ronald-griswold wrote on 12/8/2024, 6:43 PM

i have a video " mp4" that i captured from a VHS tape. when i play it in windows media player or anything else it plays fine. when i import it to my time line using Movie Studio 2025 Suite and try to edit it ,it doesn't take long to start going out of sync. I'm trying to create short clips but can't because of the audio being out of sync. i'm stumped . any ideas? thanks !!

@ronald-griswold

Greetings, there are several rasons why this could be, the most obvious being a variable frame rate.

there are several post on this forum about audio out of sync. To help others to help you we need more information about the file. Please post the information from Mediainfo as mentioned here https://www.magix.info/us/forum/please-do-the-following-before-posting-your-question--621831/

Hi

@me_again

Has pointed you to the information we require from the technical side.

On the practical side,

. . . . i captured from a VHS tape . . . .

Was this done using a USB Video Grabber directly into Movie Studio or some other software and what recording settings did you use?

The MediaInfo analysis of the video that is being imported would help - see this tutorial on how to setup and analyse a video clip to get the data required.

john , i used a pinnacle dazzle as my interface between my pc and VHS player. i then used Magix video recorder and saved directly to a folder on my pc. my pc specs as follows. processor . intel i9-9900k , motherboard gigabyte z390-e , hard drive 500 gig m.2 , video card MSI 1660 super . 32 gigs of ram .

settings were ...

MPEG-2-Export (DVD)
Video: MPEG-2; 720x576i; 29.97 frames/s; CBR 4500 kbit/s; SOFTWARE encoding
Audio: MPEG layer 2; Stereo; 48000 Hz; 224

Like i said it plays fine outside of MS 2025 i'm having difficulty getting the mediainfo working . i'll keep trying

thank you, ron

Hi Ron

Thanks for the info on your system and how you recorded the VHS capture.

The MediaInfo data will gives us a clue to what is going on, there is no issue with tthe PC system except the use of the Dazzle as capture device?

As an aside I have had 2 different model Dazzle devices, neither could be used with any other software, they are 'locked' to Pinnacle Studio. Which model is yours?

so i went radical, every year i like to wipe my drive and start fresh. so formatted my drive and reinstalled everything. it seems to be running good. i had Realtek drivers which contained sonic studio within it. SS is know to cause a lot of different audio issues . i can tell you gamers hate SS. Movie studio in some ways is much better than pinnacle studio "which i have used for many years" . it's a lot more stable , faster loading and doing tasks and i like the simple layout. on the down side of MS ... it's more compacted and it does thing a lot different than i'm used to. for me pinnacle failed dramatically when it comes to never fixing several performance and crash issues. i decided to stay with MS as it's a lot less stressful not having to deal with continuous lock up's and crashes . sorry i didn't mean to rant. I'm thankful for forums where people help in a timely manner . i can say i will be asking a lot more questions . so many thanks in advance. happy holidays

Sounds like you had installed the Asus version of the Realtek drivers which includes the Sonic Studio software.

Personally I only install the genuine Realtek drivers, having found that some sources, ie motherboard/system bulders, laptop manufacturers and Windows driver update, do not always enable all the features of a Realtek sound card.

Hi.

Personally I don't think having the Sonic Studio program installed with the Asus RealTek audio drivers is a problem.

Everything in the Sonic Studio can be turned off and I have never had less functionality out of the Windows audio settings section because it was installed. Just make sure everything within it is turned off.

Although I would say it is wise not to turn the settings fully up if you expect to have stability from those programs, say using 32 bit @ 192kHz, and possibly best practice to make all inputs and outputs the same. I am running four different video editors and three daws using 24 bit 96kHz settings all round with the only limits being my own stupidity on occasion think my system will handle many tracks and effects at the same time. (A use of a multiple 48kHz at 24 bit seems to work just fine in the video and daw programs.)

Audio editing wise that successfully currently stands at 52 audio tracks running 34 vsts of varying complexity and resource requirements.

With video editing in VPX that apparently comes down to two audio tracks and a further 12 tracks with a mixture of elements (photo, titling, animation and video) to produce video without too many problems.

As for your video data.

I personally don't think I have seen a variable GOP structure before in any MediaInfo data before. Normally that would follow a steady pattern with the structure mentioned.

It also helps anyone here to possibly identify problems more easily if you put your complete system specs in your signature. It could be massively helpful.

Ray.

Hi

Thanks for the MediaInfo data, what I was expecting to see is not there, ie Variable framerate, so the video file appears not to be the problem.

Try the following:- right click the video file(s) on the timeline and select Create (new) frame table, save the project, this should fix the audio sync.

ok so i have an update.. I AGAIN started from the beginning. here's what i learned.. with MS2025 itself installed on a very "bare system fully updated" i can capture a 2 hour video using a dazzle dvc100 with no issues. the captured video will play fine using windows media player however when inserted into a timeline using MS 2025 the audio starts going out of sync near the end of the recording again it plays fine otherwise. i have tried to do the create frame table and the only thing it does is cut the video " most likely at the point where it goes out of sync". so i end up with a shorter clip than when i started. so i decided to try installing my old pinnacle studio 21 as a alternate plan to get this videos onto a DVD. when i did that not only did the video captured in PS 21 have a lot of static " like before" but it somehow changed something in MS 2024 as well . so anything captured using 2025 also has a lot of static. so for the 3rd time i dumped my system and only installed 2025 and that's where i am at now.... i can capture a video but can't edit it successfully . lastly a bug that i found was if i try to use magix capture by itself it will come up but as so as i select any of the input options ,it closes out and .. nothing . I'm all ears lol

If you could give the exact specs of this

a very "bare system fully updated"

That may prove to be extremely useful. Never confuse the ability to play a file back successfully on any given machine with the ability to edit it.

They are entirely two different processes requiring certain specifications to be met including the versions of the graphics drivers used. An explanation of what is required to help members fault find is in the sticky post here.

Greetings, do you fancy taking 5 minutes to do a simple little test? If so :

  1. Download and extract Pazera Audio Extractor from https://pazera-software.com/products/audio-extractor/ - It's "portable" so no installing required.
  2. Make a copy of your awkward file and rename it, for example to test.mpg; anything really that's different to your original.
  3. Add this test.mpg to the Audio extractor, make sure "try extract original audio stream" is selected, select the Output Directory and click OK.
  4. Place the test.mpg you created on the MS 2025 timeline but DO NOT play it.
  5. Make sure you have audio and video on separate timeline tracks, ungroup the tracks and delete the audio,
  6. Add your extracted audio to the timeline but DO NOT group the audio and video.

Does the audio stay in sync when played?

If so, all is well. If not repeat the above process but instead of using "try extract original audio stream" use MP3 with everything set to AUTO.

Does that work?

edit - other audio extractors are available. If you already have one then use that. I use Pazera because it's small and easy and, most important, free 😉
