Movie Studio 18 Suite - Green Flicker in video playback and render

websnail wrote on 7/22/2021, 1:47 PM

Recently upgraded to Movie Studio 18 while retaining the version 17 for comparison and discovered a problem with the playback.

I'm getting garish bright green flickers on the playback that are not present in the source MP4 when watched and the same effect is rendered to the finished video.

Tested on version 17 and the problem doesn't occur.
Also tested a Sony *.MTS source video in ver 18, and that didn't display the issue.

Worth noting that this is on an AMD R9 270X series hardware with the latest drivers installed so I need to test this against a different system with a newer graphics card to see if it's similarly affected there.

File type is MP4, captured on Snaggit.
Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
Windows 10 64 bit machine
Movie Studio version is 18.1.0.24

Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

The reason no-one has answered you yet may be down to no-one else using Snagit.

I took a quick look around the website and confess it looks an interesting program.

Unfortunately there is no information there I can find telling me anything about it's settings for recording an MP4 file. As the information within such a file can vary greatly from one recording source to another it is difficult to give you a satisfactory answer.

What may help us solve the problem is if you download MediaInfo and use the tool to read the data from the file using the Text view from the program and copy and paste the result back to this topic thread.

As you may be aware, MS18 is really a re-badge of Movie Edit Pro 2021 with a few additional features promised to make it compatible with older MS projects for importing. As such the hardware requirements for processing may be different to your earlier version, or certain versions of codecs may not be as compatible as they once were.

It would also be useful if you were to add the complete spec of your computer and windows version and build along with any relevant drivers.

It could be you have the 'Use hardware acceleration' for both playback and exporting ticked within the program settings with no compatible hardware. If that is so, try to un-tick the appropriate boxes and see if things improve.

Also check the program settings for playback and see what you have in the boxes.

This shot is from Movie Edit Pro but MS18 should look similar unless you are talking about another version of a Vegas program.

Ray.

Thanks Ray... The hardware acceleration was the issue. Once unticked the flickering disappeared.

@websnail

Glad that sorted it for you but you may find due to the specification requirements of Movie Studio 18 being somewhat different to your older copy of Movie Studio 17, that the exports may now take longer than they once did. Upgrades normally reflect the current state of new hardware and are not always the best solution for older systems.

I hope this is not too much the case and you get some pleasure out of the new feature sets.
