mp3 clips imports = skipping and noise

Jaka-Mele wrote on 4/6/2021, 6:03 PM

When I import mp3 clips, they are not played back perfectly, but instead, I hear micro skips and "noise"...

if I convert them to wav files and import those, then everything works ok.

This is really pathetic problem to have in 2021... What is the solution here Magix? I have my source audio files mostly in mp3, so this is really annoying...

@Jaka-Mele

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums, so not a contact for any Magix staff and no-one from the company is likely to read your post!

Unfortunately, (compressed) .mp3 files can be created using a variety of sample and bit rates. These can cause problems with playback in many different programs, especially video editors which are primarily designed to work with (uncompressed) .wav files. What is the exact format (sample and bit rate) of the files you are attempting to import? MEP will expect, e.g., the sample rate to be 48kHz; anything else requires on the fly resampling and this could well cause the problems you are experiencing.

Personally, I would always convert .mp3 to .wav before attempting to use it in MEP or VPX, especially if any "editing" of the audio is required.

As this problem is more pressing for me, as I have just mp3 source audio files, and would prefer to work with them directly, I am providing more info. First @emmrecs thanks for info.

I am using Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium 2021 the latest version (no updates available).

I have Ryzen 1800, 64GB of ram, 1 TB nvme drive, Geforce gtx 1080Ti... using Windows 10 pro latest build. I am IT professional, so trust me, my computer is ok.

Here is what mediainfo tells me about my mp3 file:

And here is the actual mp3 file - if anyone wants to import it to magix movie edit 2021 and playback it there to hear the pops and noise... The problem is that I cant change source files (I get them from another service)... so can I do anything on MEP side to make it work with them, without the need to convert to wave? Or at least to have MEP automatically convert them to wave, once I import them to my project?

Ideas welcome.

@Jaka-Mele

Thanks for the additional info and especially the MediaInfo data.

The latter shows two items, at least, that are going to give ANY video app problems, I think: the Sampling Rate is a very unusual 24 kHz (as I wrote before, MEP will expect 48, possibly 44.1); the bit rate is an extremely low 32kB/s. Inherently, that bit rate is bound to result in very low quality audio. (I would expect .mp3s to have a bit rate of at least 128 kB/s, preferably higher, for anything like "decent" quality.) The fact it is mono should not be a problem.

Bottom line: you are expecting MEP to play "perfectly" a very low quality file which has been recorded at a sample rate which requires MEP to convert it "on the fly".

The actual .mp3 is not attached to your post. Did you forget to actually attach it?

There is an option within MEP to export audio as .wav (under File>Export movie>Audio as .wav) but the process is not automatic.

Thanks Jeff.

I uploaded the MP3, but somehow it did not save it when I submit comment.

Let's try again.

Or if it wont work - here is the link to it directly: https://gofile.io/d/W2JsjC

Hi.

Your mp3 file seems to only have a sampling rate of 24kHz. That is half of that needed for movie quality footage. While it plays back reasonably well in a player it would not suffer another re-encoding or compression without showing signs of degradation in my opinion.

Hi

I agree with @CubeAce - for speech the sample rate is OK for playback only, however not for use within a video editor - the recording is going to need up-sampling (converted) to 48kHz sample rate using an audio converter or editing program.

Hi

Link now removed - which is now 48 kHz sample rate.

The was re-encoded using Nero ReCode - which does not double the speed of the audio as some converters do.

Yes - no problem with this MP3.

Thank you.

In the meantime I found FRE:AC - a freeware opensource audio converter... and if I convert my mp3s to wavs - no problem any more.

thanks all!
