Movie Studio freezes when editing multiple 3D videos

clement5 wrote on 12/17/2022, 1:15 PM

I have been trying to edit a set of 3D HD movies which were created as side by side ~60HZ frame rate.  The files and a screen shots of the project are at: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgEkZSUlkAcxgb0eg2M8ATSCee6zgQ?e=p0ch4r

I first tried to import the videos as a group, but when I tried to edit Studio Suite 2023 kept on freezing.  I Tried to edit them as a group to make them 3D format, and that worked, but when I tried to align the videos as a group, the program promptly froze and had to be killed using the task manager.

Finally I put the videos into the timeline one by one and adjusted the vertical 3D alignment on each individually, and saved the project.  But now I have a project which is not functional and freezes most any time I try to do something.

I also tried to import the same videos into Movie Studio 2022 Platinum with worse results.  However the 2022 Studio Automatic 3D alignment worked, while the 2023 did not.  The 2023 went into an infinite loop.

I have Windows box with 8G memory, Windows 11 Pro updated to most recent version, internal sound, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz   3.19 GHz, nvidia Geforce GT 1030, 3D passive monitor.

Hi.

Can you give us a screen shot of your current program settings please similar to the one below?

Also you say in your post you have 8GB of ram but your signature says 16GB. Which is it please?

How many drives are you using and for what?

Are both GPUs active?

What is a Windows Box?

Yes, I have 16Gb. Box is often used to mean computer of some kind, so a Windows box would be a PC with Windows. I have 4 drives active. 1Tb has the system plus documents and some pictures, 4Tb internal mainly used for picture/video storage, and 8TB external used as back up for the other drives as well as some more pictures/videos. There is one small SS drive used as scratch for a few programs, but not for Magix Movie Studio. I hadn't remembered I had setup my signature. The program settings are basically the default except for the picture length of 20s and the Import/Export/Automatic preview off (unchecked). I have no idea if the GPUs are both active. The device options list the NVIDIA under hardware acceleration for all functions. So which settings do you need to see?

Hi.

The nvidia 1030 is not a very strong card to be using for MS 2023. 2GB vram 64 bit bus will make it slow and possibly short on memory. I had an nvidia 1030 and by the time I upgraded to Movie Edit Pro 2020 I needed to get a new card just to get a smooth playback at HD resolutions. Do check your nvidia card is using the latest nvidia gaming driver which is currently version 31.0.15.2756 That may help if not already on your computer.

If the HD 630 is not showing in the programs Import Processing Export settings it is not active. Ideally you should have both GPUs enabled in the bios but that may be difficult to do unless you can either put a headless ghost into the Intel video port or connect a second monitor to it as the port would need to be active. Even with the nvidia selected for Importing Processing and Exporting the program would still use the Intel HD 630 GPU on the processor to help out with the 3D graphics processing and video encoding on rendering. It really does help to have both GPUs active. Disproportionately so.

The C: drive ideally should have at least 10GBs free space for Movie Studio 2023 to produce temp files to move around while the program is playing or rendering. Having less may be causing the freezing. Also make sure you are letting Windows decide how much virtual memory the system is using and not using custom settings.

So try checking you have the latest video driver first for the nvidia 1030 and you have enough free C: drive space.

If that doesn't help try to activate the Intel HD 630 graphics chip. If you don't have a second monitor then you can get a headless ghost from Amazon for around £5 which will fool the graphics port into thinking it has a monitor attached. You may then have to sort out your desktop displays before opening Movie Studio again and make sure the activated HD 630 has the latest Intel driver which is version 31.0.101.2114 .

With the query about the video card, I tried putting the settings to use the CPU rather than the GPU. That got rid of the freezing, but there are significant delays in the processing of some operations and temporary freezing. So the Nvidia card which came with the computer is probably part of the problem. I will check out other possible changes, and consider a new video card. I have adequate free space on the C drive, and I set the page file to system managed.

Hi.

I don't know how Magix develop their code or how they implement various parts of a computer to work with each other to make the program work, but first I would go with trying to make the Intel HD 630 graphics chip active. Mainly because it is the cheapest option with the aid of a £5 headless ghost to try out and even with another video card upgrade. Do make sure it has the correct plug for the type of port as there are several different versions of headless ghosts. The adding of the Intel GPU would be of major benefit in my opinion as it is fully direct X 12.1 compliant. Especially in playback as is seems responsible for a some of the 3D rendering during playback and the extra power draw is minimal. (15w). Graphically when you look at what is happening within Task Manager it doesn't seem to amount to much but the difference in playback is very noticeable using the two GPUs together.

I think your assumption and findings are correct but you could try to go one further and try plugging your monitor into the Intel port to activate it and leave the nvidia card idle for comparison. Of course do that switching around with the computer off and then reboot. In theory you should also see an increase in use of motherboard ram as the HD 630 grabs more of it for 3D rendering than the CPU would do alone. You could also try changing the Import Render and Export to the HD 630 for comparison.

As far as bang for buck in video graphics cards at present, that may boil down to where in the world you reside. In the UK at the moment that would probably be an nvidia 1650 or 1650 Super card although better performance could be found using a card with 6GBs of vram and a 192 bit bus or 256 bit bus over a 128 bit bus, like the 2060 or 2080 but they become more expensive. A newer nvidia card to consider may be the 3070. Personally I would not be tempted by the AMD equivalents as their version of the NVENC hardware encoder still has something to be desired over the nvidia offering for video decoding / encoding.

In addition to @CubeAce comments the GTX 1030 only supports decoding of AVC/h.264 encoded video with support up to 4K UHD (3840 x 2160), encoding is not supported.

Given the rest of your computer specification, for updating the graphics card I would suggest at least an RTX 2060 - this would bring your PC upto the same level as my PC which handles 3D video well.

Hi John.

The reason I included the RTX 3070 was that two weeks ago the 3070 was cheaper than both the 20 series in the UK but this week RTX 20 series card prices have both plummeted below the price for a 3070. So low in fact I may get one myself.

Also would you concur about enabling the UHD 630?

I do, however the i7-8700 has a UHD 630 hence my comment that with a RTX 2060 it would be identical to my PC.

I would add that since downloading the latest clips provided and editing them on my laptop - also UHD 630 / RTX 2060, all editing operations are very smooth.

. . . . Automatic 3D alignment . . . .

Using Auto alignment was not necessary as the video clips are already aligned by their very nature. This control is only used when using images/video from 2 separate cameras, or single video clips imported twice, to create a pseudo stereo effect (as detailed in the manual) and importing to the timeline, one under the other and creating the 3D stereo from these.

Using all xfades between clips, exporting as Anaglyph SBS Full width there is no glitching on preview and export was very fast taking 8 secs for a 24 sec long project at 60 fps.

I enabled the Intel UHD Graphics 630 and now the video plays without big pauses, but stuttering. The Automaic alignment of 3D R/L frames of the video still doesn't work. It however also doesn't go into an infinite loop, just does nothing. The 2022 version worked, so they broke something.

clement5 wrote on 12/19/2022, 7:47 PM

As to the comment about the auto alignment not being necessary, the camera I was using has a vertical shift between left and right images. It is a constant shift, but after I update the firmware I can fix the problem internally in the camera. The needed correction is about 15pixels. It is a Qoocam EGO which is currently still under development with firmware upgrades. The videos from my older Fujifilm W3 never posed difficulties because they are 720P 24fps rather than full HD 60fps. I am not prepared to spend on the graphics card update at present.

Hi.

It might not be the program but the changes made to Direct X earlier in the year and the way it handles 2D and 3D rendering. Microsoft is also changing the way Windows deals with graphical data as further releases are made which is why it is imperative to keep up to date with the latest graphics driver releases.

There are still bugs being reported back to Microsoft and subsequent updates may cure some of the problems but it could also be a lack of video processing power that is causing the issue. The whole point of introducing the current programs ability to select different GPUs or the CPU in the program settings was so that people could try to find a selection that worked for them if their system was below par for a given task.

You could try selecting CPU for Processing which may make playback worse but the exports better. I'm assuming at this point you just stuck your monitor into the UHD 630 port so have lost the support of the 1030 which I think would have still been able to help out with the 3D processing.

Each Magix upgrade is aimed at providing better performance on the latest components. The older the components get, the less effective the program will become. This has always been the endless cycle of upgrading problem.

While I have remained on MEP 2022 because I knew my system was already getting sluggish with my current program, I did upgrade my copy of VPX to the newest version and low and behold it is running worse than my copy of MEP that is just one generation behind.

Quite often, a new more powerful camera may need the latest editing packages to be able to process the files which in turn can mean a need to upgrade the components of the system. That has always been the case but more recently the pace of progress has been much faster.

The only way to confirm it is a bug is to supply an offending clip for others to test. Otherwise no-one will take the comment seriously and will just put your comments down to being ill informed. At best a supplied clip, tested and confirmed by at least one other user would give more credence to your observation.

If you are using the same format video files as those you uploaded then, rephrasing what I previously commented above:

Using Auto alignment is not necessary as the video clips are already aligned by their very nature of being SBS.

There is nothing for the Auto alignment to work with - this control is only used when using images/video from 2 separate cameras, or single video clips imported twice, to create a pseudo stereo effect (as detailed in the manual) and importing to the timeline, one under the other and creating the 3D stereo from these.

The video clips are misaligned with the L image about 13 pixels higher than the R. They need to be aligned to get rid of the height disparity. While this is not a problem for images viewed in a stereoscope, it can cause distress for images viewed on a screen of a 3D TV, phone or tablet. In the 2022 program the autoaligment would fix this, but in the 2023 version I have to do it manually. Some people easily accomodate to a disparity, while others can get headaches. Stereoscopes isolate the picture from any other things, which helps the eyes accomdate. The old View-Master images had some vertical disparity which was not noticed because the images were surrounded by black space. SBS does not guarantee alignment.

@clement5

Hi

Were the SBS video clips created from 2 separate cameras video clips or from a 3D (Stereo) camera?

If from 2 separate cameras, or a 3D stereo camera that creates 2 files one for the left and another for right, then the original video files should be imported one above the other, left video above right on to the timeline and then the Stereo effect used to set to 3D and the alignment adjust automatically or manually - see the Stereo 3D section of the manual, p131 onwards

The files were created by a currently available 3D camera, Kandao Qoocam EGO. All samples of this camera have a problem with vertical alignment between L&R, but there is a firmware update that can be used to fix this. The firmware is still under active development. I have taken poorly aligned 3D pictures and videos and fixed them using a variety of programs, so I know how to do this. I took two field sequential videos, upscaled them, and aligned them in both time and space putting them on two separate tracks in Movie Edit Pro. Each scene and sometimes parts of scenes had to be carefully shifted in time Individually. One of them is on YouTube in 3D. Actually all field sequential 3D DVDs or tapes have bad alignment problems. They were created from dual strip 3D movies, but poorly aligned with a number of bad splices. Even the Fuji W3 3D camera needs a tweak to the alignment.
