MP3 imports are being reduced to 4-seconds length + Not playing!

Apollo89x wrote on 3/25/2025, 6:13 AM

I have Movie Studio Platinum (2023)

When I try adding MP3 files to the timeline, they all get reduced to just 4-seconds duration / Plus even that 4-seconds length file does not play.

I have attempted to add various different MP3s :: All encounter this exact same issue though.

Hi

Was the addition of MP3's working before, and is now doing this?

If so, what changed on the computer, eg Windows update, different computer etc?

A MediaInfo analysis if one of the MP3's would help?

I haven't ever tested MP3s in MEP before (as never had the need).

MP4s always worked though.

I haven't downloaded any updates / Nor made any changes to any settings.

Yes, we need that MediaInfo readout. I have had very occasional issues with MP3s in the past and they needed recoding in something like Audacity.

Can you host one of the problem MP3s on Google Drive or similar for us?

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Here's one of the dud ones I use occasionally:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1A9dMVctSor-q-uzd5QjzMf3ab9qEN5tl/view?usp=sharing

It is 33 minutes long (an air traffic control recording) but comes into Magix at 1 second long and no sound.

I use Audacity to save it as a VBR 192kbps, 48KHz MP3 and Magix opens that without issue.

I don't have WMP 10 installed but can import normal MP3s OK.

So there definitely are "odd" MP3s about.

Is this what it's supposed to look like, bits of audio with big spaces/silences in between?

PS. I have WMP installed where i just tried it & it plays ok like in VP, so I guess it is supposed to look like that..

Hi

From the mediaInfo data:-

. . . . . mp3 . . AAC LC . . . .

AAC encoded audio in a MP3 container format is a 'non standard' combination, hence the issue you are having

For the MP3 container file, the supported audio encoding formats are MPEG-1 Audio Layer III or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III.

As @AAProds has demonstrated using the correct container file/encoding format imports correctly into Movie Studio.

If the downloader you are using allows it, select the option to encode to the correct MP3 standard, or if there is no option to change the audio encoding format, select, if available, the M4A file format which supports AAC encoding.

If neither are possible then you need a downloader that will provide the correct file/encoding formats, eg 4k Video Downloader+

Unfortunately, the Number 1 Result can be such because its owner/manufacturer has "paid" to have it appear at the top of any listing!

I would wholeheartedly concur with both @johnebaker and @AAProds; owning and using 4K Video Downloader +, I have never experienced any problem accessing the audio or video of any file it downloads. Though I will freely admit I have never even considered downloading the audio in mp3 format since that is not "usual" for any video file. If I wanted a "separate" mp3 of the audio I would open the video file in MSS/VPX and "Export audio as mp3".
