Movie Studio 2023 freezing with 4K input

Stephen-Fearnley wrote on 10/21/2023, 1:57 PM

Trying to create a movie using MS 2023 [version 22.0.3.172 (UDP3) UG code 8473 KA1] with 4K source material and it freezes afer a few inserts. Re-installed and updated program.

Windows 10 Pro (22H2) with 32GB RAM. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650.

I can create the video with Movie Studio 18! But 2023 freezes!

Any ideas? Used to be able to contact MAGIX directly by email for help but cannot find email address.

@Stephen-Fearnley Hi, 'Movie Studio 18' ? I don't think there ever was a Movie studio 18, Magix changed the name of Movie Edit Pro to Magix Movie studio in 2022 i think & so the first Magix Movie Studio would be 21 or 22, Vegas Movie Studio 17 was the last of the Vegas Studio line & is a totally different program. 🤔

Can you say what CPU you have.

I think someone else on this forum has a GTX 1650 but working with 4k video would be pushing it a bit with that graphics card.

Your video material could make all the difference as to how well it works in MS (Movie Studio) so -

There's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍

Hi

We need more information to help diagnose the issue(s) you are having:

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor make/model in full.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are you getting any error messages, if so then please quote them in full or provide screen shots.

Are the graphics card/integrated GPU drivers up to date?

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab  would help.

As the issues occur when adding video to the timeline what video format, codec and resolution are you using - to help with this download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

@Former user

Hi Gid.

I have a nvidia 1650 Super but also the Intel HD 630 from my i9900k and it copes with 4K just fine but I suspect that @Stephen-Fearnley is also loading HEVC files as Stephen was looking for the codecs in an earlier post and says he can load some files. I also think Stephen may be referring to Movie Edit Pro 2017 which would probably have worked better with an older CPU as well which could probably use an internal Intel HD 520 or lower at the time and still could as the program supports Win 10 and only requires Direct X 9.1 as far as I remember.

I think if the nvidia driver is up to date MS 2023 should cope on his system with 4K if Stephen stuck to using MP4 clips but not HEVC. I could of course be wrong at this point as I'm guessing based on one previous post request.

This is a mixture of 4K MP4 clips and photos.

@Stephen-Fearnley

Hi.

Looking at the file data and system specs you should not really be having any problems with the program freezing unless

A: Your (I'm guessing) 500GB C: drive or the project drive(s) are getting low on free disc space.

B: Alternatively if you are using an external drive is it connected to either a USB 3 port of USB C?

A USB 2 or running a drive through a hub may not transfer files to memory quick enough.

C: Also the Windows system build info is missing which should be 1945.3570 and the latest nvidia driver is 537.58 but also check you have the Intel 31.0.101.2125 driver or higher for your Intel HD 750 GPU. (if available, I'm stuck with the one shown as I think support for HD drivers has stopped.)

You have a newer processor than me but the 1650 is behind my 1650 Super in power by 35% which is mainly down to clock and memory speed differences but I'm not convinced that would cause a problem, whereas not taking advantage of being able to use the Intel GPU as well because it is not enabled in the bios might be.

Do make sure both GPUs are active in the Bios. With your settings you should seeing activity from both GPUs depending on what you are doing, even with the nvidia card set for all the Import, Processing, and Export duties.

@Stephen-Fearnley

Hi Stephen.

Yes it looks like the Intel GPU is not enabled in the Bios.

Unfortunately a lot of motherboards have different Bios page layouts and there is no way I can screen capture how to do that even if I had a similar motherboard you could copy.

You will need to get your motherboards manual out as it is mainly the power of the Intel GPU that would help out in this instance but I'm sure that is what would help most in this instance as the Magix Infusion engine is built around the advantage of being able to use the two GPUs together. Even though the nvidia is a strong GPU, the Intel GPU is very good and fast at reading and encoding.

Maybe @johnebaker has more insight about enabling the Intel GPU to help you out as I'm convinced that would help enormously.

[Edit]

If you have two monitors try plugging one monitor into the motherboards HDMI socket to activate the Intel GPU. If you don't have a second monitor you may need to buy a headless ghost. That should enable the Intel GPU without playing with the Bios but then you may have further work to do to ensure you can see what is going on in your monitor.

(More Edited info sorry)

Once you have the Intel GPU enabled make sure to download the driver for it.

I sometimes forget that not everyone that does any form of editing uses more than one screen. I have been using a two screen setup for so long I think of it as normal.

I assume when you say all drives are SATA you are referring to them being internal drives. Good news on the C: drive. One problem less to discard.

@Stephen-Fearnley

Hi Stephen.

If you get yourself a headless ghost you shouldn't have to go into the bios. You could even unplug your monitor from the nvidia GPU and plug it into the motherboard HDMI port to get the Intel GPU working but that may shut down the nvidia card. Without the use of two monitors you need to get yourself a headless ghost which tricks the GPU it's plugged in to into thinking it is powering a monitor. The problem then becomes trying to get Windows (and possible Movie Studio) to show up in the GPU your monitor is plugged into as it could just as easily be placed onto the GPU powering the headless ghost. That can become a bit of a faff but can be done by tweaking the Windows settings to duplicate the monitor view rather than have the view extended across the two screens which should then be selectable in the Windows Display settings.

Someone else may have a better solution though.

Ray.

Hi

Hi Stephen.

As for the changes as to how the program has changed in use over the years, you have to realise that each new version is produced to take use of the latest computer components and operating system which means moving from older hardware and software configurations to newer versions such as Direct X changes and CPU / GPU design. Different aspects of video editing are carried out by different parts of the system but also sometimes shared and the whole process is getting more complex each year. That in turn is sometimes needed to keep up with the changing technologies used in newer cameras etc.

Hi John.

The driver you point to is the game ready driver which on my system caused problems with my 1650 Super on my system with MEP 2022 and VPX 14 so I'm currently using the Studio driver which is still one version behind and version 537.58.

Of course that may not be a problem on Stephens system but I thought I might mention it in case there are problems.

I wondered if there were more up to date drivers for the Intel HD 750 but couldn't find the info. Thanks for that.

Ray, Stephen has a significantly better system than even the minimum "requirements". The system is not the issue. A fundamental software glitch is the most probable cause eg drivers or possibly BIOS setup. If MMS 18 could do it but MMS2023 can't, it's not the physical hardware.

As for implying that one needs to change computers every time software changes, that's just misleading.

Without the use of two monitors you need to get yourself a headless ghost which tricks the GPU it's plugged in to into thinking it is powering a monitor.

I do not have to do that with my single-monitor system. Both GPUs run fine regardless of the monitor hookup.

@Stephen-Fearnley

Stephen, just for the exercise, try changing the three Hardware Accel options (Device Options tab)to the UHD 750 and see how Magix performs then.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@AAProds

Hi Al.

If you look at the Task Manager Image Stephen supplied you can see that the system is not seeing the Intel GPU, which it should, hence my suggestions. At this point we don't even know if the Intel GPU is showing up in the program. At this point I doubt it as it is not showing up in Task Manager but I could be wrong.

Nor at any point have I suggested any component upgrade is necessary or even desirable in this instance. I was merely pointing out that the improvements in the programs performances often relies on the ability of newer hardware more than the programming itself which without the associated hardware seldom makes a difference performance wise and does often have the effect of not being as effective on a given system than an older version of the program. The reason I have kept my copy of MEP 2022 is that I can run more tracks simultaneously, more smoothly than I can with VPX 14. Creating proxy files within VPX 14 has no benefit on my system at all and not even needed running MEP 2022. I have no current desire to update either program until I have a new system to put them on to.

Hi

. . . . try changing the three Hardware Accel options (Device Options tab)to the UHD 750 . . . .

I agree with @AAProds suggestion once you have the UHD 750 available.

Depending on what effects etc you are applying you may need to determine which combination of the Import, Processing and Export options is best for any given project.

The project I am currently working which requires colour adjustments to the 4K 50 fps video - HEVC encoded, 10 bit, D-Cine colour profile - is pushing my system to its limits and works best when the 3 device options, that Al mentioned, are set to Intel iGPU, rather than my RTX 2060.

This sound counter intuitive however some effects, eg Colour adjustments, Brightness/Contrast, Blur and Titles, in my case, are processed using the Intel GPU than the RTX.

Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions.
I am having difficulty processing all the input, partly as I have had to do other things. !!
I cannot find any link to the UHD 750.
I tried to load down the driver suggested by John:
"your processer is 11th generation - see here for the download"
but it failed to find anyting with the message:

Something went wrong.
No driver was found that can be installed on the current device. Installer exit code: 8.

That also means I cannot find: the "three Hardware Accel options" mentioned.
There are things I have to do now so may not follow up until toimorrow - Thanks again

Your MSI motherboard specs, manuals etc can be found here.

Novatech should have supplied the relevant paper manuals etc.

Did Novatech supply your computer with the nvidia 1650 or did you add it yourself?

I ask because if you added the card then the Intel internal GPU should have been enabled when you got it unless it had another graphics card other than the 1650 in it.
