Does it freeze while the export process? And format do you export to which format. Working native on mp4 is very, very resource eating.

No freezing during export, the final product freezes at the moment the file hits a slowed  - or copied - section.

I'm exporting the mp4 to mp4 as well, but have tried exporting to mpg and wmv with the same result...

I discussed with some experts. The problem is that this is hard to reproduce. Movie Edit Pro 17 uses different mp4 codecs and the version 15 (2008) was an early stage for mp4 edting and rendering. I could imagine that the problem will be gone if you convert first to an other format, edit this and than export to mp4. Of course that can influence the quality and it will cost time. But it is obvious that there seems to be a problem with processing the changes native at the mp4 file...
