Movie Studio Keeps Crashing/Not responding

Rpalm wrote on 7/29/2022, 12:33 AM

Lately I've been having trouble using Movie Edit and Movie Studio. Projects I've been working on keep cashing. It usually happens when I push the play button to view a video to grab a clip or when I'm moving clips around in the timeline. Sometimes it'll work fine but it'll suddenly stop working and I have to close it with the task manager. I've been struggling with this for a while and would like to find a solution.

Hi.

In all fairness you never completed the requests from other users trying to help you with your last post which may have given you the answers you needed on your first request.

Most crashes are the result of stack overflow problems which in turn are often due to either C: drive space for the program to hot swap the files in use while the program runs or a lack of motherboard ram which then forces the program to start to write data to the C: drive. Depending on the amount of data contained within the project and the mount of fades and effects in use it is easy to go way above 16GB of ram use. I do that on a regular basis and my project rarely exceed 15 minutes.

Ray.

I see there's a few 1-star writeups for that graphics card. That might be the issue.

However, there have also been some users of MEP 2022 that have experienced the program carrying on like a pork chop because of it's inability to cope with some graphics hardware selections.

Go to File>Settings...>Program and click on the Device Options tab. Experiment with these settings:

For example, try the three drop-downs all on CPU, or all on your graphics card to see if that affects your stability. You may have to try each setting on a different component.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

In addition to @CubeAce and @AAProds we still need the MediaInfo information about the AVI file you are importing and are they from a DV camera?.

Listen I work a demanding job and I edit in my spare time. I also don't appreciate being talked down to ok? I have time now and I REALLY need this resolved so let's just start from the beginning.

So the problem I'm having is the program keeps crashing/freezing when I do certain things which include trying to preview a video, importing a clip, trying to extend or shrink a clip on the timeline, or by simply moving the cursor to a new spot on the timeline (even a blank area). That and the fact that trying to use the dropdown menus in the program settings also causes a crash leads me to believe it's probably not any of the videos I'm using but either a hardware or software issue. I noticed it seems to happen when I come back to a project. When I start I don't seem to have any problems but when I save and return that's when the problems start. I've also been using Movie Edit Pro Premium, Movie Studio 2022 Platinum, and Video Pro X14. All should be up to date but all have the exact same problems. I've not had this much trouble with previous versions.

Here are my specs:

I'm on Windows 10 64-bit I've been meaning to upgrade to 11 but haven't gotten around to it. I'll get on that if it'll help.

My processor is AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Eight-Core Processor 3.20 GHz

I'm using 16 GB of RAM on a GIGABYTE X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING AMD Ryzen AM4/ X470/ USB 3.1 Gen 2 Front Type C/ ATX/ DDR4/ Motherboard

My graphics card is a Sapphire 11265-05-20G Radeon Pulse RX 580 8GB GDDR5

What else do you need?

Hi

We appreciate the frustration you are having with the program, and limited time available due to other commitments.

Fault diagnosis can be time consuming, having to test and eliminate various options and requires a systematic approach.

The additional information you have given helps a great deal.

. . . .  trying to use the dropdown menus in the program settings also causes a crash leads me to believe it's probably not any of the videos I'm using but either a hardware or software issue. . . .

Agreed, and I would also agree with @AAProds comment, the RX 580 is known to have some 'issues'.

To eliminate potential causes in the following order:

Update the RX 580 drivers to the latest version here, if they are not up to date

If that does not fix the problem, then as @AAProds has recommended here you need to try the various graphics settings. I would suggest setting all 3 options to CPU, this is the base combination which should work without crashing.

If the crashing still occurs then I would suggest you raise a support ticket with Magix using the link at the top of the page, see this Support article on how to navigate the support system. Do note they will require more information, as well as the crash log which is located in

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\Videodeluxexx_premium\Crash where xx = 2 digit number

Ok I spent the last few days playing around with things. I've updated my drivers which seemed to help enough to used the graphics settings and I set them all to CPU. I'm still seeing issues.

Do you really think it's the graphics card? I've not had any issues with it before. I even stream hefty games with no problems.

Colin-Hay wrote on 7/8/2024, 6:06 AM

I must say I've been having exactly the same problem - MS 12 was pretty stable but every release since then crashes every 5-10 minutes of editting - typically on playback after modifying the video - it really makes me want to edit everything back in MSP 12 - I haven't the used the pro version for awhile but I had the same issues their too

Colin-Hay wrote on 7/8/2024, 6:06 AM

Could it be to do with having multiple versions installed ?

Colin-Hay wrote on 7/8/2024, 6:24 AM

I turned GPU card use off and it still crashes after 3 or 4 edits

I also don't see any log files within the last year in C:\Users\Colin\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX

I'm going to uninstall every version of MSP and Vegas Pro, install just one, try it for awhile, add plugins and monitor - hopefully I can then identify what causes it to crash

Hi

. . . . MSP 12, 15 and 16 installed . . . .

I assume this is a typo and you mean Movie Edit Pro (MEP) 12, 15 and 16

. . . . may of course also been an issue with 3rd party plugins . . . .

Like @Gid, I have several versions of Movie Edit Pro / Magix Movie Studio (MMS) installed on my PC, and some of the older plugins, do not work correctly without updating them to a newer version which is compatible with either Windows 11 and/or versions of the software from MEP 2020 (MMS 18) onwards which use the Infusion Engine GPU resource management feature, this was introduced with MEP 2020.

@johnebaker Hi, yep

If Magix Movie Studio Suite 2022 is the only Magix program installed then there shouldn't be a problem,

it really makes me want to edit everything back in MSP 12 - I haven't the used the pro version for awhile but I had the same issues their too

If the crashes etc. mentioned are in all the versions after MSP12 then that begs the questions

  • Is it media related, + Vegas settings.. ...
  • Is it PC spec related, does MSP12 work well because the PC are the same age,
  • Is this a Vegas forum problem not a Magix forum problem.
