbnails in the track (32" 4k screen)

That's why i picked up on & suspect it's more about the file rather than MS layout ?🤔👍

@AAProds @CubeAce @johnebaker

Just had a look through @David-Rye previous posts to see if there's PC specs mentioned, there's none & never once have they replied after making the first post, what's with that?

Hi

Please help us to help you by providing information requested - as @Former user has pointed this has not been forthcoming above or in previous topics and is essential, otherwise we are having to make assumptions which may be incorrect.

We need information on your computer specification, Windows version and program version number, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) your are working with.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are the graphics card drivers up to date?

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab  would help.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse the video clip causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

Hi

I have had a period of the black frames adjacent to visible frames in MEP / VPX some versions ago and never really found out why. It may have been driver related, but when it occurred I could restore normal operation by deleting the clip from the timeline and then bringing the same file back in. AFAIK they were AVCHD Transport Stream files from a Panasonic camera.
